What degrees should I major in to become a lawyer?

It doesn't really matter what you major in. Popular choices are history, political science, business (wide variety here), engineering, english. The important part is to pick a major that is useful to you. Majoring in basket-weaving won't impress any admission committee. God forbid you get a Bachelors and then decide you don't want to be a lawyer.

Also, if you pick a major you are interested in, then your grades will generally be higher. As for the suggestion of Criminal Justice, it would demonstrate an interest in being a criminal lawyer but nothing else. Very few law students actually pursue criminal law as career.

If I want to become a UI/UX designer, what major(s) would you recommend for college and what colleges offer these majors?

(I totally second listening to Let's Make Mistakes, and not just because it's made by Mules :-)I went to a small liberal arts school right before the internet became a thing and majored in Philosophy, which ended up being incredibly useful. I had to work with categories and think very hard about why things are as they are and how they should be.As Jason said, it doesn't really matter what you major in if you want to be an interface designer. Multidisciplinary critical thinking is the essential background. The vocational skills get picked up through observation and practice. The technology is constantly changing. Take at least one computer science class for fundamentals of the system. Cognitive science for the fundamentals of the humans you are creating the interface to help. Learn how to write and build a cogent argument and take some classes that expose you to criticism from your peers. If you want to be a really good designer, you need to run towards the sharpest criticism with open arms, and this is what people who don't go to art or design school miss. Then they are either oversensitive and sad or annoyingly arrogant for the first few years of their career. So, get your education on some core principles that are less likely to change. Learn about stuff you really love. And grow a thick skin. Solving design problems is a team effort. Think about what you want to bring to that. It's more fun and more effective to have an art major, and a physicist, and a sociology major around the table.

What should I major in if I want to become a inventor/entrepreneur?

Web development and programming can be learned online for free or almost for free. I personally have never seen the benefit of going to college/university soley to learn web development. I even looked it up once, the computer science major does include web development but it is not thorough. I personally recommend learning business administration because in programming, for example, all you need to do is pretty much know how to code while in running a business you need to learn tons and tons of different things including but not limited to laws, finance, strategies, human resources, marketing, and so on.In a business major, you get to also learn how to network, how to create a resume, how to sell, stocks (At selective locations). There are websites online such as W3Schools where you can learn absolutely everything about web development and there are doezens of open source projects such as MyBB where you can easily practice with help from other experienced developers. All you need is dedication. You can easily lose the motivation when self-studying but as long as you can continue to learn by yourself, you are good to go. You can create a brilliant product but if you don't know how to sell it, your product is worth nothing. Another thing, if you major in computer science or become a web master then you would have to code or program for someone else to raise the capital to support your project. Think about how it would work out : You wake up in the morning, go to work where you code and when you come back home you again code by this time for yourself. While on the other hand, if you learn business administration or management you can become a manager which means good pay, you can overlook the work of other developers and see how they get stuff done and learn from them. You can later go back home and code, since there's a change you won't feel exhausted.P.S: Most of programming and web development gigs are moving out of U.S.A to countries like India, and Columbia. Why? The same reason why manufacturing has moved to China.

If you want to be a writer, what career should you study at university?

Unless you want to be a journalist or work in some other writing job that requires some sort of writing  or communications degree, you probably should major in something that has nothing to do with writing. Many of the most successful modern authors studied and worked in areas completely unrelated to writing. This can be good for a couple of reasons:You'll have specialized knowledgeTake Michael Crichton for an example. He graduated from Harvard Medical School, but didn't go into his residency because he was already a successful writer. This background in science helped him to research and write so many of his successful novels like Jurassic Park, A Case of Need and The Andromeda Strain. If he had majored in communications or journalism, who knows if he would have ever written such compelling science fiction.Another good example is John Grisham. He was a lawyer before becoming a novelist and used that background to basically invent a new genre of fiction, the legal thriller. You won't become a writing snobIn my experience, a lot of people who go through writing programs become snobbish about the written word. Instead of focusing on writing fascinating stories, they worry about syntax and grammar and a lot of under-the-hood nonsense that doesn't matter to potential readers. Coming from the outside, you'll be less white-knuckled about such things and feel more able to just write something interesting. You can always work with an editor to catch the occasional wayward comma or correct an awkward sentence.Basically, successful writers come from all college majors. So choose something that fascinates you, then continue to study and practice writing on the side.
