Whats Your Favourite Disney Film

What is your favorite animated Disney film and why?

Pinocchio and Tarzan are the movies that came to my mind. When I watched Pinocchio, I had only just started learning English, so most of it I don’t really understand, but I happen to read the illustrated kid’s book, it was one of my first English book, so I kind of understood what was going on. Also, just years later I watched A.I, I was preteen then, and had begin to understand movies in English, I guess it was the first film that ever really resonated in me, and it had the Pinocchio reference. Thus, watching A.I allows me to understand Pinocchio in a different depth. I’m not sure if it’s my favourite movie, but with all that being said, I guess I have somewhat of a special affinity towards Pinocchio. However, Tarzan was the movie that I’ve watched over and over. I even have the soundtrack CD and I listened to it over and over too. By the time then, I was somewhat familiar with the story too, but what really resonates with me is the kind of freedom and adventure the character has. Even later when I was in my teen, I still enjoy watching them. Perhaps if I watch it now, I’d still enjoy it as well.So if I have to pick one, I guess I’ll have to say that Tarzan is my favourite.

What is your favorite Disney song and why?

Like everyone else, this is in no particular order:“Poor Unfortunate Souls” –Ursula in The Little MermaidDefinitely not my favorite movie, but Ursula is awesome.“Be Prepared” –Scar and the hyenas in The Lion KingJeremy Irons is one of my very few gay crushes.“Gaston” –Gaston, LeFou, and villagers in Beauty and the BeastIt’s just so over the top that it perfectly explains Gaston.“Hellfire” –Judge Frollo in The Hunchback of Notre DameThe best villain is one you loathe and pity at the same time.“I Won’t Say I’m In Love” –Meg in HerculesHow many people don’t relate to this? Also, the muses are awesome.“I’ll Make a Man Out of You” –Li Shang in Mulan“Cruella De Vil” –Roger in 101 DalmationsI was a horrible violin student. I hated practicing. Except for this song. And it’s hard to play on a violin.“Frozen Heart” –Ice cutters in FrozenI really like work songs, and I love the Dorian mode.“Vuelie” –Cantus in FrozenI like yoiking. What else is there to say?“Let It Go” –Elsa in FrozenOverdone? Yes. Fantastically written and performed? Also yes. There is a very good reason they rewrote the movie just for this song.“Winnie the Pooh” –the orignal Winnie the Pooh moviesI grew up on these. I learned to speak late, and didn’t even really do signs like most pre-verbal kids, but the one I did use was lightly touching my palm to my nose, representing the butterfly landing on Pooh’s, to say that I wanted to watch Pooh.“A Whole New World” –Jasmine and Aladdin in AladdinI’m fairly sure that it was Aladdin that tought me that romance was a thing back when I was… five, I think?“What’s This?” –Jack in The Nightmare Before ChristmasPeople forget this is Disney, but it’s one of their most creative and gorgeous movies.“Not in Nottingham” –Alan-a-Dale in Robin HoodDefinitely my favorite of the older movies, and a gem mine of songs. One of my favorite groups, Los Lobos, has a version too. It’s fantastic translated into Tejano. There are more I really like, but this list is already long enough.

What's your favourite underrated Disney movie?

The Great Mouse Detective. This is the movie that convinced Walt Disney Animation Studios to continue producing animated films following the underperformance of The Black Cauldron (another underrated Disney which I will review some other time), and it is quite fantastic.Playfully poking fun at Sherlock Holmes, yet still managing to honor its inspiration, the Basil of Baker Street children's novels, which are in turn inspired by Holmes, it nonetheless churns out a rather ingenious and engaging original mystery after the traditional Disney fashion of remaking classics. Basil is of course a genius, making all the astounding intuitive leaps and logical deductions you might expect, but it is far more endearing to see how unprepared Basil is to relate to the young Olivia Flaversham, and very entertaining to watch him try to assert himself only to melt at her predicament (having her father kidnapped).I had nearly written off Dr. Dawson as another bumbling sidekick until the scene where he and a depressed Basil are trapped and Dawson is forced to snap the detective back to his senses in order to save them. It becomes clear in this instant that he is Basil's mainstay when things go south, and the one most likely to keep a level head in times of crisis. And then there is Professor Ratigan, deliciously brought to life by the wily charms of Vincent Price. This is a villain who fully embraces his sinister side, and whose desire to rule all mousedom is superseded only by his longing to see Basil bested by his superior genius at last. The plot is fairly straightforward, but includes some surprising twists, such as Ratigan feeding his henchman who calls him a rat to his pet cat Felicia, or Basil's experiment to locate Ratigan's hideout. And the visuals are stylishly dark: a first and so far sole picture to take place only at night.

What is your favorite Disney movie and why?

Lilo and Stitch. It’s not your typical kind of Disney movie. Lilo and Nani are not “princesses.” (I hate all of the princess shit Disney had been promoting for the past 40 years. I don’t see how winning a birth lottery is something girls should aspire to.) They’re minorities, they come from an underprivileged family. Nani’s struggle with supporting the family while taking care of her little sister feels authentic. And the family, which indeed gets better at the end of the movie, doesn’t become super rich. The girls don’t discover some ridiculous treasure or uncover long lost famous/rich parents who solve all their problems. It’s still a broken family of two sisters trying to make a life for themselves. It’s about family and friendship and the movie didn’t make romance or “true love” the theme of the movie. Nani had a boyfriend, but their relationship was never the focus of the movie. There’s no Prince Charming or dashing rogue coming to rescue. And considering it came out back in 2002, it’s pretty refreshing. We have to wait for another 15 years for a minority girl featured in a Disney movie who didn’t end up with some Prince Charming. On top of all that, the movie was gorgeous. It is the last watercolor animation feature film Disney made. The Hawaiian environment is beautifully rendered, with a full panel of watercolor background. They don’t make movies like that anymore. After all, Disney has focused on their 3D Pixar production.
