What To Do When You Have Good Ideas

What is the difference between a good idea and a bad idea?

If you make a conscious effort to try to think of startup ideas, you will think of ideas that are not only bad, but bad and plausible sounding. Meaning you and everybody else will be fooled by them. You'll waste a lot of time before realizing they're no good. -- Paul GrahamIn the context of a startup business, most ideas are bad ideas. Sorry to break it to you, but most your ideas are probably bad ideas, in the context of starting a business.Paul Graham and Peter Thiel have some really profound advice on the subject, in their lectures Before the Startup and Competition is for Losers respectively. You need to be able to create a product that a small number of people really love, not a large number of people like. You need to create a product that has the potential to establish a niche monopoly, and then expand that monopoly.Listen and read those lectures, you'll get a better feel for good ideas and bad ideas.Anything that can be reduced to a commodity is a bad idea. Anything that is highly competitive is a bad idea. Anything that can be fast copied that doesn't engender customer loyalty, lock-in or network effects is a bad idea. Anything that costs more to acquire customers than you get back in customer lifetime value is a bad idea.

Why do great ideas come when you are on a toilet or in a bath?

According to the best science to date, the subconscious creates all thoughts, decisions, and everything ever imagined. It is a data processing machine, and has no awareness. If it did, then it could override millions of years, of evolution. Such a species could never survive. The subconscious is capable of mixing and matching a million bits of long term memory. Think of memory bits as Lego Toy pieces. While you’re awake, the data processing is continuous. It’s running simulations, for every choice, and predicting the outcome for each. When you’re idle, and there are no choices, or no major choices, the subconscious searches for patterns and connections. If these patterns and connections have a low priority, then they will remain hidden. At times, every human will act out of character. It provides some evolutionary advantage, otherwise it wouldn’t be Universal. It might give us a different perspective, or generate a question.Genes give us better odds of survival, and procreation. Questions do the exact same thing. Get out of your comfort zone. Do and learn new things. Seek questions, that no one has ever asked. Then take time to ponder your navel.

I have good Idea but no team for my Start-Up, Where can I find a good team?

When it comes to startups, ideas are cheap.Anyone can have a good idea; if you spent a weekend with your friends “ideating,” I’m certain that you would collectively have at least 10 good business ideas between you.The hard part is execution.--------------------------------------------------It ultimately starts with you.You are the founder.Talented, inspired people will be attracted to you based on your charisma and demonstrated commitment to the project. Ergo, it’s imperative that you do everything you can to build your idea out to the best of your ability before you go looking for a team:Try to have an MVP (minimum viable product) well on its way to completion. If you don’t know how to build your product, head over to a site like fiverr.com and find someone who does.Make a website. And make it look nice.Put some of your own money on the line.Once all that is done and you’re confident that it’s time to look for a team, I would do this:Figure out what you need. A coder? A manager? An accountant? The more specific the better.Contact everyone in your network who you think might be interested. Utilise LinkedIn, Facebook, the contact list on your phone, alumni networks from your schools, your coworkers, your gym buddies - hell even your mom, dad, brother, and sister!Ask your network to contact people in their network - say something like this: “Hey I’ve got this really cool idea I’m working on, do you know anyone who might be interested in getting involved? I’m looking for someone who can...”If nothing else works: get on sites like AngelList.com, cofounderslab.com, www.founder2be.com, etc, and list your startup. Link your nice website, and throw up a few adds for positions. .Find entrepreneurship conferences close to you. If you’re in a big city, this will be easy. New York? Boom. Chicago? Boom. LA? Boom. Finally, be really passionate about whatever it is you are doing. If you’re pumped and inspired about your idea, people will naturally be attracted to working with you on it.People like me! If you have a good idea and you need a broadly skilled team member, find me on LinkedIn and send me a message!Good luck!
