hi, i have an old toshiba tecra 510cdt. i was going to reinstall windows on it because it had accumulated a lot of useless crap so i just wanted to clean install windows again. however, when i go to the BIOS, it doesnt list the optical drive as a boot option. it only lists the fdd, hdd, and secondary hdd. it doesnt even have an fdd..but it does have an optical cd drive. it just doesnt list it in the bios, like i said. any suggestions? thanks in advance.

Toshiba Satellite L745-S4310 "No bootable device"?

You may have a bad hard drive... Hello, I hope you have a back up of your data...How to reinstall a operating system with out a recovery disk. If you can't find the ones that you made or the ones that came with the computer. I assumed you already tried (and failed) to use the [ recovery partition.] this is the easy way... This means that the next step is to call tech support, and tell them that the recovery partition doesn't work, or you can't find the recovery discs you made... and then they can SELL you a set of recovery discs that you may have to copy to a usb drive.

That's just the way it works. There are two other ways use any other disk and when it is time to activate, call Microsoft on the phone with the activation window open and give them the coa or product code on the phone and they will activate and give you a number at that time.

You need the OEM installation specifically for the same version of the windows that came with your laptop. Otherwise, anything other than an OEM installation of that is the same kind that came with your laptop (Basic, Professional, etc) your product key won't work. Of course, if you choose to go that route, make sure you FIRST download all the drivers for your model laptop... else you might have trouble going on line afterwards to get the drivers.

This site you can down load windows files legally http://www.heidoc.net/joomla/technology-...
But then you have to burn iso file to a DVD or usb drive and it is not that easy to do. To get a good accurate answer give the brand, model number, installed operating system of the laptop when asking a question as all PC's are not the same. Hey, I enjoyed your question, I have worked as a technician most of my life, I hope I have helped you...

Laptop will not boot, stops at Toshiba boot screen and then an error screen?

I receive the following error message:

"For Atheros PCIE Ethernet Controller v2.2.7(11/02/10)

Check cable connection!
PXE-M0F: Exiting Intel PXE ROM.
No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key"

Before it first shut down, there was some blue screen with a message I was unable to read in time. I turned it back on and got the above message. I have done some research and it sounds like some kind of hard drive problem. I've checked the hard drive connection and it's fine, the same message appears. I also saw that you can access BIOS(not sure what this is exactly, I've never used it) and then somehow recover, reset or change a boot setting that may have changed by itself. I can't access it though. I have tried F8, I have tried pressing escape as soon as the red Toshiba screen comes on, and also tried holding it and releasing when the tone sounds, then pressing F1 but all I get is a tone and no screen.

It's about to be finals week and I really need some help getting this fixed... preferably without having to by a new hard drive because all kinds of homework, papers and study info is on this computer.

I just bought a new 1 TB Toshiba Basics External Hard disk. The hard disk is working fine; but I am not able to boot my system with my external hard disk connected. My system stucks up in the initial log screen if my Ex HDD connected. What is the solution for this?

While I agree with the other answers that the problem could be that your BIOS is set to boot to a USB device before the hard drive... however, this is not the default setting on systems one would purchase from the store... any store. The default settings of a BIOS are that the hard drive is the first device sought at boot in a system running Windows 8 and above.  Windows 7 systems typically have the hard drive as the default, but I've seen a few with the optical drive listed first as default.Have you tried connecting the external drive up to a different USB port?  Does the computer not want to boot if you leave a flash drive connected?  You can always go into your BIOS and check... but this wouldn't be the first time I'd seen the right combination of hardware cause the wrong effect.  There was an Asus board in 2009 that wouldn't boot if this one SanDisk flash drive was left in a port when the machine booted.  Any other USB drive was fine.  Just this one.

My Windows 7 starter on a Toshiba NB300 netbook cannot boot from a USB recovery flash drive. What could be wrong?

SOLVED,Why I Cannot Boot From An USB Drive (PC/Laptop) Reasons for this might be Bios settings is not properly set to boot from USBYour laptop's boot mode is UEFI, you need to change it to legacy.Your USB might be formated with NTFS parttition, sometimes that can cause some issues, just re-format it with FAT 32 file system.Let me know with any further issues!

How do you troubleshoot a Toshiba Satellite laptop that won't boot up?

Many things can cause a dead/non functional laptop. First decide if it’s worth it to fix it. You can always put the laptop’s hard drive in a USB external enclosure and get your data back, depending on whether the hard was the component to fail or not.First, remove the laptop’s main battery and try powering on again.Next, try a known working ac/power adapter/charger and try powering on again. If you are getting lights but your LCD/screen does not light up, then it’s either a bad LCD/screen or your video card is bad.Try replacing your CMOS/BIOS battery, I’ve seen this revive non functional laptops.Try a know good/charged laptop battery from another/identical laptop, this proves that the DC jack is bad. After that, your guess is as good as mine. It’s like trying to have my mechanic fix my car over the phone. You have to bring it in.
