What Things Do I Need To Record A Song

What do I need to record my first song at home?

Monitors - get ones with a flat frequency response so you can hear a true representation of the frequency spectrum of your music.Headphones- Not earbuds. Get some studio headphones. These help when recording vocals because you can hear the song but the vocal mic won't pick up the sound of the song. Only your voice.Interface - this is a piece of hardware that plugs into your computer via USB and allows you to connect an instrument or mic to your computer or to output your computer’s sound to speakers or another instrument.Computer - Unless you plan on using tape then this is the guts of your recording rig and it contains the DAW (recording software), the drivers for your hardware (MIDI keyboards, interfaces, VST's, and the like.), And any plug-ins you may have.Instrument - you need one to record music it can be either acoustic or MIDI.Software - a MIDI signal contains no audio. It is only the data about the note and how hard it was struck. You can send that data to your DAW (Digital audio workstation) and it will use the data to play a sound on a software synth (for example) called a VST. There are hundreds of VSTs out there and it is always good when starting to have a couple. These can be bought and downloaded online.

Do I need permission to record a cover song?

If you perform a cover song, at a live venue, there is no problem whatsoever. The venue is required to have the right license for music to be performed and for the songwriter(s) to get compensated. If you record a cover song, you have just entered a legal quagmire. This cannot be done without a license from the copyright holder (usually the songwriter), or you are in copyright infringement. Now, that said, it is a pretty painless process to get a mechanical license in order to make this recording. Note that getting a mechanical license is actually a compulsory licensing system. If the rights holder has the song registered with BMI (or whoever), they cannot deny permission to specific people. You pay the fee, you get the license. If you want to add that cover song to a video of some kind, such as the typical music video, then you are now talking about a synchronization license, and those are only offered on a per-project, individually negotiated basis. For that, you are basically needing an entertainment lawyer to get you the needed license. The exception is when you are just recording a live performance on video, in which case you are back to a mechanical license. For how to get a mechanical license: Which is the best way to gain a music mechanical copyright license?

What do i need to record a good quality metal song?

The interface is what you will plug your gear into (mic or instrument). If you have audacity, you could probably find an interface that works with that instead of having to learn a new program. However the link looks like it is to the mbox 2 mini and that will give you what you need along with protools. You will want either a mic to record your amp, or a pedal or DI or something to plug into the interface at line level. You probably wont want to record the guitar directly into the interface.

The Mbox is nice because it comes with protools, which is pretty much industry standard. You can spend a lot less and do pretty much the same thing. Sure the quality might not be protools level, but that doesn't really mean its bad. If it's just you recording you can get away with with something with only one or two inputs. If you have a band though you'll probably want to look into more inputs on your interface. Drums can require up to 10 or more (probably not as much outside of a professional setting).

How long should recording one song take in a pro studio?

You can record around 3 songs in one day. It will probably take around 3-4 hours per song, depending on how many voice-overs and loops that you want to use. And also how satisfied you are with each take. For example, it might take you 2 and a half days to record around 7-8 songs, if you are only recording vocals.

Your finalized, mixed, and mastered CD will more than likely be ready in 2-3 weeks if you have it done professionally.
My friends band recorded vocals for 7 songs in 3 days and had it mixed and finished in around 1 month. I hope this helps!! Good luck
