What's the difference between the meanings of "cute" and "kawaii"?

I'm an offender to this, I make clay charms and on some of them described them as kawaii.
A friend told me that "kawaii" is the equivalent to "cute" in english.
When I think of cute I think puppies, babies, and baby animals but when I
think of kawaii I think of super cute things like chubby animals, cute accessories, and big twinkly eyes. I guess it's because of the images I have seen and the culture difference? For example I have not been lucky enough to travel to the country itself so the closest I can get is through the internet, I see images of some items like cars, phone cases, or clothes brightly colored with cute qualities. Things that I don't usually see here in the U.S.

I see this the same case as with "fiesta" and "party" I'm fluent is spanish, so I know fiesta is just party in spanish. But I see that it's used as if they are different, a party is a normal party gathering but if you're having a fiesta it's like a super party complete with pinatas, tequila, and tacos! Lol

It doesn't make sense at all but it's just the way some people think lol I don't think the word is used with the intention of insulting, more like admiration ( well that's the reason why I do it) love the culture so I try to learn more about it and seeing the word reminds me of something that I like from the culture.
Also, I have an etsy shop and I can see what searched words bring in more views to my shop. I see that "kawaii" is one of the most popular searched words, just a little fun fact lol

Hopefully this kind of sort of explains why some people use this word =)

What are some things you have done or would like to do if you visited Hawaii?

I have visited Hawaii, I have gone to Kawaii, and Oahu. (Such beautiful places by the way) I have gone swimming with sharks, snorkeling with sea turtles and fish. I have gone on many, many hikes (Which came with breathtaking views). Going to many different plantations, (Dole plantation, a coffee plantation, etc. etc.) Little boat rides to random places in the ocean, seeing a couple whales, and spotting out dolphins.I loved the smell of the rain fresh early in the morning, and falling asleep to the waves crashing against the shore. I would have liked to see more of Pearl Harbor (I got to go in and see bits and pieces of it). I would have also liked to walked around the cities a bit more. But that is quite alright.I would suggest going to different antique shops, and just sitting on the beach, playing in the sand. Hawaii is really such a beautiful, mysterious place…

What is a Kawaii or what are Kawaiis?

it means cute, usually an Asian thing. I personally like their stuff, everything is so bright and pretty. Like my avatar picture for example, it's kawaii.

What does "Kawaii" mean?

The full Japanese spelling, including kanji (Chinese characters), for kawaii is 可愛い.  You'll only rarely see it written this way- it's much more common to use only kana (かわいい) because 愛 ("love") is only rarely read anything other than ai (あい).  可 is often used as a prefix for Japanese words that are translated with the suffix "-able" in English. So when the dust settles, kawaii is often translated as "cute," but in reality "lovable" or "adorable" is closer to the mark.  When a J 6-year-old ties a pink ribbon in her hair and asks for an opinion, the situationally appropriate word is "Kawaii." When J parents want to tell their own children of the overwhelming love in their (the parents') hearts, the culturally appropriate word is "Kawaii."  I once reduced a misbehaving student to a pout when I told him "Kawaiku nai." ("You're not kawaii.")
