What To Add To A Convenient Store

Convenience Store Supplier?

To all dear Convenience store owners/managers,

I currently own a convenience store in Toronto Canada and business is not going very well. In fact, I get my products for my convenience store from Supermarkets such as NoFrills, Wall Mart, Food Basic and so on. As a result, I get the products at a higher price. Can anybody tell me the name of your suppliers such as lighters, advils, Tylenols, Cigarrettes, Drinks, etc. Your help will be greatly appreciated. I started this business for 2 months already because I have been working in the same place for 5 years and my former boss sold it to me due to his retirement, but my former boss used to get his products from supermarkets too.

Should i open a convenience store?

I believe a 19 year old is much too young to be tied down to a business. Finish school and wait till you are ready to settle down into your community.

If you are privileged, have lots of money to waste, can pay for a lot of experts to run your business for you so you can go to school and do all the other fun things 19 year old people do - then go for it.

Addition: You being a girl has nothing to do with the question nor my answer. I just don't think it is a good idea to get tied down so young. It is still a lot of money and only the beginning of the expenses. You really don't need the burden of this kind starting your adult life. You will have many more opportunities in the future.

If you insist that it is a good thing, have a written business plan, consult as many professionals as you can and get advise from a good attorney, banker and neutral real estate appraiser before you make your final decision.

Good luck

The meaning of convenience store?

The term convenience store comes from the fact that they are a shortcut, or convenience, to shopping. They are very small, and you can park right in front of the door. That way you can pick up your milk in 5 minutes instead of the 25 minutes involved in finding a parking spot near a grocery store, walking to the store, walking to the back of a huge building, and back to the front again, then waiting in line to pay for the milk, and finally finding your car and driving out of a parking lot.

How would I sell my product to a convenience store?

Thanks for the A2A.Cameron is right about small independent stores and about large chains. I would just add that large chains and even some small independents will usually work with distributors for most products. Not sure what your product is but I would assume something like hand wipes, some other chemical wipe or something auto related, etc. It might help to contact some of your Amazon and Ebay to further dive into their use for your product. Some might actually have convenience stores or similar. You can use that in your pitch. Some distributors are hard to start working with though and have some straight up outrageous fee structures and schemes. Start with small and local independents. If you can afford or risk it, provide them with some stock to run for a month or so in good placement for a trial run of your product.

What should I put on my convenience store marquee to attract customers?

FREE BEER!!!!

At a local convenience store, you purchase a cup of coffee, but ,at 98.40C, it is too hot to drink you add?

Steps..
(1) write an energy balance... heat gained by ice = heat lost by coffee
(2). replace heat with Q in 1 of 2 forms
.. ..Q = m Cp dT for a substance undergoing a temperature change WITHOUT a phase change
.. ..Q = m dHx (x = vap, fus, sub, etc.. depending on the phase change) for a substance undergoing
.. .. .. .. a phase change at constant temp.
(3).. solve for desired unknown

The idea is we change the temp of a substance in a constant phase, then change the phase at constant temp, then sum up the heats.

In this case
we warm the ice fro -2.20°C to its melting point at 0°C,
then melt the ice at 0°C
then warm the resulting liquid water from 0°C to the final temp of the coffee solution

********
like this...

Q ice = Q coffee

(m Cp dT) ice warming + (m dHfus) ice + (m Cp dT) liquid water warming = (m Cp dT) coffee.

plugging in some data...
(31.6g x Cp x (0°C - -2.20°C)) + (31.6g x dHfus) + (31.6g x 4.184 J/g°C x (Tf - 0°C)) = (248mL x 1g/1mL x 4.184 J/g°C x (98.40°C - Tf))

and of course...
(1) I assumed Cp coffee = Cp liquid water = 4.184 J/g°C
(2) you need to look up Cp ice and dHfus water.. from here
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water_(data...

