What Should My Parents Do Regarding Not Receiving Their Tax Refund Yet

Does my Financial Aid Refund belong to me or my parents?

I agree with the answer from Arianna.

If you can arrange to have your financial aid refund money deposited directly into your bank savings or checking account do that. You will need to speak with someone in your school's Financial Aid Office about how to set that up.

If you cannot arrange a direct deposit of your financial aid refund money, then arrange for you to pick up the check for the refund money (don't have it sent to you by US mail.) When you pick up the refund check at school (probably at the school Bursar's/Business/Cashier's Office, take it directly to your bank or your bank's nearby ATM, complete a deposit slip and deposit the money into your bank savings or checking account.

Student aid funds are not taxable (income tax.) If you deposit the refund money in a bank savings account any interest added to the money may need to be reported on your income tax return. However, the added interest will probably be only a tiny amount and won't make much difference to your reported income tax income.

If you can arrange for direct deposit of your refund money into your bank account, and if your father asks where your refund check is this time, just say the school requires direct deposit now for security reasons. It may tick him off, but he has acted like a thief - and to his own daughter!

I hope he is not named on your bank account as a co-owner. If so, get him taken off of that, right away. Tell the banker you speak with that your father has proven himself to be untrustworthy with your money and tell the banker what he did with your refund check. The banker may wish to look into the situation in the event that your father forged your name on the check endorsement.

Best wishes

Parent steals my w2's and files my return to collect my refund. Help?

I'm 18. My mom has been stealing my w2's to file and take my refund check since I began working at 16. Now that I'm an adult I won't let her anymore. I took my w2 out of the mail and she went psycho on me, saying that if I do my own return she won't be able to claim me as a dependent (even though I told her I would file as a dependent for return only). I think she is only telling me this so that I'll give her my w2. Isn't it true though? Can't she still claim me if I put on my return that I'll be claimed by someone else?

Do my parents get my tax return money?

"Any tips on how I can get the tax return and not my parents "

Relax, your parents can NOT get your refund UNLESS you give it to them after YOU receive it. It's your tax return & your refund. You are a dependent; but you are NOT a minor. So stop worrying about that.

If you want a refund or you are required to file because you meet minimum filing requirements - you have to file your own federal & state income tax form. Your parents can NOT claim your income or your refund on their tax return & they can't have your refund deposited into their bank account..

If your ONLY income is from working - you meet minimum filing requirements if your earn more than 6,200 for federal. Even if you don't, you can still file a return to claim a refund. If you made 6,200 or less & this is your ONLY income - all federal income tax will be refunded. Check your year to date for federal w/h on your last pay stub & see what has been w/h so far this year.

You've met minimum filing requirements for the state of CA since you are a dependent on your parents tax return. You are required to file a CA state tax return because your income is more than 3992..

When you receive your w-2 in January - you will use the info on the w-2 to fill out your tax returns for both federal & state. You can NOT claim your own exemption because you are a dependent. You can use irs.free file - make sure you choose free state return also. I would have suggested filling out a 1040 EZ because it is a very simple form to complete & much faster than using free tax software; but since you are required to file a state tax return, you will be better off using irs freefile. Once again, you can't claim your own personal exemption because you are a dependent on your parents tax return.

If you have a bank account - you can choose to have your refund deposited right into your bank account. You need to know your account number & your routing number. Otherwise they can mail your refund check to you.

You can always ask someone knowledgeable to help you if you have any issues. Just take your time & read each question carefully. Make sure you download a copy for your records & make sure you look your tax return over before you submit it electronically..

Good Luck

Can I sue the IRS for holding my refund?

Sure, you can. Like others have mentioned, you can sue anyone for anything. But tell me one thing -why do you think IRS is holding your refund? Is it so big that they need the money to run their organization (IRS)?If not, then what can be the reason? Find out the reason - the reason could be just a clerical mistake OR the reason could be 'you are not due a refund', your asking for refund does not mean they accepted your returns - may be they sent you a letter by mail that you did not receive.May be they think you owe them some other money somewhere else and they are holding back the refund to net against the money you owe them.May be it is simply too late to ask for refund - several years after it was due.Just call them and find out the reason... for recent years, you can check the status refund online itself Where's My Refund? - It's Quick, Easy and Secure.

Can my parents refile their taxes to claim me independent?

I haven't lived with my parents since high school and I'm currently a Junior in college. I need more money for school and they don't provide for me anymore in the least. I was wondering if there is ANYTHING I can do? They claimed me as dependent, which is in-fact false, is there anything I can do or do I have to convince them to refile their taxes claiming me independent?
In addition, will I be eligible for the 2008 tax return checks? How long will refiling taxes take so that I can get more FASFA loan money? (My girlfriends loans doubled from FASFA when they claimed her independent).
Also, my school doesn't allow me to get in-state tuition if I am claimed dependent and my parents don't live in the state that I go to school in, so this would make me eligible for in-state tuition.

As a dependent on my parents taxes and a student, is it better to file taxes with them or independently?

“As a dependent on my parents taxes and a student, is it better to file taxes with them or independently?”You have a mistaken impression. You file your own tax return. There is no provision by which there is a “family” tax return or “parent and dependents” tax return. You have liability for taxes on your income, you have a right to receive the refund of withholdings in excess of your tax liability.

If my parents claim me as dependant how does that affect my tax return?

First, IF your parents can legally claim you, YOU cannot claim yourself, even if they don't.
Probably you're right

But you file a tax return to receive hopefully a tax refund. . . .your return will be affected only by your checking a box that you can be claimed as a dependent; your refund will be affected because you cannot reduce your taxable income by taking your own exemption since your parents would take it

HOWEVER, your parents may not be able to claim you as a dependent given your posting
Are you a full time student supported by your parents?
Do you provide more than half your own support?
What's your age?
Edit: Ok 19, that means IF you were NOT a fulltime student for at least 5 months during the year, parents CANNOT claim you, as you're too old AND making too much money.
If you provide MORE than half your support, no matter your age, your parents cannot claim you.
Look it up and talk to your parents
