What Types Of Ports Are Available On Port Expanders

What types of ports or available on a port expander?

I've not heard of a port expander.. but a port replicator - yes.

A port replicator will offer many of the ports that a desktop has.. but make it available through a USB connection.
On older models, you may have 2x DIN-5 connectors ( the old green and pink keyboard/mouse connections), one or two d-sub 9 serial ports (good for a really old Palm Pilot, and some "null modem" cables .. even some early joysticks, mice, and flight controllers)
- a big 25-pin parallel port ( usually for a printer), anywhere from 1 to 5 USB ports ( versions 1, 1.1, or 2.. not many with USB 3 yet) .. 15-pin VGA, audio / headphone jack, and possibly a slot for a card.
Newer models may have any or all of those.. plus more modern ports:
USB 2.0, firewire, eSATA, scsi, displayport , DVI video, etc.

Originally, these were made for laptops instead of a full "docking" base.
In some places, they have a use with desktops, because it brings all the connectors in to view.. not hidden behind the computer case.

4 port wireless router, not enough ports for all my devices what can I do?

You have a couple of choices, one is to install an 8 port hub and use it or change a computer or two over to wireless there by freeing up a couple of ports. The computers only need a wireless card which if you hunt the computer stores you should be able to find them for reasonable prices. Then you need to go into the router and setup the wireless security etc and enter the password into the computers for connection. The security is to stop a neighbour from stealing your internet connection or accessing your network.

How do I disable a LPT port on a windows XP PC.?

This is how a person would disable an LPT port in Windows XP.

1. Double click on the My Computer Icon on the desktop.
2. Once My Computer opens up the user needs to look at the column on the left hand side of the screen where all of the options are.
3. Look for the option that reads View System Information.
4. Click on that line.
5. Once that is done a new window will pop up and there will be a number of tabs above it. Click on the one that reads Hardware.
6. Then a new window will replace the old one and the first section in this new window will give you the option to open up your device manager and there will be a button that reads device manager. Click on it.
7. After you've clicked on the Device Manger button, you will see the all-too-familiar list of file folders with plus signs next to each one. Each one of these plus signs is to the left of a piece of hardware that is running your system. (As you look straight at the screen)
8. There will be a folder that reads Ports-LPT & COM right on it.
9. click on the plus sign next to it.
10. a branch will appear that lists the different types of ports that are available on your computer.
11. Right click this line and it will turn blue and a window will appear.
12. One of the words in this window will be Disable because the hardware is already Enabled.
13. Click on the world Disable and that will disable that port or those ports.

Unless you really know what your doing in the device manager there isn't really a reason why you should be there. Just keep in mind that once you've disabled those ports, that you may not be able to successfully connect a printer, scanner or anything else that is considered a peripheral device.

The LPT and COM ports are not the actual jack that one would plug in a USB or IEEE or 1394 into. Those ports are the peripheral ports that the computer recognizes for hardware connections.

How many ports available exists on TCP/IP?

In total there is 65535 UDP/TCP ports allocated . This number comes from an unsigned 16 bit integer. 2^16-1=65535. However, the first 1024 port numbers are reserved for common applications such as ftp (20,21), ssh (22), http (80) etc. This means that for other common applications there is "only" 64511 available port numbers.
If you write your own TCP/IP client server application, you are not allowed to use < reserved port number. But the 64511 available ones should be enough.

Right now, your computer has 65535 potential ports to use over the internet.  What's a port, right?Think of a port, like a porthole in a ship.  It is a window or point of access to a specific place.  You can redirect them in a router, take something sent to one port and alter the path to another.  POP3 email programs, like Outlook or Thunderbird, send and receive email through specific ports.... 110 and 995 for receiving email, ports 25, 2525, and 443 for sending email, and ports 143 and 993 for connecting to IMAP servers.  VNC servers typically accept connections on 5900, while pushing the java client on port 5800.Your web browser works on port 80.  Port 8080 is typically used for a personally hosted web server, when the ISP restricts this type of usage for non-commercial customers.  If you were going to host your own website from your computer, you would prefer to be able to do so on port 80, since this would mean that anyone connecting to your computer wouldn't have to add a port number to the end of the WWW address you paid for.  They could just connect to it, or to your specific IP address, and they'd have the website visible in their browser, while being served from your desktop or laptop. Some ISPs want to avoid people paying for a cheaper home connection, but using it for commercial webservice.  So, they restrict access on port 80.  To get around this, you can use whatever port you like.  You could use port 12345 if you wanted to.  Port 8080 is the just the default second choice for a webserver.

