HOW TO WRITE AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY

When writing an autobiography, you focus on three major things: who you are in life, what life means to you and what your outlook on the future is.

"Autobiographies have been written since A.D. 400 when an early Christian leader, Saint Augustine, wrote his." An autobiography is information about one's own life written by that one person. In it, it tells what that person's life is all about. When writing your own autobiography, use interesting facts to explain as much about yourself as you can.

The first thing you do when writing an autobiography is start off with a lot of facts about your life; for example, when and where you were born, where you live (city and state), where you go to school and who you live with. You have to give a lot of information so your reader can clearly understand what is going on. Once you have written this introduction, you are ready to start your first paragraph of the autobiography.

Who you are in life?

The best way to start an autobiography is to state your name. When you are writing this paragraph, you usually explain the type of person you are; use facts about yourself such as: have you won any awards? What types of awards have you won? Did you finish school? Do you plan on going to college?

What life means to you?

This is now your second paragraph. In this paragraph you should state how you see life--what does life mean to you. Are you happy or sad? Do you have a lot of friends or just a few? How do you make your school days go by? Do you have a boyfriend/girlfriend? What are your favorite places to go on dates? How long have you been dating? If you are involved in a relationship, do you think it will last forever?

What is your outlook on the future?

In this paragraph you should explain what you think the future will be like. Pick a year and explain how it will be but explain it through your eyes. Where will you be? How will you be living? Will you be married? Will there be any kids? Who will you be married to? What is he/she like? How long will you have been together?

Conclusion

The conclusion is the last paragraph of your autobiography and an important one, too. In the conclusion you usually try to re-word the introduction and add some type of closure to bring the whole autobiography together.

What tense should i use when writing an essay an autobiography?

Past. if he is dead, and you are talking about his life, it occured in the past.

i.e.
-insert name- /was/ a good leader.
-insert name- /is/ a good leader.

If you use present tense, it makes it sound as though the man is still alive and active, which he very well is not.

What are some tips for writing an autobiography?

As someone mentioned, you need to think about the purpose: who is your audience? Your family? A wider audience for a published book? In other words: Who will care about your story? Most autobiographies are not chronological from birth to death, unless the person writing it is a celebrity or their entire life is fascinating in some way. Many people choose to write around a theme: their family dysfunction while growing up (Running With Scissors); their struggle with addiction or illness (The Liar's Club; Girl, Interrupted); their inspirational travel or adventure experiences (Eat, Pray, Love; Wild) and so on. What was a major turning point for you in your life? What challenges did you overcome? What hope, advice, or inspiration do you hope people will draw from your story? If you hope to have readers outside your family and friends, it must be compelling in some way. It has to be something readers can relate to, or be entertained and inspired by. Read lots of memoirs/autobiographies to get a feel for what's been done, and how the writers made their particular story so compelling. Re-read your old journals or diaries, if you have them. What are the stories you tell your friends about your life? What are the stories they ask you to tell new people? ("Tell him about the time when you..."). These may be the seeds for your personal story.

What tone should I use when writing an autobiography?

A really interesting question. The short answer: you should write like you’re speaking to the reader. It should be conversational and sound like you. If it feels easy and natural to write it, it’ll feel easy and natural to read. But I think this question needs a little more exploring, which brings to me the long answer. Wondering what tone is appropriate for autobiography writing is the kind of question that can stop many of us from ever finishing our life story, which is a shame. It's so easy to get caught up in the detail of how to write well that it basically stops all progress. This is why we use question prompts at A Life Untold to help people easily write their autobiography without getting slowed down.Try writing down your answer to these questions:What advice would you give to your 18 year old self? What’s the most valuable thing your parents taught you?If you could share a meal with anyone in the world, who would it be and why?My guess is that you will be able to easily answer these questions and that you immediately adopt a particular tone that is natural to you without thinking about it. That's the nice thing about question prompts. When we design our customers’ books we leave them in "Q&A format" so readers feel like they're sitting down for a chat with the writer. That makes it both easy to write AND interesting to read. If you doubt me on this, just think about the way Quora works! It's all questions and answers. Q&A is where the magic happens.

Correct way to write an autobiography?

