When should I start reading piano sheet music?

When you want to expand your skills in playing the piano. But, in my opinion, reading sheet music should not be the highest priority when learning piano. It’s best to learn the fundamentals of piano playing and understand a bit about how music works before you delve into what it looks like on the page.Two reasons:Because there is a helluva lot to learn when you begin with piano anyway: learning about the keys, technique and music theory without also having to go and learn what everything looks like in notated form.Because it’s simply not necessary to learn songs when you can develop the skill of learning songs by ear. Developing this skill gives you a foundation of musical knowledge that you might not have the energy or will to absorb if you were also studying standard notation at the same time.Too much written work and not enough doing & playing is not a good approach. This is why I recommend my students learn about music and the mechanics of playing the piano before they learn to read sheet music!So how does one learn songs if they can’t read sheet music?They learn songs by ear. And this is just as valuable a skill as being able to read sheet music and in my opinion, even more so. This is because in order to gain the skill of learning songs by ear you need to learn about song keys, about harmony and about intervals and rhythm.To learn about these things we need to study scales, chords and train our ear to recognise patterns.