Ports to forward for a PS3?

Okay well i need to change my NAT type and dont know how to open the ports. My router is the GT704WG router, which is about 1 to 2 years old. I went to my router from http://192.168.1.1 and went to Security --> Applications and have no idea what to do next. Ive seen pictures of boxes where you can type the port but all this gives me is game "Available Rules" and Categories for what they are used for, (Ex. Games, Apps, Servers). So any help? And what ports do i need to open?

How can I tell what speed/type my USB Ports are?

Two types of USB 1.1 (slow) and USB 2.0 (fast)
Your hard drive will work on both; but on 1.1 data transfer will be slow (not a problem for accessing files and working with them like word documents, excel). If you have huge transfers (like 10GB) it will take time)

1) Try all ports. Sometimes on motherboards, a couple are 2.0 and some 1.1.

2) If Windows says "HI-SPEED DEVICE PLUGGED INTO NON HIGH SPEED ..." then the port is 1.1

3) You can look it up via control panel > device manager > Universal Serial Bus > Properties
(-- but point 2 works easier)

4) If you want to go for a high speed (2.0) port (if have none on your mobo) --> you can get PCI USB 2.0 card.
Generally costs around $20-$25.

There are cheap ones available at $10 but drivers won't work well everytime and it will be more slower overall.

Total ports , Reserved and Open Ports ?

Meanings: IP Address(Internet protocol address): A network address serves as a unique identifier for a computer on a network. When set up correctly, computers can determine the addresses of other computers on the network and use these addresses to send messages to each other. 2)Proxy:It is a computer system or router that breaks the connection between sender and receiver. Functioning as a relay between client and server, proxy servers help prevent an attacker from invading a private network and are one of several tools used to build a firewall. The word proxy means "to act on behalf of another," and a proxy server acts on behalf of the user. All requests from clients to the Internet go to the proxy server first. The proxy evaluates the request, and if allowed, re-establishes it on the outbound side to the Internet. Likewise, responses from the Internet go to the proxy server to be evaluated. The proxy then relays the message to the client. Both client and server think they are communicating with one another, but, in fact, are dealing only with the proxy. 3)Port:In computer networking, the term port can refer to either physical or virtual connection points. Physical network ports allow connecting cables to computers, routers, modems and other peripheral devices. Several different types of physical ports available on computer network hardware include: Ethernet ports USB ports serial ports Virtual ports are part of TCP/IP networking. These ports allow software applications to share hardware resources without interfering with each other. Computers and routers automatically manage network traffic traveling via their virtual ports. Network firewalls additionally provide some control over the flow of traffic on each virtual port for security purposes. Instructions on how to know your Internet settings: Start > Run Type cmd Press enter Type ipconfig (in the new black dos box) Press enter It is the line that says IP address after you have pressed enter in the black box

80(default)/8080(occasionally) is the listening port for incoming requests. However the sending port depends on the client.Example:Suppose A is the browser(client) and B is the server(http server).A wants some html file/image from B.Before making a http request, it requests the OS(Windows/Mac/Linux) for an available port.OS provides a port number between 1024 and 49151(for more info refer to Port (computer networking)).A makes a GET request to retrieve some html file/image from B.B is listening on port 80 for incoming http requests.B gets a request , fetches the file and sends the file to A.A(12345) <- - - - - ->B(80)For A:source port : 12345,destination:80For B:source port:80 destination:12345.To know why 80 is the default port refer to Why was 80 Chosen as the Default HTTP Port and 443 as the Default HTTPS Port?
