A spaniel might be a good bet. They're generally medium and reasonably well behaved on the whole. Plus they're one of the more trainable varieties of dog. I have a brittany and he's a sweetie, but springer spaniels are also very nice I am told. Just make sure to research breeds beforehand so you know what you're getting into.

Why don’t you start by visiting your local shelter? You will see many dogs in desperate need of a good home and you can talk to the staff there who will help you choose a dog - preferably 2 dogs because they do like company when you are not at home. You do need to do a lot of research since this is a commitment for many years. You can get books on different breeds and their characteristics as a kicking off point, but keep in mind that mixed breeds are generally less prone to problems that are inherent in certain breeds.
