What would have happened if the Titanic had instead slammed head on into the iceberg? Would it have survived? Would it have been worse? Or what?
This is a much debated question that seems just about evenly split among today’s better known Titanic Aficionados. If we had 100 duplicate Titanic’s to crash test straight into (90 degree) icebergs of similar size/descriptions to that which doomed the ship you’d likely have results ranging from the ship sinking faster than the historic account to the damage being confined to the first 4 compartments meaning the ship survived.Having said all this I personally fall into the category of those who say Titanic would more likely have survived a head-on collision with the iceberg. First let me make abundantly clear I don’t know Jack Shit about physics or ship building in general, but personally I have this gut sort of feeling that Titanic’s first 4 compartments would have been sufficient to have absorbed the enormous amount of energy that would have been involved between the two opposing masses upon impact. Yes, a head on collision scenario between Titanic and the iceberg would have been one hell of a jolt for every single soul on board the ship with high casualty rates suffered by crew members largely of the Black Gang and the Engineers whose living quarters were stationed in the forward portions of the ship but, in my opinion the event would have been survivable.I do find some bit of assurance for a head on collision being survivable knowing that Harland & Wolf in more recent times actually ran many simulated tests based on all the technical data it has on Titanic’s specs and concluded that indeed she would be badly shaken but not sunk.
