How do I heal a shoulder injury?

I grew up playing waterpolo and swimming very competitively. It wasn't until about 3 years ago that I began having a lot of shoulder pain. My coach continued to push me when I should have been resting it. One year later it got to the point where I couldn't play anymore and I quit. I haven't played any serious sports for 2 years. My shoulder is still in a lot of pain whenever its actively being used.

For example, I wanted to swim some laps for the other day for the first time in 2 YEARS and it hurt every stroke. I have been doing yoga thinking maybe it needs to be stretched more but yoga doesn't seem to be helping and a lot of the yoga poses hurt my shoulder.

I am overseas for the next few months so I am not looking to see a doctor until I get back. I just want to know if theres anything I can do besides resting it and yoga? Do you think I might need surgery? I am only 18 :(

How do i heal a shoulder pain that doesn't go away?

Well, first of all, it depends on what is causing the pain. Did you injure yourself exercising, playing, lifting or is it a pain that just developed? Did it develope suddenly or slowly? There can be multiple reasons for shoulder pain including: pulled muscle, torn rotator cuff, bone spur, arthritis, bursitis, etc. You need to get to the root of the pain before you know how to treat it. Some of these maladys are cured by heat, cold, anti-infamatory drugs, physical therapy or surgery. Consult your Doc and go from there. Hope you feel better.

How long does it take for a tattoo on your shoulder blade to heal?

I have three tattoos. All relatively large [six inches to a foot long each.] My first one was on my shoulder blade. Out of the three, that one hurt the least. It was more of an annoying scratch than pain. Some areas may sting a little, but it's definitely the most bearable area.

Healing is different depending on the person. My friend's tattoo in the same area took a month to fully heal. Mine took two and a half weeks. How you'll know is if you ran your fingers/hand across it and closed your eyes, you wouldn't be able to tell that there was a tattoo there. It should feel just like the rest of your skin. Not even slightly different/rougher when it's fully done healing.

All you have to do is make sure to follow your artist's directions. Each artist has different aftercare. I'll tell you mine to give you an idea. I used A&D ointment until my tattoo started to peel. Then I switch to unscented lotion, like Lubriderm. If it stings when you put it on, you're not yet ready for lotion. Stick to the A&D. You don't want to apply too much of either--just thin layers so you don't suffocate it. Just enough to moisturize but not over-moisturize it, which can draw out the ink and hinder the healing process. Just keep doing that until it's done healing. In terms of showering, don't let the shower head spray directly on your tattoo for at least the first week. Your skin's already experienced trauma from the needles, so don't want to add to it and make it more sore. Also, don't keep it wet for too long [my artist said ten minutes tops] as that can draw out the ink. Pat it dry with a towel. You won't want to sleep on it either. I'd lie on your side. My friend laid on her stomach to sleep. Whichever is most comfortable. If it does end up sticking to your shirt or something, just go to the bathroom and wet it. It should come off easily once the cloth is soaked. Don't just rip it off or it'll take the ink with it.

That's really all you need to know :D

If you have shoulder subluxations, how long does that take to heal?

Its minimum of 6 wks in order to strengthen your muscles to help prevent future subluxations. It is very important to note that you MUST continue with the strengthening exercises indefinitely to help prevent future injury. The strength you gain in PT will not stay if you stop doing the exercises. Also there is a chance that PT may not be the solution and you may need surgery if your shoulder is too loose.
