When And How Should I Let My Small Kitten Outside

Can kittens live outside and if so when?

To allow a cat of any size to live outside puts alot at risk.

Feline leukemia is a common fatal illness amongst cats, especially those who are allowed outside contact with other cats who may never have had vet care of any form much less the basics.

But first and foremost to allow a cat of any size to roam, subjects them to untold numbers of risk.
The first of which is illness, attacks from dogs and other cats, plus they are major prey for coyotes(which believe it or not DO indeed frequent residential areas), along with hourly risk frequenting areas they may not be familiar with such as traffic and mischevious children not to mention plain out mean humans.

They generally mean no harm to anyone for they are doing what nature teaches them for they do help hold down the bird and mice population.

Personally feel they are not creatures intended to be left to fend for themselves.

It is ok to have your kitten sleep outside?

OK here goes, I put my cat outside about a year ago when he was about 10-12 weeks. I got him neutered shortly there after. He is a terrific cat!!! He kills shrew and mice that would otherwise come into our home(in the country), I've watched him wait for cars to pass before crossing the road but for the most part he stays on our property. He is scared to death of vehicles and if he hears one he won't go near the road. We have opossoms and racoons that come onto our portch if we leave his food out at night and he just sits there and watches them eat! He is fully vaccinated. So, we no longer have mice in the house (we did before he came along), we don't leave food out at night, he gets along with the wild creatures including the deer that visit our yard. The biggest problem we have is he digs in my flower beds.

To those of you who think it's wrong...I say @&#* you. It depends on where you live and how well you take care of your cat! I hope you all have mice in the house!

When can I let my kitten outside?

You already asked this. WHY ask again? DO NOT LET YOUR CAT OUTSIDE. Plain and simple. There are WAY too many hazards. As a pet owner, you are suppose to care and protect your animal. You wouldnt let your dog run around lose. Why would you let your cat? There are cars, other cats, dogs, people. MANY dangers! Not only that, but males cats have a MUCH stronger urge then female cats do to wander away looking for territory

EDIT: I have had cats my whole life, as well. When I was younger, I had 5 cats that were outdoor cats. 2 got hit by cars. The neighbors dog got 1. And a coyote got 1. Only 1 died of old age.

If you've had outdoor cats your whole life, then why don't you know the answer to this question?

My cat had her kittens outside and she wont lead me to them what do i do?

well put a bell collar on her and a light yarn tied to it and let her get far far ahead of you and when she is a ways away start to folllow the yarn... you can find them that way...

put a can of tuna out and get out a laser light (3 bucks at walmart in cat toy section... shape of a mouse)... also put a can of moist cat food out too and keep an eye out the window she is probably caring and nursing for her kittens and will briefly come home so be quick to grab her and get the collar on and string (a whole roll of yarn so she can run a head and think she lost you...)

What should I do if my cat has her kittens outside?

The situation our cats are in is wonderful for them and us, but not for kittens. We have two cats: a 1 y/o male & a half-feral young molly who we found about 4 weeks ago. The female, Tawnie, wouldn't let us touch her for days, but finally warmed up a tad to our hands and the presence of food. Before long she was getting anxious being kept in a small cage in our garage so we let her out with our neutered male, Raven. Since then, our parents have refused to pay for a spay. Within the first week of being out she went into heat and attracted the whole neighborhood of cats. Anyways, about 3 weeks later (current day) her belly is bulging. She will let us pet her when she is comfortable, but runs at sudden movements or a noisy entrance into the garage, which is where she stays at night. Now that she is pregnant we are concerned about her choice of nest. She has two favorite spots to lounge in the garage, but occasionally misses the open garage and has to stay outside at night. You can see our dilemma. Not only will we not be able to assist on the young girl's first delivery (wouldn't want to scare her), we will not be able to know for sure where we is planning to give birth. Hopefully it will be in her bed or cave but another issue is if the garage gets closed on her the night she goes into labor. Also, we call our house the 'animal highway' because so many fox, raccoons, cats, etc. pass our house regularly, so obviously outside is not safe for kittens. So basically I'm asking this:

What do we do if she delivers outside?
Is there anything we can do to make sure she will give birth in the garage? Note: we can't install a cat door
How should we socialize her enough to humans for her to trust our presence during delivery?
Will our neutered tom be a problem or harm the kittens?
Should we make an inviting nesting area outside or will that only worsen our chances of a delivery inside?

If you can answer any of these that would be amazing. Thank you!

My cat had kittens outside, and we can't find them!?

Why did you let the mom outside if you knew she was going to have her babies soon?
Let the mom out and keep an eye from a distance to see if she leads you to them. If you do find them, don't handle them too much, or the mother may reject them. If possible move them inside along with the mom and do not let her out again. They need somewhere warm and dry.
After the mom is weaned from the kittens, get her spayed. We do not need any more cats or kittens in our already overpopulated world.

Good Luck.

I found a small kitten newborn kitten outside my door..?

It's a very small black and gold kitten. I found it outside my door when I was putting out the rubbish. It's smaller than my hand. I've never owned such a small kitten before. I've had dogs and cats before but never as newborns. I have no idea what to do with it but if it's healthy, I'd like to keep it. Any advice on what to do? I was thinking about taking it to the Vet but my sister has my car. He can open his eyes a little bit.

What do I feed him? Where will he sleep? What shots dows he need when he is so young? Is there any point in looking for siblings or it's mother?

Any help would be great and very much appreciated.

Can a 2 month old kitten stay outside?

I just got a kitten and my mom does NOT want him inside whatsoever :( I can only keep him in my back yard. He hasn't got his vaccines yet but I plan to get to them in a week. Would it be bad if I kept him outside. Its not really cold where I live.

My cat had kittens outside should i bring them in?

hmm.. I agree it's best to have them inside.. Our cat just had a litter on Mother's Day, and we were able to handle them right away.. If the mother cat is friendly to you I think (but I'm not sure) you should be able to touch them long enough to bring them in and put them on a soft blanket in a box or something.. Keep reassuring the mama and talking sweetly to her petting her.. She probably will understand you are trying to help.. Then again I don't want to tell you to do something without knowing for sure, so I would call your local vet.. Our local vet's # is 1-(330)-684-2426 - it will give you an emergency phone number to our vet, Dr. Gerber. Tell him Rhea Porter gave you the number - and realize it's like 2 in the morning where he is so apologize for the late call lol..
