What is Richmond CA like?

I lived in Richmond from January 2012 to October 2015.   I chose Richmond because I was able to acquire a 3 bedroom 2 bathroom rental with a yard wrapped around it and a driveway for $1100 a month.  This was in the Iron Triangle, which is kind of a rough area.  The areas perceived as even more rough might be found in North Richmond. The nicer parts could be found close to San Pablo and in the hills.  Once you are in the hills, its about as nice as anywhere in the bay.    I would occasionally hear gunfire.  My neighborhood was under constant police scrutiny.  One man was shot 8 times a half a block away.  Another man was murdered down the street, shot 13 times in his car.  His loved ones put a memorial on my fence, since my house was right there on the corner of the intersection.  They would come to gather there, play music, pay respects.   With that said, people were very nice and jovial.  I never had a personal problem with anyone.  I was a minority, being caucasian.  My neighbors were mostly hispanic, black, and asian, in that order.  It was a cool, exciting place to live on a budget, with easy access to the rest of the bay area.  There was plenty of parking, and I lived .9 miles from BART.  I would sometimes walk home from the station at 1:00am with a few drinks in me, and I was never robbed or killed.  The streets are actually quiet at night, compared to SF and Oakland.  My girlfriend would like me to add that Richmond is the largest city in the US to have a Green Party mayor  (Necessary as the Chevron refinery takes up so much real estate there).  Also, Les Claypool of Primus grew up there.

What are some nice places to stop during our trip?

Williamsburg, VA. Gettysburg, PA. VMI (Virginia Military Academy); They have Lee's horse - stuffed - seriously. Richmond, VA - the Museum of the Confederacy (I parked my car with NY plates right in front, and then miraculously, went thru the whole museum with the sudden return of my BOSTON accent!) If you were going north - I'd say West Point - but since you are going south, Annapolis. Atlanta (underground). Philadelphia - the usual Independence Hall stuff, Liberty Bell, etc. - and the City Hall I(take the elevator to the TOP - right under Franklin's feet!) You brothers will freak over the Mutter Museum - all medical freaks, but in cases for doctors of bygone eras to study. I love the Eyeball Wall - plaster copies of all the accidents and diseases that came thru this clinic in Paris, I think. There is also a REALLY cool Masonic temple to see (really - and we are not into Masonic stuff . . but this is amazing). there are also good kids' museums in Philly - and a great art museum ( the one where Rocky ran up the steps? Yeah - there is a museum there.)

You might never get to Disneyland at this rate - but when you do, take the ride through all the presidents, etc. We are in our sixties, and NOT into MouseEars - but going to Disney again in November, just becasue of all the cool stuff - and very educational ( yeah - we are retired teachers.)

Meanwhile - buy the DVD of "How the States Got Their Shapes", and also "The States"- if you get birthday money, GET THESE - you will EAT THEM UP!!!

Are there any Quorans from Northern Virginia?

What kind of “from” do you mean? As in born or raised? No to the first, yes to the second. My family found themselves in NoVA when I was five and a half. Every year or so, we would pack up and move from one place to another. It began with Fairfax, then Leesburg, Herndon, Falls Church, Vienna, back to Leesburg, then Sterling, and finally Reston. That's seven cities/towns and two counties in roughly six years. We hung around for a year and a half in Reston and then moved to Saudi Arabia for three years. Finally, we settled our butts in Ashburn, and have been here for a whopping four years, changing houses twice. My little sister was born in Reston, in the town houses right across from the town center with the AMC movie theater and the Panera (which, by the way, I've boycotted due to having to pay for parking now). My brother was born in the Lansdowne hospital across from the SunTrust bank and Fire Station 22 (where I now volunteer). I “graduated” from Neil Armstrong Elementary in Reston, my middle sister went to Belmont Ridge Middle School, and my youngest sister went to Belmont Elementary and now goes to Newton Lee Elementary. I graduted from Riverside in Leesburg this year and my sister graduates next year. We grew up going to the town center and the library, and visiting the White House every Christmas and gawking at the lavishly decorated Christmas tree. We hiked Algonkian Park, petted goats at the Reston Zoo, and watched the fireworks almost every year at Water Mine.So yeah, I suppose you could say I'm “from” Northern Virginia. At least that's what I'll be telling everybody when I go to Montana next month.Oh yeah, and the rest of the fam is thinking about relocating to Arizona next year.

Is Martinsville Speedway strict on alcohol?

you will not need to show ID, no. they are strict on having soft sided coolers. hard coolers will not be allowed in. but not so strict on the size. the security guys doing bag and coolers checks have a leanth of pvc pipe with them, and your cooler is not supposed to be any longer or wider than the pipe, but for the most part they are not real strict on that, as long as the cooler isn't TOO much bigger than the pipe. one thing they look for is wheels on the cooler. if it has wheels, it wont be allowed in. when they search the cooler, just make sure there is no glass, it won't be allowed in. remember, they bag check guys are very busy, so they're not checking but so close. i do event security myself and i've done bag and cooler checks at many richmond races, and richmond is an ISC owned track just like martinsville, so the same rules apply. believe me, i know what i'm talking about.