Cp = 37.84 J/moleK x (1 mole / 18.02g) x (1°C / 1K) = 2.100 J/g°C
dHfus = 40.68 kJ/mole x (1000J / 1kJ) x (1 mole / 18.02g) = 2260 J/g

so that..
(31.6g x 2.100 J/g°C x (2.20°C)) + (31.6g x 2260J/g) + (31.6g x 4.184 J/g°C x (Tf - 0°C)) = (248mL x 1g/1mL x 4.184 J/g°C x (98.40°C - Tf))

I'll leave the algebra to you..

How do convenience stores decide what to sell and how to stock their products?

They initially get ideas from suppliers or franchise partners based on similar locations.  The ones that sell slow get dropped and ones asked for by customers a lot get added.  Mostly they buy from wholesalers who have regular routes in their area.  In highly ethnic neighborhoods they add ethnic products that may have to be shipped to them or obtained less frequently by a more distant distributor.

How does it make economic sense for convenience stores to be open 24/7? Do they really make enough sales at 3:00 in the morning to cover paying the clerk?

There are many things that convenience stores and gasoline retailers do well but one of their best abilities is research. Research shows that businesses that stay open 24 hours over the time sell more product, have higher sales, and potentially, if managed competently, make more money. The reasons are not all that clear as to why this is the case but it just is. I personally think it has much to do with inertia. An object in motion tends to stay in motion. A business always ready to conduct business is more likely to claim more business than the guy who takes eight hours off everyday. Besides, the name of the business is CONVENIENCE store. How convenient would we be if we were closed when the customer’s needs arise? Also, it should be noted that it is relatively inexpensive to keep a store open 24 hours. That third shift usually has reduced staffing and is the time when cleaning, deliveries, and restocking may occur, which are nearly impossible to do when there is a store full of needy customers. The object and purpose of the night shift is more than just being profitable. It is invaluable to the smooth running of the store during the day. I hope this helps.

How do you manage inventory at a small business like a convenience store?

Using a good inventory management software - that’s how! Gone are the days when folks owning convenience stores tracked inventory manually or even using Excel. Anybody who is serious about sustaining and growing their business would be be using one! And the very fact that you have asked this question on Quora shows that you are tech savy and mean business :)But before you look for a software, a good place to start would be to get your inventory management concepts right.Gather Your DataIf you are just starting out with managing your inventory, or even if you have lost track and want to get back now, the first step is to conduct a stock audit.NOTE: Make a note of all the products you sell across channels, including attributes such as their SKU and the exact location of the product in your warehouse.LABEL: If you are just starting out, the best thing to do is count and label all incoming stock from your vendors. As a best practice, this is also a time to check every product for damages.SYSTEMIZE: In your warehouse, label each shelf and every counter. On your product label as well as in your inventory management system of choice, make a note of the shelf number on which the product exists.ADJUST: During a stock audit, it is likely that you may find lost and damaged goods. If you do, write them off in your books of accounting appropriately. Remember to adjust your stock levels to reflect the actual stock in hand.DOUBLE CHECK: If you have products that are currently in transit to your warehouse, make a note to check and add them to your inventory when they arrive.Track Useful MetricsWhat should be your Maximum stock level? How much Lead time for your vendors to restock? What should your reorder level be?While at first it might seem complicated, start off simply by tracking the products you sell most often. Isn't is possible that convenience store owners or employees could cheat on the lottery using scratch tickets?

I am in no way a scientist or engineer, but it seems like in this day and age, it would be possible for some type of X-Ray-esque or scanner device to reveal the numbers or symbols under a scratch card without actually scratching the boxes.

If there is no such invention that could be used for this purpose, I'm willing to bet the technology for creating such a device does exist.

Could that ever be an issue?

Perhaps a proprietor or employee of a gas station uses it.

Every time stacks of scratch tickets come into the store for sale, they go through them and whenever one of the tickets has a sizeable prize, such as over a thousand, they buy it and redeem it for themselves, putting only the losing and chump change scratcher out for sale.

Could the day come where this is an issue?
