What should I major in if I want to be a neurosurgeon?
Well, a neurosurgeon is a medical doctor, so the most obvious choices would be biology, chemistry, physics, biochemistry, etc etc. Something in the sciences. However, that should never be the case all the time. Those are just the majors that several people go after when becoming a doctor, because people associate “doctor” with “science.” And also, because it kind of prepares you for the science material you would need for the MCAT, when the time comes to study for it of course. But becoming a neurosurgeon, or ANY type of doctor, does not mean that you have to do only science. The MCAT also has math, and it has reading, and english comprehension, in addition to science. You can major in ANYTHING you want to become a doctor.I know of many people who have been accepted to medical school and are on their ways to becoming doctors by majoring in something like SPANISH, or NUTRITION, or SOCIOLOGY. So what you choose as your major for undergrad does not really matter. The only thing that matters for whatever major you decide in, is getting good grades in it. You HAVE to have a high GPA for whatever major and classes you choose to do. That’s what gets you into medical school. And what better to major in than something which you like doing? So choose a major YOU like, and something which you know you love to learn about. You also have to do good on your MCAT exam in addition to having a high GPA, and that is achieved through a LOT of practice practice practice.
What do Neurosurgeons major in?
Neurosurgeons can major in anything.First, you go to college to get your Bachelor’s Degree. That can be in anything. Then, you go to medical school. Then, you do a neurosurgery residency and become board-certified as a neurosurgeon.Since that isn’t a very helpful answer, majors don’t really matter once you’re in medical school. Pick a major that makes you happy and that you can get a high GPA in. This looks good to medical schools. Then do well in medical school, so that you can be chosen for a neurosurgery residency. That’s about it.Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Biomedical Engineering, Statistics, and even English are good majors for medical school.
Psychology major to be a neurosurgeon?
That would tend you more towards psychiatry, but that is not a bad thing. A psychiatrist I see regularly to manage the psychological impact of an underlying arthritic condition tells me psychiatrists and neurologists study a very similar program for the first couple of years of their residency. I say go for it if you like it. Thanks Bill
If you want to be a neurosurgeon, should you major in biology of neuroscience?
Medical schools want diverse applicants. Major in the field that you find most interesting and will score highest in. The goal will be to get the highest GPA you can and also to do as well on the MCAT as possible.Your undergrad scores will only help you get into medical school. They won’t be relevant for a career as a neurosurgeon. Instead, your medical school performance (especially on the US Medical Licensing Exam [USMLE]) will determine whether you get into a residency program for General Surgery.Your performance in that residency will determine whether you get into a fellowship for neurosurgery. So, Biology or Neuroscience are fields you can major in at university in order to get the required prerequisites, but you must make sure you actually are interested in those fields and think you’ll do well in, rather than one you think the admissions committee wants to see.Good luck.
What Should My College Major Be To Become A Neurosurgeon?
You can major in anything, from bio (most popular) to music, and as long as you take the premed classes you'll have a shot at med school. Major in something you can use if you don't get in, because most people don't. If you do get into med school, that's another 4 years, followed by 5 years of general surgical residency and then 5 years of neurosurgery fellowship. 18 years of college and training before you can get a job on your own.
What is the best undergraduate major that a neurosurgeon could have?
My brother who is an amazing surgeon for the hospital in Orlando Florida didn’t realize he wanted to be a doctor until after his undergrad. His undergrad was in business. But because he did so spectacular in school and had great internships and extra curricular, he was able to go to a great school. He also made it into a really amazing fellowship.Common undergrads for potential doctors are probably premed, and chemistry. From what I have learned from the two surgeons in our family is to undergrad in something that is challenging, but that you are great at and interested in. Just make sure you can impress future colleges with your academics, internships, and extra curricular activities! Colleges love diversity, and accept many backgrounds. If you have some colleges in mind you would like to attend, you could call and talk to an advisor, or check out the information on their website!Good luck!!
What subjects do I have to major in high school to be a neurosurgeon?
SAT or University Acceptance test material. You can memorize all the brain anatomy and physiology you can get your hand into.BUTif you can not get acceptance into medical school that would be pointless.
Should I major in neurobiology if I intend to become a neurosurgeon?
NO! We need people who are well rounded. Study liberal arts and develop your people skills. Medical school and residency will teach you everything you need to know about the nervous system. what they will not teach you is all the other things you need to be successful. Lastly, pick an undergraduate degree in which you are most interested, you’ll perform better and maintain a level of passion which cannot be faked.
Is neuroscience the best major to become a neurosurgeon?
Only if a student is passionate about the subject. Before you become a neurosurgeon, you have to get into medical school as a pre-med which can be a grind if you are not interested in your major.Once you are in medical school, you still have to do very well in the USMLE tests as neurosurgery is a sought after residency that more or less requires high scores on those tests as there are very few slots. By then your college major will be far behind you.I would have loved to have taken neuroscience, but it was not offered to me. But any major is fine for medical school as long as you have a high GPA, great MCAT scores and a host of non-measurable qualities that the schools are looking for.
