According to Martin Gardner's book "The Last Recreations: Hydras, Eggs, and Other Mathematical Mystifications", the shortest known checkers game ends on white's 10th move (20 moves combined by both players) with all of black's pieces captured. This game was discovered by Malcolm Beckerson in 1978. It has not yet been proven to be the shortest (there may be other shorter games as yet undiscovered).
