There are several, actually.In Galveston, down I 45, the best known is Stewart Beach, which has parking, concessions and has an admission charge. There are also free public beaches along Sewall Blvd., the parking is not free. There are East and West Beach that are free. Beaches run the range of good to poor. There are no beaches on the upper coast of Texas that match those of South Padre island or Corpus Christi.Take the Ferry to Bolivar and there are miles of free beaches.( still within 2 hrs) Old HWY 87 in Bolivar was seriously eroded many years ago by a hurricane and since it is a very rural, even desolate area with few beach houses and fishing camps, was only partially repaired. If you have a four wheel drive vehicle, you can find areas for overnight camping on very rustic beaches where on week days there may be no other folks except the occasional law enforcement patrols.Note: there are no official clothing optional public beaches in Texas, but a certain amount of skinny dipping goes on in this area.
