Why does my female African Cichlid change color?
what species do you have? i have 4 tanks of africans and love them! females can take on the dominant role, even take on male coloration! it has to do with breeding, aggression, pecking orders over food and their territory in the tank. this is normal behavior. i have seen a few of mine change colors right before my eyes, and they change during feeding time too. she is changing color as a sign that she is dominant.. and if someone challenges her she will put them in their place--which is below her.
There's a crack in my fish bowl?
Personally I'd buy him a new tank. The crack may look like nothing but could start to leak or crack more..neither would be good. I'd suggest picking up a 5 gallon heated/filtered tank. Bowls are really actually unsuitable for betta's (or any animal) and a 5 gallon would be easier to maintain as well. Also they don't tend to cost that much money. Some of those bowls cost more than a proper tank if you can believe it :] Good Luck :]
Who was/is the most personally honorable President in U.S. history? Did his character and integrity make a real positive difference, or did it hobble his ability to either compromise or be decisive?
I will answer this with a few caveats:No man is a saint. You can find character flaws in any human being, including any of the 45 Presidents. And it’s entirely subjective as to which of those flaws are the most glaring to someone else.As I’ve said before, to be an effective POTUS, sometimes a person has to be an SOB. It’s part of the job. Try to be a nice guy all of the time and you’re Jimmy Carter, who was personally honorable but also a completely ineffective President. With that said, there have been plenty of Presidents who were generally men of good personal integrity, but were still flawed human beings just like anyone else. Just for a few examples, George Washington owned slaves, Ulysses S. Grant drank too much, Abraham Lincoln was a racist, Grover Cleveland was at least guilty of ungentlemanly behavior toward a woman, and possibly much worse. John F. Kennedy was a serial philanderer. Both Carter and Ronald Reagan had episodes where they pandered to racists for political gain.If I had to pick any one person, it would probably be Harry Truman, which won’t be a surprise to a lot of my regular readers. But even that comes down to personal values. A lot of people would blanch at choosing the man who ordered “The Bomb” to be dropped on anyone. I agree with Truman’s own view—as odious as it was, many more would have died if he hadn’t given the order.Sometimes you have to be an SOB to be the President.
How tall was Alexander the Great?
Difficult to say because his tomb was destroyed in Alexandria, and his remain - something that would have proved he once lived, was discarded and has never been found till today. But I think I read somewhere that he was between 5′6″ and 5′7″ and athletically built. And that is particularly tall for most people in the med. at 5′1″ in those days. One hint: Alexander at 5′8″ would have been a little tall and a little heavy for a horse jockey, as many of his soldiers at 5′1″ could easily out ride him.His father’s height - if we are to go by the found remain with one bad leg, is 5′8″ - same height as our dearest General Ulysses Grant of the Union Army, when a towering Lee, General of the Confederate Army standing at almost 5’11″, surrendered his sword to him.
What's a good bottom feeder for a 2.5 gallon tank?
Nope. Bottom feeder fish are all out. They are either too large, too delicate, need large schools, produce too much waste, are too active or all of the above. In a 2.5 I think you are fully stocked with a snail and a betta. If you are really good about water changes, though, and can get hold of some java moss, cherry or ghost shrimp would be lovely. :) EDT: Cories are too large, too active and need a school to be happy. In a 10 gallon you could keep some pygmy cories, in a 15 gallon some pandas or in a 20 gallon normal cories would be fine. Definitely none in under 10 gallons, though. You can feed ghost shrimp algae chips, but mostly they will be happy scavenging around picking up what your betta has left and nibbling on microscopic stuff. They do best in tanks with a few live plants. :) Also, forgot to say earlier, congratulations on the upgrade. :)
Can a fiddler crab survive in my community tank without any land to walk on?
I have several of these, and they make great pets because they are so low maintenance. But there are two things they definitely need...at least a little aquarium salt, and a place to get out of the water. It doesn't have to be "land"...but something like a plant or piece of wood that sticks out of the water (they are good climbers). They don't need to walk around on dry land, but they do need to be able to get their body completely out of the water occasionally. If they cant get out of the water, they will probably die within a month or two. They are not fully aquatic. Contrary to popular belief, they are not freshwater, so your pet store guy was right. They need small levels of salt in the water to complete their molting process. They don't need a lot. The normal dosage for regular aquarium salt will work, but Marine salt (like Instant Ocean) is better because it has calcium in it they need for shell growth. Kudos to your pet store guy...the vast majority of pet store people believe Fiddlers Crabs will live in freshwater, which is wrong. They don't even need the full dosage level of aquarium salt, but they do need at least a little. There is a difference between Marine salt and aquarium salt. Aquarium Salt (- http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.js... -) is intended for Freshwater tanks. Marine Salt (- http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.js... -) is intended for saltwater tanks. The dosage instructions on the box are not the same. If you use Instant Ocean, dilute it to 1/5 normal dosage. Once you set up their base conditions properly, these things are awesome. They are fun to watch and require no additional maintenance other than occasional water changes. They can survive entirely on algae growing in the tank, fish poop, live plants, ect.. They don't need a lot of space (I have 3 in a 6 gallon aquarium and they are thriving). Many freshwater fish (including goldfish and bettas) can survive in the same salt levels as Fiddler Crabs. I have a community tank with goldfish, bettas, and fiddler crabs and the crabs still seem to get along with them just fine after a year.
HELP!!! My sucker fish just had babies :S?
I cleaned out my tank just before an realised i forgot to put chlorinator in. i went back into my room & put it in & realised one of my sharks were dead. I took it out & soon realised i only have ONE shark when i should now have TWO. (I started with three!) While looking for my other shark i lifted up half of the shipwreck out came heaps baby sucker fish. I quickly put the shipwreck back down hoping they would go back in it beacuase my angelfish were starting to eat the ones that came out!! I freaked out and put my 2 angel fish & 2 gouramis (took the gouramis out just incase they tried to eat the babies too)so now they are sitting in buckets in my room. I took as many of the babies as a could & put them in another tank i had. In ther is a filter, stones on the bottom, half of the shipwreck & some seaweed. Do i need anything else for them? Do i just give them normal fishfood? Should i put rocks and stuff 2 hide in in the other tank for the babies that i cudnt get out? HELP
