Which is better for getting fit: eating dinner before or after a workout?

You Asked: Should I Eat Before or After a Workout?Short answer: Both.Long answer: How and when to fuel your body is the same for all exercisers to some extent, but your routine may warrant a few nutritional tweaks, says Dr. Nancy Cohen, head of the department of nutrition at the University of Massachusetts.“In general, you’ll want to eat a meal high in carbs and protein and low in fat roughly three to four hours before you exercise,” Cohen says, whether you’re trying to shed pounds or build muscle. Carbohydrates supply your body with the glycogen it needs for your yoga session, gym visit, or jog. Skimp on carbs, and your muscles will sputter when called on to perform, she says.If you’re trying to lose weight, it may seem weird and counterproductive to eat a carb-heavy meal before you hit the gym. But complex carbohydrates like beans, lentils, whole grains and starchy vegetables will provide exercise fuel plus nutrients and fiber. Unlike refined carbohydrates—things like white bread, cookies, soft drinks, or many pre-packaged foods—complex carbs won’t expand your personal equator or supercharge your appetite, research shows.Cohen recommends avoiding fat in your pre-workout meal because it slows down your digestion. But eating protein supports your muscles. “During and after exercise, your muscle cells break down and rebuild,” Cohen explains. The right proteins contain the amino acids your muscles need to complete that cellular rebuilding process.Complete protein packages include animal sources like chicken or lean beef, since they have all those amino acids, Cohen says. Grains like quinoa and bulgur as well as beans and some vegetables also contain protein, though probably not the “complete” kind. But if you eat a variety of those food sources, you can skip the meat and still get all the amino acids you need, she adds.As for post-workout food, Cohen suggests eating or drinking more protein an hour or two after lifting weights for bodybuilders and athletes. But despite what you’ve heard, it’s not necessary (or healthy) to pound a massive protein shake the second you stop pumping iron. These 5 steps reveal the things you absolutely MUST AVOID if you want to slow the aging process, reclaim your health, Lose weight, and achieve your ideal body.

Help! My Girlfriend HATES the idea of me working out and dieting!?

I am trying to do the P90X work out and she hates it. I'm really into it and I've been doing 2 hours exercise everyday for a week now. She is extremely against the idea of me going on a diet and gets very upset when I order less food than i normally do. When we go out to eat, she decides to not eat at all when i order healthy things and considerably less than i usually do. She just says 'F it! I'm not eating anything then!', and then i end up not ordering anything because i don't want to eat alone and walk out having an argument down the street. I've got to listen to things like 'you've changed' and 'All you care about is yourself now'. I really love her but I'm not so sure if she's happy for me bettering my physical appearance. I want to get fit, not become a body builder looking type. At the moment i'm a stocky guy, not bad looking if i may say so, but on the fatter side (not obese). i just want to trim down and get a little ripped. She tells me she finds big ripped men unattractive, and she does, but i just want to get fit. She tells me i'm going all 'independant' now and do what i want, excercise without her, behind her back i'm having healthy meals etc.. but when i ask her to do it with me, she just tells me she hates it and how extreme p90x is and how it cant be healthy and how i'm getting obsessed with it. But the point of P90X is that it's INTENSE and gives fast results with the correct diet! What can i do? This is an 8 year relationship so far and it's under alot more strain than past times because of this.

My baby is underweight and does not eat.tried everything.please help?

My son was the same. It was hard work getting him to eat solids, and I would have to distract his attention him to get him to drink his bottles. It does get better though, and if he is physically fit and well he is probably getting much of what he needs. If you are concerned take him to your GP, they can give you vitamin supplements especially for babies to make sure that he is getting his full RDA.

Can you eat junk food and exercise and still get fit!!!?

I have exactly the same problem! I'm 15 and weight 8.10 stone. I love junk food but wouldn't really eat it as much if it wasn't for my mum forcing me to. It sounds bad, I know, but she doesn't really know she's doing harm. Anyway, I just ate two belgian cakes! I feel sooo fat now. Anyway, the key to maintain your weight is to burn off more calories than you eat, which is really hard so I would eat junk food in moderation..say one source of junk food a day. For example, one cake after tea. Then go and burn those calories off. Good luck:)

Can u exercise but eat junk food and still be fit?

If you have a high metabolism, you can eat crap and not gain weight, yes. But as they say, you are what you eat . . . Being skinny is not the same as being healthy. To be healthy, you need to put good things into your body.

I'm naturally skinny. I can eat like a horse and not gain weight, and on top of that, I'm hungry all the time. Know what, though? I've found that when I eat more nutritious foods - whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables, and so forth - I am more full with less food. A little bit of quality outweighs a lot of quantity. I feel better, too, than when I eat junk food. It's also helped me to eat more frequently during the day. I don't eat very large meals, but I have a granola bar between breakfast and lunch, and a fruit smoothie between lunch and dinner. I'm not nearly as hungry eating this way. You should try it.

You're thirteen. Your body is like a brand new car on its first test drive. Everything looks great, everything feels great. Imagine that car 20 years later . . . it might need a little more taking care of, yeah?

Someday, not too far down the road, your metabolism will slow down, and you won't be able to eat the way you do now. Best to prepare for it before you get to that point and gain 20 pounds in a month.
