Conceptually think of a circular pizza with eight slices.

When you first take 1/4 of that pizza you end up with 2 slices. When you next take 1/2 of the 2 slices, you end up with one slice. That is 1/8 of th original pizza. That is 1/8 = 1/2 of 1/4 of the pizza.

When you first take 1/2 of that pizza you end up with 4 slices. When you next take 1/4 of the 4 slices you again end up with one slice. That again is 1/8 of
the pizza. That is 1/8 = 1/4 of 1/2 of the pizza.

Notice that 1 slice left from 8 means that we have multiplied 8 by 1/8 whether we used 1/2 then 1/4 or 1/4 then 1/2. So 1/4 then 1/2 is 1/8 and 1/2 then 1/4 is 1/8.

So, in this pizza example, you should be able to see why "of" in English means "multiplied by" or, if you prefer, "times" in mathematics.

The key here is to realize 1/4 of 1/2 means (1/4) times (1/2) and 1/2 of 1/4 means 1/2 times 1/4. Basically "of" always means "times". The (1/4) and (1/2) are from your problem, but this is true for any two numbers of which the first is a fraction. 1/2 of 4 = 2 = (1/2)*4

1) 1/4 of 1/2 = 1/4 times 1/2 = 1/8

2) 1/2 of 1/4 = 1/2 times 1/4 = 1/8

In multiplication the order of the two fractions, or a fraction and then another number, simply does not matter! Multiplication is order-independent (or commutative if you have been introduced to that concept).

What is greater 8/15 or 1/2?

Must multiply the 8 * 2 = 16 and have to put that answer on the Left

Then multiply the 1 * 15 = 15 and have to put that answer on the Right

16 ? 15

NOW 16 is > 15. So put the > in place of the ? on the first line

Okay there are many different approaches to that question.
Logical way: is a quarter greater than a half? Obviously Nope so 1/4<1/2
Mathematical way:
Convert the second one to the same denominator as the first one by multiplying 2 up and down.
1/2 = 2/4
Is 1/4 greater than 2/4. Obviously No. 1/4<1/2

You could convert each one to decimal form.
Is 0.25 greater than 0.5?

REASON AND PROOF:
* subtract each number by a number already given, we get,
proof 1:
subtract with a number that u think is the smallest(say, 0.1)
1.2 - 1.1 ; 1.23 - 1.1 ; 1.1 - 1.1
so, we are left with,
0.1 ; 0.12 ; 0
this tells that,
1.1 was the smallest value as you obtain 0 on subtracting with itself and u get a positive quantity for other arguments.
Now, you must compare 0.1 and 0.12...
by subtracting 0.1, we get,
0.1 - 0.1 ; 0.12 - 0.1
or,
0 ; 0.02
here, 0.1 is smaller than 0.12.
Now, as we have said that 0.1 is smallest and 0.1 is smaller than 0.12, we get,
1.23>1.2>1.1

logic: a-b will yield a positive answer if a>b, and, the same will yield a negative answer if b>a

proof 2:
now, subtract all numbers from a number already given and that which u think is the greatest...
the logic here is, if it is the greatest number, the answer which u get must be -ve... and subtracting by itself will give 0
so,
try subtracting by 1.2... we get
0 ; 0.03 ; -1
This indicates, 1.2>1.1 ... but is lesse than 1.23.
if u try doing the same from 1.23,
we get,
-0.03 ; 0 ; -0.13

thus, 1.23 is the greatest.

Is 1/2 greater then 1/6?

Of course. See 1/2 supposedly is a half (one out of two things). Suppose the whole is 1. 1/2 would be 0.5. 1/6 (one out of six things) would be 0.16666666666666666666666666666667.

Also think: A pie is cut in half and one half is given to you.
A similar sized pie is cut into sixths (six pieces) and one slice is given to you (1/6 of the
pie)

Normally, when we say an ‘obeject’ in a ‘category’ is greater then another ‘object’, we assume an well defined order in that category. In this case, we have a category called the integer, e.g. numbers like -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3 and that are our objects. The order is a bit strange in sense that you know the order iff you know the order, e.g. you can not tell which is the greater one between 7 and 9, unless you know 9 is greater. (Though you may say coz 9–7=2>0, thus 9 is greater. But in my opinion, if you don’t know 9 is greater, it’s seldom you know 9–7=2>0. )But at now, we assume you can count numbers. Then when you list all the positive integers, those appears later is greater then those appears earlier, e.g. you count 1,2,3,4,5, and thus 5>3>1.Now we get 0. 0, in a intuitive way, is in the middle of integers. (I don’t know whether the middle place is defined.) It means when you have finite many integers, you can always transform them and make the 0 close to the middle place by adding or deducting an integer. Or if A is an integer, if you list all the integers between -A and A, 0 is exactly in the middle place. Recall that the number appears later is greater then those appears earlier. Thus 0 is greater then half of the integer between -A and A.Then what is those smaller (than 0) ones? They are the negative integers, e.g. the numbers with a - sign. And they appears in the reverse order as the positive integer. That is, we have 1,2,3,4,5 then we have -5,-4,-3,-2,-1. And their order is still the counting order. And 0 appears right after -1. Thus when you count 1,2,3, you will have -3,-2,-1, and then 0 appears after -1, which means 0 appears after -3.Thus -3<0.
