I have done it several times traveling in SE Asia. They don't raise prices as the departure time approaches, and I've walked into an airport and asked for the next flight to xxx. (usually another city in the country I'm in, be it Thailand, Laos, or Malaysia, the countries where I've tried it.)A couple of caveats: If you are traveling internationally, it helps to have a passport from someplace like the US or some European countries, Canada, or Australia/New Zealand, and be flying to someplace that has a lot of tourism. Flying under those passports, many tourist destinations have a Visa upon arrival policy. Check before you buy! It's super easy in Thailand, where they have several competing budget airlines (Nok Air, Air Asia, and a couple more). I've hopped a plane from Chiang Mai to Bangkok, with just a few minutes notice (the flights go about hourly). I grabbed my bag, caught a cab to the airport, walked up to the ticket counter, and got a flight about 40 minutes before take-off. The best part? The ticket price was about $40 for a 360 mile (580 km) flight.
