How were the Azores first discovered?

There is some skepticism associated with this, as some theorists believe that knowledge of the Azores existed prior to their "official" discovery. Those claiming early discovery note tales of wandering sailors, shipwrecked monks and fishermen thrown off-course, discovering the islands, but then returning to continental Europe with stories of discovering distant islands in the Atlantic. An early story of the island of Faial talks of a hermit who was discovered by the early expeditions, and on the island of Corvo there is a story of Carthagian coins and equestrian statue, but little proof remains of these stories. Regardless of the stories of  Atlantis, the Fortunate Islands, Saint Brendan's Island, Brasil island, Antillia (or Sete Cidades, the island of the Seven Cities), Satanazes, the Ilhas Azuis (Blue Islands) and the Terra dos Bacalhaus (Land of Codfish), mysterious island began appearing on medieval maps. Whether due to curiosity or understanding of the reality, the prince Infante Henrique (Henry the Navigator) used monies from trade routes, conquest and his affiliation in the Order of Christ to begin a series of expeditions to find shorter trade routes. His initiatives would begin the Age of Discoveries. After 1420 Diogo de Silves and Gonçalo Velho Cabral  began exploring east and south of continental Portugal. Officially, on (or about) 15 August 1432, a ship landed (piloted by Silves and/or commanded by  Cabral) on the island of Santa Maria, named (supposedly) for being discovered on the Day of the Assumption of Mary. After some exploration, it is assumed, the mariners deposited domesticated animals (pigs, sheep and goats) on the islands and returned to the continent with their discovery.

Has anyone been to the Azore Islands off the coast of Portugal?

Yes I Have been there twice the Last time many years ago when I was in my teens. My father is Orginally from Fayal. I spent part of July and August there. Wonderful Place definetly go. It was like this unspoiled place that toursits had not discovered in great numbers. Beautiful scenery wonderful water turqoise in color I spotted dolphins while on a ferry to Sao Jorge I swam in the ocean everyday. The people are so friendly, I had people knocking on my door and start talking to me as if we were old friends. If you go and are in good shape a trek Hiking to the top of Pico especially on a clear day will allow wonderful views. In August on Fayal there is a Huge maritime festival called Semena de Mar (week of the Sea) which celebrates the main town Horta seafearing past with lots of food everyone from around the Island converges on this festival. Culminates in beautiful fireworks display at the end of the week. Festivals abound on all the Islands and Terceria has Bullfights. Overall wondeful experience! defiently go especially if you want a quiet laid back vacation. I have such fond memories, Im in college now planning to go back this summer when I study abroad in Spain.

What do people from The Azores Islands (Portugal) look like? Do they have the same ancestry/genetics as mainland Portuguese people?

People from the Azores look just like mainland Portuguese people for the simple fact that the Azores were completely uninhabited by the time the Portuguese got there. The Portuguese then started to bring people from mainland Portugal to inhabit the islands, and with time even French and Flemish settlers moved there, too.So yes, Azoreans mostly share their ancestry with mainland Portuguese because their own ancestors were mainland Portuguese. If you want more specific data on the matter, Wikipedia does offer a good explanation:As in continental Portugal, the most frequent mtDNA haplogroup in the Azores is H (45.2%), followed by U (16.7%), T(10.1%), K (6.5%), pre-HV clades (5.6%) and a smaller sub-Saharan L haplogroups frequency (3.4%) than in Madeira as the number of sub-Saharan slaves in the Açores never reached the proportions that took place in Madeira.[46]A multi generational inherited Y chromosomes of Asian or sub-Saharan origins may be held by European looking people as it does not show physical looks, but the origin of the patrilineage.[47]Inhabitants of the various islands have DNA of various origins.[48][49] So a minority on the islands has non European ancestry.[46]Source: Azores - Wikipedia

Why was America discovered so late?

That is not necessarily true, it is said Christopher Columbus discovered America first. Some evidences support Vikings discovered it way before Columbus I read that here http://www.history.com/news/the-...Some evidences also supports that Roman too discovered America that means it was discovered way before Vikings or Columbus. I don't have link to prove it I saw that on TV, they found Roman Sword in country that today is called Canada.
