What Should I Do When Half Of My Nail Is Hanging Off

My dog ripped his toe nail it is hanging halfway off, not bleeding but he is in alot of pain?

It depends on how far back he broke his nail. In most cases, if it's just the tip and if it's not bleeding, you can simply take his nail clippers and clip the broken end off. If it bleeds, apply styptic powder or corn starch. If it's cracked lengthwise, if it's ripped pretty far back, or in this case, because he seems to be in pain, you might want a vet to take a look at it, just to be on the safe side.

Edit: Because it's down to the skin, if you have not yet done anything, it would be a good idea to take him to a vet. It's not an emergency, so don't worry about rushing somewhere tonight. Keep him calm overnight -- if you crate him, it might be a good idea to "put him to bed" early, if he just won't keep calm. You can gently wrap it, but only if he'll leave the wrap alone. Don't give him any OTC human pain medications if you have never received a dose from a veterinarian. He'll be okay, even if he acts like it's the end of the world. :)

My dog's nail broke in half but is still hanging there?

It's her thumb nail, it broke in half kinda but it's still attached. She keeps licking it so I'm guessing she's in pain. It's bleeding a little, I think it might have hit the quick. We've been trying to file her nails with one of those nail clippers that are suppose to be safer but she's a big dog with a lot of muscle so it's pretty difficult. Anyways, I don't know what to do?! We can't go to the vet cause the roads are icy AND what if it did hit the quick!? How are we suppose to get the nail off without making her bleed even more?!

Oh and when I say we've been trying to file her nails, I mean a few days ago, not while it's just dangling there, that would probably hurt.

Toenail barely hanging on...? what should I do?

As the new toenail grows in, it pushes the old toenail off. If it is intact on one side try to leave it until it will pull off very easily, with no pain and without bleeding. You should cut a band aid in half and put it over the nail to keep from snagging it on something and ripping it off. The only reason the new toe nail would grow in abnormally would be if you damaged the nail bed matrix(the area where the nail grows out from) when you originally injured the toe. It can sometimes take up to a year to grow completely back in...but on average usually 6 months or so.

Good Luck

My fingernail is half way off, should I remove it?

My fingernail is hanging on by just the nail bed, I can lift it almost completely up. I do not want my fingernail to grow all ski-womp-us but I am afraid I am going to end up snagging it on something like my shirt and ripping it off. (OUCH!) Will it affect the growth if I remove it and just start over?

How do I take my toe nail off that's falling off but still attached from the right side?

Thanks for the A2A! It’s not too difficult to remove a toe nail that’s already partially lost. What you really need is courage! I have had to do this a few times over the years. If the nail is just hanging on by a thread (so to speak) just pull it off! The faster the better. I have even done it with my eyes closed! It’s kind of like ripping off a bandaid, the anxiety is worse than the act. After you have successfully removed what’s left, make sure to cover the exposed area with neosporin and some clean cotton (for padding) then wrap it with a large bandaid. You should change the dressing daily, and you can soak your foot in warm water if it is sore, which it probably will be. It will be tender for a while until the nail completely grows back. Big toes take much longer to grow back than the 4 smaller toes. Good luck

Half of my toe nail was dead so I cut it off and it painlessly came off, but the other half is still attached and really hurts if I try to cut it because it's not dead. When a new toe nail grows in will that one come off?

When you say half, do you mean halfway between the cuticle and free edge (the bit that you normally clip off)?I’m going to assume that's what you mean and answer accordingly. If the nail came off easily when you cut it, it means there was some kind of trauma which meant your nail bed (the soft fleshy part under your nails) was damaged and as a result, the nail separated from it. The part that hurts is still attached to nail bed, don't cut it any further. What will happen is your new nail will grow out from the cuticle area and push the nail that's already there, to become the free edge which you then cut.If the nail bed is still damaged when the new nail grows to that half where you cut off before, the same thing will happen, the nail won't attach to the nailbed (This will more than likely be the case with any new growth in the next 3–6 months)My suggestion right now is to look after the nail bed that's currently exposed. Keep it dry, if it's extra dry you can add a little olive oil, but when you take a bath or shower take care to dry it properly. Also wear loose fitting shoes and socks. It will heal itself but it will take time. Try not to cause anymore trauma to it.An ingrown toenail is very possible, but you will know you have one if you did, you'll be in extreme pain at one or both sides of the nail. Don't worry about that too much now if you don't have it, look after the nail bed.If there’s more to the story give some more information and I will try to help further.

I cut my fingernail in half, what shoud I do?

Wrap it in a clean bandage with some Neosporin. It is going to hurt like no other for a while, and the nail may turn black and fall off, but it will be fine. Just make sure it doesn't get infected and your body will do the rest. Also if its just a tiny piece holding it on I would trim the part of the nail that is hanging off.
That is only if you meant the nail- if you are talking about you cut your finger in half put it on ice and go to the hospital!

I have a half torn off nail. Do I leave the part that detached from the nail bed but still connected to the other half of the nail there’s, or should I clip it off?

It depends on how much of the nail bed has been damaged, if the nerves were torn out and it hurts the nerves underneath it’s usually better to remove it. If you can keep it in place to protect it from infection then do this instead. Either way it needs cleaned a lot.You can use things like coconut oil dips 20 or so times a day, the white blood cells will use it as a sort of floating bridge to more quickly knit the nerves if it’s still possible to heal it joined, or otherwise it will biold a sort of calluses over the top so that the nail can be removed. Adding things like lavendar which is good for skin cell regeneration is also good. You can use salt if you can hack the pain to clean it, otherwise get a non reactive antibacterial for it.It’s a good idea to wrap a bandage so it doesn’t catch on things, just make sure it an still breathe.I have chopped through my nail a few times and this has served me well enough. I don’t even have a scar now where I cut half of my thumb nail through in a wierd sort of curve. Though it did take a couple of years before the nail started growing back at it’s normal pace.

I broke my nail in half, HELPPPP !?

So I was messing around and I hit my friends arm, and well my nail broke. It hurts so bad it split like across, there's still a small piece attached I wasn't bleeding much but I'm in terrible pain. I've been numbing it to cut the top piece off since my nails are really long. What should I do though, like separate it completely? Or leave it on and just... I don't know. H E L P M E P L E A S E.
