Some stick a reduced price sticker on them for quick sale. They are usually marked way down. A girl I know that was a butcher at on super market used to bring the meat home that was going to be tossed. She would cut off any green area. Not a good practice. I believe that mold and other bacteria probably ribbons through the meat. Some when it is nearing the expiration date will cook it and this extends the storage time and they will sell as prepared food. Prepared products from manufacturers is usually tossed if it doesn’t sell as a reduced sale price. Fruits and veggies are usually tossed, but I have heard of some selling to the local pig farmers for pig feed. Generally stores know just how much they should order by tracking sales and don’t over order. There are retail systems that do inventory control, and tracking when to reorder. Many cash registers do this feeding the information to a main computer. So you don’t see a lot of waste at these stores anymore. Most stores order from a central point as well where the tracking may be done. Managers have a good idea how much and what will sell and select from a list sent to them on some items.

Are US supermarkets better for food shopping than UK supermarkets?
I don’t know much about the supermarkets in Britain but here in the USA the markets vary from small to huge. A small shop would specialize either in serving a small community or a type of product. Normal supermarkets here have a wide variety of goods usually ranging from filet mignon to flashlight batteries. Almost all have a good variety of international foods usually leaning heavier on the population in that area. Fresh veggies are more abundant in California than in some areas of the country but that isn’t saying much. Most stores in the USA are well stocked with a good variety of fresh fruits and veggies. I shop in a local store that has 14, 20 meter long isles (considered smallish but not small here) and 1/4 are devoted to fresh produce, mostly organically grown and another 1/4 of the store is a hot serve deli and fresh meats. I can buy grass fed beef as well as standard processed meats. It has organic chicken and Foster Farms and they carry organic, free range, local grown turkey year round. I buy fresh salmon, rockfish or other fish that was swimming in local waters that morning and fresh or cooked shrimp sustainably caught within 24 hours. This store buys directly from the boats every day and sells it cheaper than the Safeway store here. I admit this is not the average store but for a village of 2,500 people in a remote area of California it is great.

Go to the electronic scale in the produce aisle and weigh it. Enter the code and press the print button. It prints a bar-coded label for your plastic bag that you put the produce into. 2) Put the fruit into a bag and take it to the checkout counter. The checkout counter has a scale on the scanner bed. The cashier weighs it, the cashier knows or has a table of those produce codes and enters it into the register and the register calculates the amount to be charged. .
