How does one become a 'true' Batman fan?

I've played the two recent Batman video games, and while exploring Gotham I found myself wishing I knew every little detail as to what was going on... So, my question is, where would I start? I don't really mind buying comics, but I doubt I'll be able to find the FIRST Batman comic just lying around, so an online resource might be more reasonable. Any advice or tips are appreciated, thanks for your time!

Would Batman fans like him just as much if his story was exactly the same but he wasn’t human?

In 1939, when Batman was created, animal lead characters were basically a kiddie stuff.Batman is an offspring from hard-boiled pulp heroes. They were all too human. If he had not been created in 1939, he wouldn't have the same resonance he has now. Part of it is recognition, part of it is story development over decades.Non-human Batman-like characters would be more common in the 70s and 80s. But then they would clearly be copycats. Or copybats.15 Most Blatant Batman Rip-Offs

Is I'm Your Villain by Franz Ferdinand about The Joker from Batman?

I was listening to it today, and here are some reasons why I think it's about The Joker:
"But serious
You're so serious"
"If I could laugh I'd love you
If I could smile at anything you said"

Is drawing fan art privately illegal? Like, drawing Batman and giving it to your sister as a birthday present without publishing it?

Most likely, yes. See this article:Is Fan Art Illegal?Do you own the character in question?Yes? Do what you please! No? You have no legal right to profit from work featuring characters without permission from copyright holder. No? You have almost no rights to create such works not for a profit, either. However, most likely scenario is that holders of the rights will not bother you because of it. They could, if they wanted, though.Another thing you should keep in mind is fair use. Fair USE allows use of characters for purposes of parody and news reporting (for example: Fair use - Wikipedia ).
