Whats a good way to start a summary?

I'm glad you asked. 1) While you read - you should be maintaining an outline of the facts on each chapter. 2) Make note of characters, characterization (little tidbits the author reveals, and the ones you find as you read) 3) Construct a story map and note how the story moves from the exposition-to the rising action-climax-falling action and then resolution. 4) Note what your thoughts are about each character, and how they relate. After your review your outline, go back and read it. Now you should be able to draw an intro statement based on a number of things you have discovered about the storyline, characters, plot, theme, etc. One or two items should stick out. For example- if the protagonist (main character) is driving the story, then trace how he/she does that and how they effect the outcome. A good summary to me is the student who evaluates many sides of the story from different perspectives. Make it brief, you don't want to reveal "all of the good stuff", but as the reader and writer - your outline should have more information so that if you need to return and do more essay writing, you have the facts with you. Good luck to you. I love questions like these. It challenges me as an English teacher. You are welcome to email me directly if you have any further questions.

Writing an article on health?

I think that is part of the problem right now. No one really knows what the government is going to do at this point in time. Lets analyze a few problems with our current health care system. 1. Our system is fairly inefficient. Communication between different specialists, doctors, and pharmacists could be improved. How many times have you heard of someone being prescribed the wrong drug, too much of a drug, given the wrong treatment, given two identical tests, or given the wrong surgical procedure. Yes, mistakes happen, but I think they happen more often than they should. 2. Our system has a large number of uninsured. These people can't afford insurance and thus cannot afford large medical bills when they incur them. If I don't have insurance and I have a massive heart attack, there is no way I could pay the bill. This causes me to declare bankruptcy and the hospital takes the loss. The hospital, needing to break-even, raises prices on everyone else. The uninsured cost each one of us money through more expensive health care and higher insurance rates. 3. We do not have a system based solely on consumer choice. Most people have health care that is tied to employment. This means they have either no choice or very limited choices in coverage options and prices. This means that there really is no direct competition between insurance companies. If I was writing the health care reform act, here is what I would do. 1. Require electronic medical records: This increases the speed, accuracy, and efficiency of communication of medical information. 2. Eliminate employer-sponsored health care. Remove health insurance as a benefit of employment. 3. Provide individuals with a tax credit based on their income to buy health care on their own. If you can prove that you bought health care this year, the government cuts you a check for x dollars to defray the cost of health care. The government does not really care which plan you choose, just that you have chosen a plan. (already done with both VA care and Medicaid) 4. Provide a "public-option". This would be a company set up by the government to sell health insurance. This would be the government's way of controlling cost and providing competition in the industry.

“A "stand-alone" summary is a summary produced to show a teacher that you have read and understood something. It is common in many 100 and 200 level classes to get assignments that ask you to read a certain number of articles and summarize them. This is also a very common type of writing assignment in graduate school. How to produce a summary:1.Read the article to be summarized and be sure you understand it.2.Outline the article. Note the major points.3.Write a first draft of the summary without looking at the article. Read this article.4.Always use paraphrase when writing a summary. If you do copy a phrase from the original be sure it is a very important phrase that is necessary and cannot be paraphrased. In this case put "quotation marks" around the phrase.5.Target your first draft for approximately 1/4 the length of the original. The features of a summary:1.Start your summary with a clear identification of the type of work, title, author, and main point in the present tense.Example: In the feature article "Four Kinds of Reading," the author, Donald Hall, explains his opinion about different types of reading.2.Check with your outline and your original to make sure you have covered the important points.3.Never put any of your own ideas, opinions, or interpretations into the summary. This means you have to be very careful of your word choice.4. Write using "summarizing language." Periodically remind your reader that this is a summary by using phrases such as the article claims, the author suggests, etc.4.Write a complete bibliographic citation at the beginning of your summary. A complete bibliographic citation includes as a minimum, the title of the work, the author, the source. Use APA format.”Source: How to Write a Summary

Write ups that invoke nostalgia are best for college / school magazines. The experiences that students have in college are more or less the same for everyone. From the common hangout spot to the most dreaded professor, all these things are pretty much the same for all students. Although, writing about a professor as being dreaded would be inappropriate for a college magazine but a common hangout spot and experiences that you had there would be like lauding your college and since you share the same sense of pride of being part of it with other college students, such an article would enamor all your readers.Besides this your experiences could share a moral lesson for life that your college taught you.Or your first day of college, from how you began from loathing it to swooning over it. When we enter college, its like a dream. As we take the first step to our journey, its like you have entered the land to ecstacy. All that you have ever heard about college life is going to come true. The tiring school days are over and its a new phase, the best phase of life.Fast forward to a few days and the bubble has been broken by incessant schedules and nearing exams. Any ways that the above are being faced?

Any new staff members? Or any staffer who has been there a long time?

What do you think about this "article"?? Piss anybody else off?

I actually think that article was well-written--don't call it stupid. It's just that it had an "extremist" point of view. It was harsher than it needed to be (but it's still a well-written essay with loads of literary devices).

It does seem racist, and I do think you friend was overly emotional. I don't think he's white. And if he's black, you've got to try to understand where he's coming from. Writing the essay was a means of self-expression (and it really is harmless--- it's not like he's murdering white Republicans).

I don't agree with your friend's message in any way. I'm not really sure about how "they lost" and what "they lost" and I do think your friend should approach the topic of this essay with some respect and courtesy to Republicans and white people in general. Most of what he said was really opinionated.
