When I Re-wire A Lanp How Do I Know Which Wire Is Hot

My house wiring is red, black and white+green (ground), the fans wiring is blue, black and white+green (ground) How should this be wired?

If you are writing from North America both Red and Black are used as hot. That is 120v each, between the two is 240v. The White is always Neutral, and Green or Bare is Ground. Do Not connect both Red and Black unless you know the Fan is wired for 240v. If you do, you will probably fry it. Wiring is Green (Ground) to fan case (the Green in the fan will have a screw connecting the wire to the frame), The White to White (Neutral) and either Red OR Black (depending which is connected to the wall switch). If neither is switched the fan MUST have it’s own internal switching (pull cords or remote). The Blue fan wire is to be connected to a switch either for lights or speed control. There should be an instruction sheet and if not, Google the Make and Model number and download the diagrams found on line.If this is NOT North America I doubt that the color codes you have given are correct, but these instructions are not valid for that wiring system.

How do I rewire an old fluorescent desk lamp?

I have an antique fluorescent desk lamp. I bought it as a kind of "basket case" because someone had yanked the power cord out of it and it pulled a lot of the wiring apart inside. I want to put new wires in and start using it.

It has just 2 wire colors, white and black. It has a ballast with just 2 wires (both black). The lamp holds a regular 2-pin (at each end) straight tube.

The switch to turn on and off has 4 wires coming out, one black and one white on each side.

Any clues? I think I know how to do this but I want to make sure.

How do I determine which wire is "hot" on a new fixture when both wires are the same color?

Use a voltmeter or even one of those led testers that have two probes and check the voltage between each wire and ground. The one with the voltage or that lights the bulb is hot. The other is neutral. There should be a bare wire that is ground. Be careful not to get them reversed. In a light socket the screw part is neutral and the center contact is hot. This is to protect you from touching the hot by mistake.

I am trying to rewire an antique lamp that has a nite light at the bottom and 3 way socket at the top.?

Your problem is that you need a special socket for this type of light. It is not a 3-way socket in the usual sense that you use a 3-way bulb in if. It is a 3-terminal socket which controls 2 different light bulbs, one in the base and one in the top. It goes through this sequence: bottom only on, top only on, both on, both off. The top socket does not use a 3-way bulb unless it is wired separately from the bottom and the bottom has its own switch.

Try your hardware store again and explain this to them or look on-line for a 3-terminal socket. Here is an example:

How to rewire a dual/two socket lamp?

If you can do one socket, you can do two. The second socket is in parallel with the first, so the hots of the two sockets are connected and neutrals of the two sockets are connected. If there are 2 separate switches, then the power sides of the two switches are connected, each switch goes to the hot of its socket, and the socket neutrals are connected to the power side neutral.

The main thing is having a polarized plug, and make sure the switch is in the hot side and the screw shell of the socket is connected to the neutral. The lamp will work with either of these wrong, but it is a safety hazard. This is true for all lamps, not just with two sockets.

The correct term for a socket is a lampholder. :-)

If you need more help, ask a more specific question.

What happens if you rewire a lamp incorrectly?

My handyman rewired 2 lamps for me.. and he told me it did not matter is you connect the neutral to the appropriate screw because the wattage was low, if he connected them incorrectly.. will it catch on fire?

they turn on, if that matters at all.

How do I wire this touch dimmer control into my lamp?

I'm working on a lamp with a touch dimmer (Westek model 6503). The touch dimmer has four wires: black, grey, brown, and yellow; the cord has a white and black wire. The instructions say to wire the yellow wire to the lamp body, but I'm confused from there. I can't tell which lamp/cord wire to attach to what. Can anyone point me in the right direction / tell me how to wire this?

How to wire a lamp with a night light?

If you are talking about a lamp with a built in night light: bring the wires to the switch. Run a set(2) wires to the main light and another set to the night light. Connect the 3 white wires together. connect the black wire coming into the light to the "common" terminal on the switch and connect the other 2 wires to the other 2 terminals. The night light usually comes on first. If it doesn't you can switch the two wires at the non-common terminals. Put lamp back together.
