I want to play a tabletop RPG with my friends. I'm an absolute beginner. What do I need to buy to start?If your friends are already into RPGs, you won’t need much to join. Start with a pencil, maybe some dice. Then you can get the rest piecemeal, and they will happily teach you how to do it.If you and your friends are all beginners, I would recommend one of the starter boxes out there. In my opinion, and from the ones I have tried, the best are Pathfinder Beginner Box, the boxed edition of Doctor Who: Adventures in Time and Space, or one of Fantasy Flight Games’ Star Wars Roleplaying-boxes, Edge of the Empire, Age of Rebellion, Force and Destiny, or The Force Awakens; I would recommend anyone of the first three of these.All of these has what is necessary to get started (except for the pencil) – dice, tokens, maps, instructions, the lots – and for a reasonable price. They have very clear instructions for how to begin, what it’s about, how to do things etc. And they start off assuming you’re a newcomer, which is important. There’s a beginner’s box for Dungeons&Dragons 5, but it’s more of a transition set from earlier D&D or Pathfinder to the new edition, rather than a beginner’s box (I think it’s by accident or by laziness). But the ones I list above are aimed at and designed for a complete newcomer.My suggestion is to start with one of those, and take it from there. If you’re hooked, get the rest later.

It would be helpful if you were more specific, what type of online games FPS, RPG, etc..? As someone has mentioned Team Fortress 2 is a great and extremely fun online FPS to play. Another free to play FPS is Alliance of Valiant Arms, however I haven't played that one. If you're after RPG's I've heard a lot about Global Agenda as well as other games such as World of Tanks, Forsaken World, Champions Online.

It's a Blizzard game, though, and I tend to dislike that company (for reasons other than strictly content). It's a fantastic single player puzzle game, but Portal 2 has a pretty great co-op mode as well. It's not much for content, but there's something fun about impaling your friend with a javelin that doesn't get old.There's a game called overgrowth that features rabbits fighting to the death. Also the world chat IMHO play the big role of that game community. You get to know other players and talk to everyone.Also the gane is highly addictive and challenging once you figured out how to play.
