The Kingdom of Aksum (also known as the Aksumite Empire) was an ancient state located in the highlands of modern-day Ethiopia and Eritrea that thrived between the 1st and 7th centuries CE. It was a major player in the commerce between the Roman Empire and Ancient India. Northern Somalia was an important link in the Horn of Africa, connecting the region's commerce with the rest of the ancient world. Somali sailors and merchants were the main suppliers of frankincense, myrrh and spices, all of which were valuable luxuries to the Ancient Egyptians, Phoenicians, Mycenaeans (Greeks), Babylonians and Romans.

What are the impacts of Arabs on the East African communities?

Arabs have been trading with East Africans before they started settling in roughly 11th century. Arabs, specifically Omanis have a lot of influence in East Africa from language to culture to architecture and many others.Swahili language as we know it have a lot of Arabic words. The following are numbers in swahili (1–10)Moja Mbili Tatu Nne Tano Sita Saba Nane Tisa Kumi.Tell me which ones are Arabic? Also before the arrival of Europeans Swahili was being written with Arabic script. When visiting old swahili towns you will realize that the architecture have a lot of influence from omani Arabs. Sure they are somehow different from Arabic architecture for many buildings but there are some buildings with purely Arabic architecture. The swahili architecture as they say is amalgamation of these architectures.Omanis were seafarers and they would bring other cultures from other places to East Africa. Together with Persians, Indians and Chinese the Omanis played a big part in intercultural exchange in East Africa. In coastal East Africa Islam is the main religion. It is believed that East Africans started to convert to Islam with contact with Omanis.Dressing too is heavily influenced by Arabs. East Africans men rock thawbs and keffiyeh. Spotting Abayas in coastal East Africa is easy but they have somehow gave it East African ‘twist’.There are a lot of admixture in coastal East Africa mainly the Arabs and Swahili admixture but you will get even Indians and some other groups from Asia in the mix. Arabs didn't segregate too much and mixed marriages seems to have been normal. They believed that all Muslims were equal. Also Arabic slave trade happened. Most slaves were from interior East Africa. This impacted a lot of lives. In places like Malawi there were villages without men. When Portuguese first came to Africa they wanted to create colonies from East Africa all the way to west Africa along coastal lines. The Omanis fought off Portuguese and the only remaining presence of them in East Africa is Fort Jesus. Portuguese managed to create a colony southwards in present day Mozambique. This is the place where Omani Arabs never operated at. Portuguese were in East Africa in 1500s, 300 years before Berlin conference. The trade and interaction is the reason East African coastal region was much developed and urbanised that interior Eastern Africa. Interior Eastern Africa started trading with Swahili people much later and this lead to spread of Swahili.

What role did slavery play in African societies before the transatlantic slave trade began, and what was the effect of European involvement?

African, and European cultures first, and foremost are very different from each other, and handled slavery in totally two different manners.Europeans where the only people who took slavery outside of their country, went and settle in someonelse’s land, took their resources in most cases, wiped out their history, and forced the remaining people to assimilate into a culture that was not theirs. The transatlantic trade went from Europe to Africa, Africa to the Caribbean, then the Caribbean back to Europe. Europeans sold guns, liquor, and linen in exchange for people to build thier colonies in the United States, growm their plantations in the Caribbean and fund their economy in Europe. They built forts on the exterior of the island. Eurpoeans practice in what was called chattel slavery where the person was a piece of property, and the children, and grandhildren would be slaves for life. They had no association with the slaves they purchased, new nothing about their heritage, culture or customs. They were not well fed, and the conditions in which they lived in were deplorable. In West Africa, and Central Africa there was no uniformed government at the time, but had tribes and chiefs that function like a family unit. Africans enslaved people based on debt that the person may have owed, committed a crime or because they were captured in war. Africans not like Europeans had a slave system of servitude. Enslaved Africans lost the protection of their family, and place in society. Their children may become a part of the masters family and become free. Many African slaves were treated, and fed well, and could own slaves themselves, and some slaves worked in government administration, the military, as domestic servants or agricultural labourers. Africans usually enslaved other people not their own particular ethnic or cultural group, and the enslavement was on a smaller scale.Nevertheless, the European transatlantic slave trade laid the foundation for modern capitalism as we know it today, and left a negative impact on Africa itself with half of its population gone, social, and political weakening of its societies that left them open to 19 century exploitation, and colonial domination.

What are the biggest differences between West Africa and East Africa; culturally, economically, and politically?

West Africa comprises of many countries unlike East Africa which has 5 countries (Tanzania,Kenya,Uganda,Rwanda and Burundi). If you were to choose West Africa you'll still have a hard task of choosing between 18 countries compared to East Africa were you'll only have 5 fewer options which you can also dig deeper to learn about their culture and political stands. Don't go to West Africa (reasons)1. As I said before you'll still have to choose between 18 countries. 2. West Africa is not settled i.e the case of Boko Haram in Nigeria which also affects some neighboring countries3. Culturally, its hard to say because there are 18 countries each with unique culture. There may also be cultural differences between a country. Go to East Africa (reasons)1. You only have 5 countries to choose from. You can spend 5 days studying each country then you pick one with less effort. 2. East Africa is rich in nature and attract millions of tourists around the globe. You can vist some during your free time or weekends. 3. East Africa is peaceful. Not mentioning Burundi. 4. There is no big cultural differences between East Africans
