Why does battery decrease even though it's connected on the charger?
As your phone is just over one year old, i don't think there is any defect in the battery, unless some manufacturing defect has creeped up now. I do agree with some of the other reasons given in the answers. However, I have a different point to make, which may just be the reason for your problem.I can talk about my Samsung Galaxy Note Edge which is about a year old. I have also seen this happening sometimes. It happened when i was using a non-standard charger for the phone and my phone was being used for some heavy download from internet. Although, the phone was showing that it was being charged, but actually my phone was loosing charge!I did some research and found that the problem was due to not using standard charger. A phone like Galaxy Note Edge has a fast charger. Any other charger (unless its of good brand) do try to charge the phone, but because it doesn't provide the current at the rate at which the phone needs, the rate of charging is very very slow So, it charges very slowly. And if at that point of time you use your phone, it actually starts losing charge.I have seen the same problem happening in my car, when i am using the car battery to charge the phone but moment i start using it (for making calls through bluetooth), the phone actually starts getting discharged.
Does using a phone while it is charging really damage the battery?
While the phone is being charged the charger supplies necessary current to charge our phone battery.lets make one thing clear,while you use a device(even if its screen is on) the phone draws its power from the battery only.when the device is used while the battery is charging it actually means that the charging current from charger is divided and is shared with the battery and our device,thus the battery rests in equilibrium state of charging slowly.This causes the battery to be charged slower.the problem with most chargers is they don’t supply enough current while the phone running on battery its power draw might vary depending upon use case like signal strength, data connection on etc.These spikes of power drawn cannot be supplied by chargers so the battery should supply which makes the constant slow charge state unstable,this causes the battery to discharge and then charged again.note that cheaper chargers which might not be able to handle high currents might get damaged.Battery life time is determined by many factors out of which charge cycle plays important role,when a battery is charged and discharged completely, it is called 1 charge cycle .In the above case the battery undergoes lots of partial charge cycles which in theory shouldn’t affect normal phone’s batteries since they are Li ion based.If your phone for some reason is Ni-Cd battery bad day for you as these batteries have some memory effect and thus partial charging and discharging might cause serious battery life degradation.its not over!!!!!!!!!!!1The other main enemy out there is heatwhile you use your phone normally it heats,this is due to many reasons but they do produce heat normally.Your batter produce heat while charging (why they produce is another topic ).if there are two heat sources your phonemight heat up badly and this can reduce your battery life.In Summary*its not proven that using phone while charging is dangerous for battery.*you can use your phone while charging if your device is within temperature limits*using good quality charges is good for battery and you overall.ps:I am new to quora and might not meet the standards so please forgive me.the articles i considered for this questions are:How to Prolong Lithium-based BatteriesBattery charging tips and tricks for prolonged lifeand some common science :)
