What Would You Want To See In A Non-twilight Style Vampire Novel

Why don't people like twilight?

Twilight has no plot.
Twilight has no purpose.
Twilight has no message.
Twilight has no symbolism.
Twilight has cardboard characters.
Twilight promotes unhealthy relationships.
Twilight glorifies suicide.
Twilight is one of the most poorly written novels I have ever encountered.
Twilight is anti-feminist.
Twilight has purple prose.
Twilight is on a 5th grade reading level. That says enough about the writing.
Twilight doesn't make you think at all. That automatically makes it a shitty book in my eyes.
Twilight's characters are cardboard. They are two dimensional, lack believability, and have no depth whatsoever.
Twilight is the cheesiest thing since soap operas. Edward's lines make me want to barf.
Edward is also an abusive stalker.

In other words, Twilight lacks every quality I deem to be absolutely necessary in a novel for that novel to be considered "good".

Why in the world would I "appreciate" something that is an utter waste of paper? It's an insult to the memory of the trees that died to print that waste of a book to appreciate it.

You know how you said the Jonas brothers don't deserve the fame they get because they aren't good? That's how I feel about Twilight.

How are old fashioned vampires better than Twilight vampires?

They were real monsters, terrifying the countryside, and inflicting unwilling victims with their unholy curse. Twilight turned them into oversensitive teenagers with a skin condition. The action scenes in Twilight are awesome, I'll admit to that, but its the image that the rest of the film paints that ruins it, they stop being scary. They are shown as this sympathetic creature that can love and feel, The old vampires were unstoppable monsters who didn't care who they killed or turned and the only thing they had to fear was God himself, (garlic notwithstanding). Vampirism was a curse, not a gift you gave your girlfriend. I'd really like to see a movie blend both elements to make it perfect, hopefully they can make one that makes everyone happy.

Is it OK for christians to read vampire novels such as Twilight?

I'm not a christian but I am a bookseller and I noticed this one come in:

It might give you better answers than you'll find here :)

An excerpt:

Stephenie Meyer's series has become a huge cult hit. The first film, "Twilight", was released November 2008; the second, "New Moon", will be released November 2009, with two more to follow. The level of interest has been compared to the "Harry Potter" phenomenon. Dave Roberts considers the power of the novels and the appeal of the self-disciplined vampire Edward. He brings to bear a biblical lens, showing that while there are important moral and spiritual lessons to be learned, there is also a naive promotion of vampire mythology and the cult of beauty. The central point of the book is to help teens (and their parents) discern what is good from what is unhealthy, helping to create robust, biblically literate young adults.

Would This Be Too Much Like Twilight.......?

I don't think it's too much like Twilight. It's an interesting story idea. The whole vampire thing seems to be in fashion right now, or something like that. So people might think Vampires=Twilight, but the story is nothing like Twilight, which is good because it's original.

Make sure you keep to your own version of a vampire, and don't copy anything else. I think you should start writing it -- it could be a really good story. As long as nothing is too easy (for example, the sisters have a really hard time deciding if they should help their other sister, and only decide to help her because it's for their own good, or something like that, and it can't be too easy for the sisters to rescue their last sister). So, I hope this helps!

Why so many people didn't like twilight?

FI thought the writing was barely mediocre. It seemed to be a bland yet fairly abusive romance story/triangle with supernatural elements shoe-horned in and yet it had all the horror elements of vampires and werewolves (and what have you) smoothed over completely to the point of absurdity but somehow left all their Reality HAX supa powaah. This made the characters' "true natures" replacable with pretty much any supernatural creature, to me. The female protagonist was the most blatant self-insert wish fulfillment character I had seen in print in quite a while (until 50 shades)

That said, despite my personal revulsion with the abusive relationship aspect that seems to dominate the series, I tend to be at least slightly pleased with anything that gets teens reading more. (I encourage parents to always be HIGHLY aware of what their impressionable teens/tweens are reading.)

If you liked it, good for you. I hope it has opened the door for you (and others) to find new genres and authors to explore.
