When I Get Sooo Angry I See Black And White Spots. Am I Stressed

What causes the phenomenon "seeing red," when a person is angry?

Do some people literally "see red" when they're angry?

One thing that occurred to me was that if some people literally see red when they're angry, there may be some basic physiological reason for that. If so, it may be a cross-cultural phenomenon, and we might see traces of the red-anger association in other languages.

Of course, it may be that if some people literally see red when they're angry, that association is culturally derived. Then the lack of cross-cultural corroboration is irrelevant.

Is it possible that there's a (more) physiological rather than psychological explanation for this phenomenon?

I've just finished a biopsychology class where we learned a bit about vision. Before light reaches the photoreceptors on the retina, it passes through overlying blood vessels. We don't see them because the receptor cells habituate to them and are used to receiving less light (and perhaps a longer wavelength?). However, if you hold a light up to the side of your eyes, apparently you can see them. (I'm still planning to find a flashlight and try it out.)

Anyway, my thought is this: what if the changes the body undergoes during extreme rage or anger cause the blood vessels in the eyes to swell, and the receptor cells to respond to this by detecting red? In support of this, the sympathetic nervous system is thought to respond in fight/flight situations by signaling the heart to pump faster, among other things. So it is, as far as I'm aware, probable that the blood vessels in the eyes would be affected.

I suppose using equipment more readily available in a hospital; one could measure changes in the eye's blood vessels, and correlated this with phenomenal accounts of seeing red, (even in cases that did not involve rage). I think this would serve as good evidence that some people really do see red when they're angry.

There's another explanation:
According to the book 'Rage: A Step-by-step Guide to Overcoming Explosive Anger', "Some people literally "see red" when triggered by extreme anger because the rush of blood being pumped is far too quickly and powerfully expands the capillaries in their eyes."

So in conclusion- I do think the myth of literally "seeing red" when angry is true.

Why do I sometimes feel dizzy when I am angry?

“Head rush,” sudden increased heart rate / blood pressure / dilation of blood vessels, you may have a “weak” (or defective) heart. No pun intended. Obviously for starters let's not allow y/ourself to get angry (or “excited" again) but you need to speak with a Medical Professional (probably a cardiologist) about this ASAP!

What does it mean when my baby pet iguana gets black spots on its head?

when i got this iguana from my dads friend he was bright and healthy. then i put him in a ten gallon tank with lots of vegies and feeding it that and carrots, and also water. i also let it out for excercise. his head turned black.

What does it mean when your cat stands in one spot and it wags its tail from side to side?

The general scientific opinion is that cats do this when they are emotionally stressed, usually on a decision. Namely, if a cat is mad at Mom or Dad, he or she is torn between being mad/attacking and "But that's Mom! And she can get me!" It's like the balancing movement that a cat uses to walk in high places helps when the cat is walking an emotional high wire as well.

Of course, most of the time this will be when they are angry. I see my cats do it when they are angry at the kitten. "Attack? Laze? Attack? Laze? Damned kitten"

And cats don't wag their tails, they fwip them. *grin*

My vision went white, like it was over exposed. What could have happened?

You had what is called a “vaso-vagal response”. It can lead to syncope (fainting) but doesn’t have to.“Episodes of vasovagal response are typically recurrent and usually occur when the predisposed person is exposed to a specific trigger. Prior to losing consciousness, the individual frequently experiences early signs or symptoms such as lightheadedness, nausea, the feeling of being extremely hot or cold (accompanied by sweating), ringing in the ears (tinnitus), an uncomfortable feeling in the heart, fuzzy thoughts, confusion, a slight inability to speak/form words (sometimes combined with mild stuttering), weakness and visual disturbances such as lights seeming too bright, fuzzy or tunnel vision, black cloud-like spots in vision, and a feeling of nervousness can occur as well. The symptoms last for a few seconds before the loss of consciousness (if it is lost), which typically happens when the person is sitting up or standing.” Vasovagal responseRead the article above. It will explain it pretty well.

Why do black folks back into parking spaces?

I think I already mentioned this, but saying "lots of people do that" is not an answer. I already said that plenty of people do this. The deal is that the percentage of black folks that do it is much higher than others. The fact that I have asked some people in the black community who have said they feel pressured to do it, but aren't sure why seems to indicate there is some kind of reason. I'm sure it is something passed down from the past and am just curious what it is. Remember that I do live in Atlanta, so it's possible this is more of a southern thing (although I grew up in the south and did not notice it until I moved here).

And for you 5-year olds out there, no, I am not racist and this really is a serious question. I'm not sure why anyone saying "why does group X do this differently?" is suddenly a racist. Grow up.

I figured this would be something I'd google for or ask a couple of people and figure out in 10 minutes, but it has been incredibly difficult to track down.

My white boyfriend is intimitaded by black men?

This sounds like something you will have to talk to him about. If he is letting his own irrational thinking stop you from meeting with friends, then you should consider cutting him off. He needs to grow a pair and get over it. He probably just makes assumptions about black guys but is fine with black girls and hence is with you, or he considers you to be the only exception. Either way, there isn't much point in being with him if he keeps it up.

EDIT- You might need to give him an ultimatum. He either opens up to you about this or it won't work out. There is no way you can stay with him when he disrespects people of your own race like that.

Edit-Then it is only going to get worse the longer you stay with him. Rain is right that this is about jealousy as well as his own insecurities, but he shouldn't need to act aggressive towards you for calling him out. That's not what a good boyfriend would do.
