What Should I Do To Be A Good Writer

How did you become a good writer?

Same way you get to Carnegie Hall.Three steps to repeat: read, write and edit.Certainly being fluent in the language you have chosen to write in is key, and that starts with reading a lot of good writing so you can recognize it if you see it in your own work. If you read Mencken and Thurber and C.S. Lewis and Asimov and Nabokov (careful about translations, and careful about assumptions - Nabokov wrote Lolita in English), you will absorb vocabulary and pick up a style that is right for you. There's nothing magic in my short list; I only mean that the more truly great writing you read, the better models you'll have. Then write. Write and write and write. I know that writing has made me a better writer in the past four years. I've written close to 1000 answers, and probably more comments than that. I just find it much easier to write now than I did a short time ago. Sadly, I can no longer stop writing, even within a given answer, and have said many times that I can pack 100 words worth of ideas into a concise 1500 word entry. But it's embarrassing for me to be asked this question, not because I think I'm a bad writer, but because I haven't consistently (or even often) carried out step three: edit. Rewrite. Take words out unless they are necessary. Use simple phrases where possible. Don't use the same word over and over again unintentionally. I think I write good first drafts on Quora. They made me a Top Writer. I think I'm a 90th percentile writer (though that's obviously true as long as I get to pick the group I'm being compared to, whether that's "all humans", or "all Quorans", or all the people arguing on the internet, etc. Quora has been kind enough to arrive five or six of my answers to be published on Forbes and Slate and Huff Post. I am given whatever time I have asked for to clean up the answer before it goes to one of those sites. And I make lots of changes. I think those answers got lifted into the 94th percentile. And that's good enough. (Note also that if you have a friend who can help, or Simon and Shuster will pay someone to help, having an editor is invaluable, because they have fresh eyes. You can usually reject their edits if you like.) I wish I could write like some other Top Writers, or even like Umberto Eco, et al. But I wish I could play the piano like Elton John. I just didn't practice enough to come close, and there is an outer limit based on natural ability, of course.

How can i become a good writer?

In your case an automatic writing might suit you well. Just treat a writing session as you would meditation and prepare similarly. Relax and either write with your eyes almost closed, or dictate to a voice activated recorder any thing that comes to your mind, start at any time you feel like it and stop as soon as you feel like it. Trust your feelings and your intuition. If you like some piece, edit it and share it with a friend, join creative writing group and share it there; anything it is better than a desire to write, a talent, and no action. Good luck.

What does it mean to be a good writer?

Grammar and Spelling (I won't bother with writers who can't take the time to use proper grammar and spelling. To those writers, you are a story-teller and should show some respect for the craft.)

Choice of Words (This may only be me, but there are just some phrases that I will stop reading a story over.)

Originality (Nobody wants to read a cliche story, no matter how good your prose is.)

Honestly am i a good writer?

A few things:

- The spelling and grammar really is a huge issue - it's truly appalling here, and I find it a little difficult to believe that someone whose spelling, punctuation and grammar is usually good would type this badly, even if they were doing it quickly. Presumably if this is something you wrote recently, you'd have pasted it in anyway. Whatever - only you know how bad or good your grammar is usually, so you know whether it's something you need to sort out. Based on this, I'd say it definitely is.

- You switch tenses in both of them at least once. Decide whether the events of your story *were* happening or whether they *are* happening, and keep it that way.

- I understand that you're probably trying to make the mother in the second passage come across as fake, but the repetition of the word "baby" made me cringe a little - at the writing, not at the character.

- "He tortured me for minutes on end" - what precisely is happening there? From just the extract you've given, I have absolutely no idea what this "torture" entails. Obviously, it's something incredibly unpleasant, but while you certainly don't have to go into graphic description, I feel that if you've specifically mentioned it like that, your reader really has to have some idea beyond this of what is happening. Think about whether you're comfortable with writing what is actually happening and can make it come across as real to the people reading. If you're not or you can't, take it out. Ending a paragraph with the narrator trying to fight off the man and starting a new one with him walking away would be far more effective than something which leaves the reader feeling more confused than sympathetic. In my opinion, this does.

- I wouldn't read any further based on either of these, but I do think you have potential. Keep practising. If there's anyone you can show your work to who could give you some constructive criticism, do that. If you're allowed, there are sites you can post your writing to, and get feedback from.

Research about that topic.Pen it down. No problem even if you can’t make whole thing at once.Save draft. When you have full idea of what you are going to write, start writing.Once you are done with your answer, check whether it’s well organised. If not, restructure your answer till you feel and it looks good and interesting.Look for typos and grammar mistakes. Do the refinements and submit again.( You can see my answers are 117 and posts are just 10. But my edits are 2035. i.e., On an average, i edit an answer 16 - 20 times even after submitting. Is my writing any good or do I suck?

So basically, I am interested in writing, mainly something like Science-fiction. But I feel like I am not such a good writer. I've received plenty of compliments, for an example: "Oh, you write so well! You're probably the best writer I know!" which my best friend said a while ago. While my teacher said that I have great potential and that I should allow my talent to unfurl. Yet, I don't feel like a good writer. I have many, many ideas, but I never have the energy to finish them, I suppose my attention span is that short.

I'll show you an example of my writing:

"She gritted her pearly white teeth as she ran the cold blade across her pale wrist. A hiss of pain was quickly replaced with a satisfied sigh as the endorphin kicked in. She watched as beads of blood slowly seeped from the wound she acquired only a moment ago and finally transforming into a trail of the dark crimson liquid she saw pouring from her wounds every day.

“Sally?” A heavy knock on the bathroom door brought her back to reality. The blonde called Sally stared momentarily at the door and then looked at the tiled floor as she heard drops of her own blood explode when they hit the ground. “Sally, can you hear me?” Her brother's thin voice sounded worried, he once walked in on her cutting herself and forced her to see a psychologist. It worked, for a short period of time, but Sally couldn't handle leaving her addiction so she kept carving her arm, of course keeping it a secret from her brother Bruce.

“Yeah,” She paused for a moment. “Just a sec', coming out.” Quickly, she wrapped a bandage around her wrist, halting the blood flow for a bit. She washed the knife and hid it in its usual place, underneath the sink. She knew it was only a matter of time before Bruce would discover it there, but she would have to chew that food later.

She came face to face with her tall older brother as she opened the worn door. He was tall enough for Sally to have to stand on her tip toes to give him a peck on the cheek. “Phew,” He breathed, “You had me kind of worrying there for a second.” He chuckled and bent slightly to wrap his strong arms around his smaller little sister."

How does that sound? I know it's pretty far-fetched to seek answers from strangers on the internet, but it's really the only option. I am ready to accept critiques.

In your opinion, what makes a good writer?

Someone who can weave a delightfully interesting and entertaining story that suspends my belief in reality and takes me on a journey through their storytelling.
A decent novel will paint pictures for me with just some well placed words, I will see the sights, feel the grass, hear the smallest sound and enjoy the scents wafting in the air. Everything they write makes me associate it with something I can immediately grasp while I am whisked away by new thoughts and ideas.

A good writer is engaging with each and every page. They make something new or make something old shine brilliantly under their hand. They breath a freshness into cliches and static characters and re-used plots to make vibrant characters come right off the page and live with you.

A good writer should write well, be creative, and unique, as well as tell a beautiful story..
