What Should Be In A Hedgehog

Should I get a hedgehog?

Yesterday I went to the petstore and I saw a hedgehog! I've been wanting one for so long, I have books about them and such. I would be able to afford it and everything it needs. But at the pet store I also saw a baby hairless rat and her mother. The baby was old enough to be weaned and eating regular food, but she still stayed as close as she could to her mom. I don't want them to be separated, so I'm trying to decide... would the baby be heartbroken if she was taken away from her mother? I don't know if I should get them as a pair or the hedgehog, help me decide! One more question: can you take a hedgehog outside to play?

P.S. I have had a hairless rat in the past so I know about them too.

Should I get a hedgehog??

Aleasha, African Hedgehogs aren't actually pygmies. That's a pretty common misnomer. They are sometimes called pygmies because they are so much smaller than most of the European species, but they aren't pygmies. :)

1. It can hurt if you get poked, but it usually doesn't make you bleed or anything. Once your hedgie gets to know you, it usually wont try to poke you any more. You could get a pair of leather gloves to practice holding it while it gets to know you.

2. The only kind of hedgehog commonly available in US is the African Hedgehog. There are actually about 5 species of African hedgehogs that have been interbred so that it's hard to tell them apart now. They are all about the same anyways. Here is a site with all the different colours so you can pick one:

3. Name it whatever you want! Mine are named Eddie, Chaos, Amy, and Harriette.

4. You should always try to find a private breeder in your area to buy a pet from. You should NEVER buy from a pet store, even if that means you can't get the pet. You could also try finding one in a shelter or rescue. If you let us know what area you live in, we can help find some hedgies for you.

Should I get a hedgehog?

Sometime later this year, I might get a an african pygmy hedgehog. I've done a little bit of research so far, and I am responsible and I have experience in taking care of small animals. I have space for it and would spend time with it when it wanted to come out and play and I would give it the proper care (food, housing etc.) And I know that hedgehogs aren't exactly "cuddly" pets that you can hold whenever and they'll fall asleep on your lap. I can also pay for at least 3/4 of everything at this moment, (when I said later this year I meant for my birthday or Christmas, so my parents would probably help me out some) Also if there are any tips about caring for an African Pygmy Hedgehog that would be great!
:)

I'm adopting a baby, 3 week old, African Pygmy Hedgehog and I need a name for it (other then sonic, been there done that). For this one I would like something that references a really interesting character, book, show, movie, or really just an awesome name.
EDIT: I would also accept the name of real people. Badass ones anyway

Should i get a ferret or hedgehog?

ferrets are more fun but have to be kept in pairs. but they are like 100 times more expensive! i spent $500 to get my ferrets all set up not including the ferrets themselves! so if you cant afford to have about $1,500 laying around all the time for supplies and in case of emergency a hedgehog is the way to go! many people think ferrets are cheap and easy to care for, BOY ARE THEY WRONG! they have to be vaccinated, spayed, and i spend about $1000 on my 3 every year, not including the $600 i spend when Titan got a severe respritory infection caused by neglect of his previous owners, they thought ferrets were cheap so he never got vet care, was feed cheap walmart brand cat food, and his tiny cage had CEDAR bedding in it (big no no!) so if you cant afford like $2100 a year +, hedgehogs are cool!
