How can Africans grow hair when we naturally have short hair?

The way hair grows varies from person to person. How it grows depends on many factors. But, one thing is for certain, unless you have a medical condition or take medication that affects hair growth or hormones, it's going to grow. Everyone has different hair types. I'm not sure if you have heard of the 1 2 3 4 a b c scale? For example, I have naturally 3a and 3b hair. This means that some of my hair is curly in an S shape and some of my hair curls in a spiral shape. The higher the number and further the alphabet, the tighter the curl. 1a hair being practically straight and 4c hair heing coily. Curls are usually classified as wavy, curly, and coily. It can appear like you have short hair that just won't grow if you have tight curls or coily hair, but it is growing. If you stretch a section of hair out or straighten it, you can see how long your hair really is. Everyone has a terminal length (hair stops growing after a certain point) and how fast your hair grows depends on how long your antigen phase is (when hair is actively growing). This can last from 2 to 7 years. Sometimes longer. Each hair is at a different phase at any given point. Regardless of race, all hair grows the exact same way unless their are issues. So don't worry. You're hair is growing.

Black women, what's wrong with your natural hair?

I agree with everyone who has said it's a media influence. Think about it...if the media had more actresses, singers, etc. with natural hair, I guarantee you would see more natural hair out on the street. No one likes to admit it, but to an extent we are all conformers. Everyone wants to feel as though they're a part of society. Take the 1970's for example...with "Say it Loud! I'm black and I'm proud." Even non-black people were buying wigs and weaves to have the "nappy" look.

I am a black girl and I've just recently been wearing my natural hair since I've been in college. I did my big chop back in middle school after my hair was damaged with a relaxer, and I was frequently made fun of because I was wearing it natural. Granted, I wasn't as educated in natural hair back then as I am now but looking back I realize that my hair looked better than most black girls who had short half "nappy" half "straight hair" that was obviously damaged and it looked ten times better than the people who would wear the same tired weave over and over again just to have "the look"

I finally got to the point where I felt like I was trying to be something that I wasn't. I'd literally stay home from school if something came up where my mom didn't have time to do my hair to avoid the taunts and the glares from certain uneducated people who didn't understand my natural beauty. Looking back at pictures of myself with a relaxer and with various fake ponytails and wigs, I realized that I was hiding from my true self. I am all for natural beauty and I feel so much more comfortable now that I am in my own skin. I wish more women of various cultural backgrounds would realize that they are beautiful the way they are and not spend thousands of dollars buying into media standards that change and become more intensely ridiculous with time. I urge you to do your research and find out what's in the products that you use to alter your hair and to read up on where "human" hair really comes from.

That is all...

How long will it take to grow out short hair?

Your hair grows 6" every year. This is just without any scams! Hair vitamins will not make your hair 'grow' but it gives your hair and nails the nutrients it needs and forces more pressure to go to the hair/nails, but it is helpful. Drink/eat plenty of calcium,(milk, cheese, yoghurt) as this is very good for all of your body. I have very long hair my self and I take no pills etc. what I do,I don't go to hair dressers because they cut off where abouts the dead ends will be because it takes to long doing it properly,so when I look at hair and see a spill it end i individually cut it off,you don't have to do it all at once so that's okay! This way doesn't take chunks of your hair away. Try oils too ! Hair growth oils. Ugh it took ages writing this because my webs messed up but I just wanted to help you

Help me pick a style for my natural hair?

I'm African American with natural hair. This is my texture: http://www.flickr.com/photos/61899950@N0…

My hair is about 4 inches long at the longest point and it gets shorter as you go to the back. At my neck the hair is about an inch long.

I usually wear my hair in either a plain afro or a two-strand twist out. I'm really, really tired of both styles. Whenever I ask a professional for a suggestion on a professional looking style, they only recommend a twist out. Are there any other styles I can try? I would like the style to be non-damaging to my hair as I'm really trying to get it to grow - meaning nothing that is going to dry it out (no heat, no relaxers, no chemicals). I am also not interested in expensive hair extensions and I'm not keen on wearing a wig. I like my natural hair, I just need ideas on new ways to style it while I try to grow it out.
