When Were Nylons Invented?

Why were pantyhose invented?

We already had stockings that were essentially three pieces (two legs and a garter belt). The act of putting all of those pieces together as one unit, ie pantyhose, was a natural progression. They were actually invented in the 1940's I think, but really didn't catch on until much later.

When were pantyhose invented?

In the days of the wild frontier, women wore thick two-piece stockings. I'm sure that this is what they meant to portray on the TV show. The actresses may be wearing contemporary pantyhose or tights for ease of use, comfort, and cost. Authentic period two piece stockings are expensive, uncomfortable, and cast members will have to deal with hosiery styles (2 piece without Lycra/Nylon vs 1 piece with Lycra/Nylon) they are not used to. All the female characters wear long dresses, so I'm wondering what made you think they were pantyhose instead of stockings? Did the hosiery seem especially sheer?

They only way to confirm pantyhose instead of stockings is to see very high up on the thigh, and I have never seen anything like that on the Little House series. If the hosiery goes WAY past the middle of the thigh, they might be one piece pantyhose. If the hosiery stops part way up the thigh and a garter and/or bare skin show, then you know that you have two piece stockings and not pantyhose. If you can't see that high up the thigh, you really can't tell for sure.

I can't speak for the first season, but I remember an episode where the mother wants a new dress. The daughters save their pennies and buy mom some very nice fabric so that mom can have her wish. Out of gratitude and shame over her vanity, she uses the fabric to make new dresses for the daughters instead. In this episode, the hosiery covering the eldest 2 daughters and the mom was clearly visible from ankle to knee. The girls wore black hosiery with a thick weave that resembled socks. The mom's hosiery was a little nicer, but it still looked thick, and you would never mistake it for modern pantyhose or even modern (post 1950's) tights for that matter.

Who invented stockings?

Stockings have been worn since time immemorial. You must define what kind you mean, silk or nylon stockings for example.

Why is nylon used in the manufacture of parachutes?

Both of the previous answers are correct. I would add that this is not just nylon, like your clothes are made of, it is a rip-stop nylon.“Ripstop fabrics are woven fabrics, often made of nylon, using a special reinforcing technique that makes them resistant to tearing and ripping. During weaving, (thick) reinforcement threads are interwoven at regular intervals in a crosshatch pattern. The intervals are typically 5 to 8 millimeters (0.2 to 0.3 in). Thin and lightweight ripstop fabrics have a 3-dimensional structure due to the thicker threads being interwoven in thinner cloth. Older lightweight ripstop fabrics display the thicker interlocking thread patterns in the material quite prominently, but more modern weaving techniques make the ripstop threads less obvious. A similar effect can be achieved by weaving two or three fine yarns together at smaller intervals.Advantages of ripstop are the favourable strength-to-weight ratio and that small tears can not easily spread. Fibers used to make ripstop include cotton, silk, polyester, and polypropylene, with nylon content limited to the crosshatched threads that make it tear-resistant.”from Wikipedia

What is a nylon tyre?

In every tire, under the Rubber layer, there are many materials used to bind the structure. A nylon tire is that, where nylon threads are used. Usually the bead (thing which hold the tyre to the wheel) is made ofbunch of steel wires . nylon threads run from one bunch to other giving the shape to tyre.sidewall and tread portions are made of layers of nylon which is then covered with rubber. In all steel radial tyres, instead of nylon, steel wires are used.

What is the intention of inventing silk stockings?

If I remember my history of fashion corretly, there were silk stockings before there were nylons and believe it or not there were garter belts and garters holding up those nylons before along came panty hose.  I'm not aware that there is an intent for resurgence of silk stockings...but it is not an invention.

Difference between silk and nylon pantyhose?

Well first of all silk is a natural fibre whereas nylon is synthetic. Nylon is like the synthetic form for silk and is substitued in many things like pantyhoses. Silk is more expensive than nylon, due to longer production. Nylon is used in stockings more because it is less fragile but stronger than silk, and it is more commonly used in pantyhoses. I have not heard that much of many silk pantyhoses, but I bet it is softer-feeling, thinner and shinier, not slippery like nylon but more expensive. I hope this helps.
