What Should I Know About Homeschooling

Should homeschooling be legal?

About 3% of Americans are home schooled. I don't think it should be legal for a few reasons. Every homeschooled person I have ever met either has some complex that they are a wonder child and think they are much better than they truly are. They also tend to be incredibly socially awkward. These are both because they do not develop the social skills that others do in a public or private school. Second, parents who school their own kids tend to focus on one area and neglect all of the others. This makes sense if you think about it, A parent can only teach their kid what they specialize in/ what is easy, so the more difficult things that they haven't learned about are neglected. This gets worse as time goes on because at the elementary level, a high school or even, jr high school grad, has the technical knowledge to teach the subjects. Once you get into jr high, these subjects need to be more specialized, and a few people simply can't do it. This is why I have noticed that many home schooled kids are in and win spelling bees. The parents just teach their kid that so they can say their kid is a champion. Third, the grading isn't credible. Most homeschooled people I know have "skipped" a grade before. Parents think their children are incredibly smart so they skip one, and then they don't understand basic knowledge of a subject. This must be Hell for colleges because parents don't have to give any sensical (yes I just made that word) grading system. This could also be biased towards the homeschooled system because parents know their kids "real" ability, even if they are less proficient in a subject, they can still get an A. So I feel that there is something fundamentally wrong with the idea of homeschooling.

What are some things to know before homeschooling your children?

It's HARD!!! VERY hard! My wife and I, disgruntled with the school districts lack of caring, decided to home school our kids…The decision that led to it was that my son’s kindergarten teacher should NOT have been in that profession. She still works there and we ONLY ever see her with her bitch face. I've seen her in public, complete bitch face. She’s young! I don't understand how she could be so freaking angry, miserable, and just generally unhappy. She’s snide, condescending, and treats the kids as if they’re just the worst invention ever and how DARE they exist!!!We complained to the school, got zero response. Complained to the district, same result. So, that's why we home schooled him.My daughter had some problems too with being bullied. The school, school district, and teachers did absolutely zilch about it. When my daughter finally defended herself, the school labeled her as a bully and punished her, so we chose to home school her as well.My kids then refused to do their work. They used every moment of every day as a great opportunity to let us know exactly how stupid we were for trying to get them to learn something. Not a day went by without them pitching the biggest shit fit the world has ever seen.To tell the truth… that school year, we got to where we actually hated them. Now… I know, that's a strong word and no, we NEVER said that around the kids… but I am telling you… they were DEMONS! Pure evil! That year, in spite of our best efforts, we even hired people to come help us, we failed miserably. If you’re going to home school… BE SURE you’re ready for it! Have a plan! Mentally prepare for a hell of a challenge.Good Luck!

Where do I start to learn about homeschooling?

Well Google is the starting point for all curiosity. But a next step would be to find some homeschooling family who has a similar situation to yours. For example, if you are homeschooling a special needs child, look for one who has done that with success. If ambitious travel is your objective, follow “worldschooling” families. If you are looking for acceleration, find someone who has done that impressively. And then go model their approach. Understand that within the homeschooling world, there are vastly different approaches - many of which are even contradictory.

Do you know any failure case of homeschooling all around the world?

There are many cases of failure when it comes to education. There are documented cases where families have not educated their children properly and some of them are in families that claim to homeschool. The stories are from many parts of the world where homeschooling is prevalent. There are also cases where children were neglected, ill-educated through other means of educational institutions. Neglectful parents are always the cause of this, not the means by which they are educated.

What should a homeschooled student know before entering 8th grade?

There are some good answers at I have been homeschooled all my life but expect to be starting public high school next year. What can I expect?Simplest is: Do what teachers ask. If you don't understand, ask.You will pick up a lot just by watching other students. The problem is that at this point, many students have decided school isn’t serving their needs. Their goal has shifted from learning to doing as little as they can get away with so they can get through the classes. Which is a natural response to being forced to do work that they don’t find relevant.Make friends with those who still have a positive attitude. Watch them. Let them show you the ropes.

What do I need to know as a homeschooled student attending college in the fall (I’ll be living on campus in the dorms)?

Mainly that your paying for the homework. In college/uni, the teachers usually don’t have teaching degrees and are either; adjuncts who are college graduates, PhD students who aren’t much other than you, or professors. Each has it’s unique perks and… frustrations.Adjunct teachers are usually more lax in their grading, but are usually too busy to make their own slideshow so they lecture ver batum from pre-made slides. It’s stone dead dull. PhD students are pretty much adjuncts but they teach slightly higher level classes, just hope that they used to tutor. Then professors exist which can range from dorks just wanting grant money for their research projects to teachers that care about their class so much that they trial by fire and knock off a good chunk of the class. The key here is that you can’t depend on teachers to understand the topic. You will probably learn more from the homework and textbook. And that assumes your willing to pay for the textbooks which can be heinously expensive. There’s also a lot of re-sell protection like homework program codes and stuff, so yeah.Oh. Also expect large class average scores to be awful. It’s perfectly normal for 100+ people exams having an average score of 50

Get my therapist to reccomend homeschooling?

Hi everyone!
Well I have severe anxiety and today had an appointment to get a therapist. In the next week or so we should be getting a call from the girl. My mom said she would let me homeschool if my therapist says its ok...because my mom doesn't know how bad my anxiety is and doesn't want to decide on her own. Does anyone have tips on how to let my new therapist know that homeschooling is very important to me and I really think that's what I should do?

Thanks!

How is homeschooling supervised in the USA? How does the government know if parents actually teach their kids or are just having them at home?

I can only speak for me and the state I live in. In Texas, the government doesn’t know if I actually taught my kids. It was none of their business. My kids belonged to me, and it was my responsibility to teach them. I’d be willing to bet that I loved my kids more than any teacher did, so why wouldn’t I do my best to teach them? One of my sons was a chatty kid and disrupted the class regularly. He wasn’t disrespectful or violent. He just couldn’t shut up. The principal finally decided to send this 11 year old to the Student Alternative Center (SAC). School policy dictated that the process included a trip to the county’s juvenile detention center where the child would be scolded / warned about their behavior by a juvenile probation officer. Because a parent was required to attend the meeting, the parent was often scolded as well. Before I let that happen, I withdrew him from the school and purchased a homeschool curriculum I agreed with. The school contacted me a few days later asking me to provide them with the reasons for withdrawing him. I told them, and that was that.I’ve heard horror stories about families who tried to teach their children at home in other countries and have been prosecuted. I’m certainly glad I live where I do.This is a side note - A child with no absences is not necessarily a good thing. Many kids go to school when they’re sick in order to win that prize or recognition. The school encourages perfect attendance. It loses money for each kid each day they’re not there. At the time and in Texas about 10 years ago that was about $47 a day. Multiply that by any number of kids who get sick on any number of days.