All paragraphs have to be indented and you should use multiple paragraphs, not one long narrative, for sure. I recommend using the the 5 paragraph essay format and write in first person ("I ". . . ):

Para. #1 - introduction para. which states topic and gives general background

Para. #2
#3
#4 - body paragraphs that describe, which are details, examples, explanations, events, etc.

Para. #5 - concluding para. which wraps up, summarizes, restates topic and concludes as author
sees fit

When writing a autobiography, do you use first person or third person?

I'm pretty sure you would use first person as you are talking about yourself.

When writing an autobiography, are there things the writer should avoid writing about to keep from being sued?

I assume you know that suing yourself is pretty much a waste of money, so let’s assume you’re talking about people you have met and know.In general, in the USA, Truth is a defense for libel. So, write the truth. Also, in general if the person you are writing about is a public figure, it is much more difficult for them to seek redress. If what you have written is demonstrably false, they usually need to show it was written with bad intention or “malice.” No mean feat, legally. If your book is published (as opposed to self-published) that opens up another world—that of indemnifying the publisher. Get an agent and/or lawyer to make sure that is clear in the contract.I write mostly humor. If your book is a humorous take on your life know that satire and parody are pretty much protected.I’m not a lawyer, these are generalities I’m pulling up from the back of my mind. I can’t be sure if some of these laws vary by state or have been modified, or my advice is flat out wrong.

When a person goes to write an autobiography, how do they remember with detail?

I am a novice, but still I will try to answer this with the understanding I have.  Autobiography is something where we narrate our own life to others. We all have our phases in life, and some might have a defining moment/incident/person that decides the course it takes and thus shapes a major part of their life. Generally, autobiographies are spun around this - how things helped it happen/ how the person is lead to it, and then how it helped things happen (how it helped achieve a dream, get success, how it helped the person stand amidst hardships, emerge courageous, how it made him strong willed and so on). So, when we rewind our past, keeping this in mind, every minute detail of our life would come back to memory. No defining moment you can think of?Life is like a drama where one scene follows another. We begin with childhood (school, petty fights, friendships), youth (passion, love, adventures), employment (realizations, mature decisions, foolish investments, past jobs, bosses), marriage and so on. We learn and unlearn things at every stage. All it requires is a peaceful brooding and every moment can be recollected and phrased in a wonderful way. DairiesWhat's more helpful than one's own record of life, a journal written over years? It will help in remembering the exact time and date of all the events of our life, which can be quoted in an autobiography. Other helpOne can always get help from dear ones (mother, father, spouse, siblings) to recollect minute details of past, like things we do not remember or are not sure of (the details from our childhood, the sleepwalk episodes etc) - whose words can be directly quoted.  Hope this answers your question.

What is the pros and cons of autobiography style writing?

Autobiography is not a style so much as a testament of authorship. It means it was written by the person it is about, and it is only about that one person. If you mean to ask what the pros and cons are of first person storytelling.

Pro:
The story is easier to relate to.

It allows characterization through internal observation. We learn about the character through his thoughts.

You can use a character's lack of knowledge to create suspense for the reader.

Cons:
Unless you are telling the story from the perspective of multiple characters (ala Game of Thrones)
The audience only gets to experience one narrative, the experiences of the main character.

If I write an autobiography, can I be sued for using real names?

That depends on your proof or evidence of what you claim about others, and what you say about them. You can be sued for slander. If you feel that you are in danger of being sued, contact a lawyer. I AM NOT A LAWYER.If you write about a famous person, and you don’t defame their character (like claiming to be a child, a rape victim, an abandoned spouse) that would probably be all right. If you wrote that you met say, Frank Zappa, at a jazz festival in Charlotte, N.C. in 1970, that is a factual experience that could be verified—at least that there was a jazz festival and Zappa performed. If you said you had a love child by him, his estate might not be happy with you.Family members may not be forgiving, but then, maybe you are the one who is in the position of forgiving. My real question is what the point of your autobiography might be, how it could enlighten or help a reader with some insights on some topic? Who the heck are you that I would want to know your life story? Why would you want to know my life story? If you have the story that needs to be told for your audience, state that you are changing the names, or refer to the person by the relationship: mother, friend, son-in-law, boss, etc. Talk to a lawyer, not a fiction writer. Thanks for A2A.
