What are the best movie soundtracks?

For me it's The Social Network.I wasn't really aware that Trent Reznor and Atticuss Ross scored the film when I went to see it in the cinema. But as there's that opening sequence with Mark Zuckerburg running across the Harvard campus, I realised that the film score perfectly complimented the film. It's lonely piano over the swarmatron brought home the sense of isolation that the main character was feeling.Throughout the film I felt that the soundtrack perfectly complimented Aaron Sorkin's dialogue. The soundtrack never swells to the forefront in a way that seems distracting, yet it's always simmering in the background.I also love the way the main theme (Hand Covers Bruise) has three separate versions that appear throughout the film. The first time it's heard is as Mark is still at Harvard, and the grand piano has a warm feel. Yet as the movie begins to display Mark's alienation from his friends, the theme becomes more distant, bring played on an upright piano with the microphone slowly moved away. The extra content on the DVD and Blu-ray releases show a great insight into the production of the soundtrack. Showing how closely Trent Reznor, Atticuss Ross and David Fincher worked to produce the perfect soundtrack.Infact, the album remains my most played album on iTunes, and indeed the only soundtrack album I have ever bought. The music is perfect to listen to whilst writing, as it's entirely instrumental. I find the swarmatron effects help me clear my head and focus. Hope this helps :)

Audiophiles: What are the best songs to test/showcase headphones?

I’ve tested countless headphones at trade shows, industry events, with “golden ear” acoustic engineers, at at headphone suppliers in Asia.Just about everyone uses this live version of The Eagles “Hotel California” to test and showcase headphones:The Eagles - Hotel California - The best Live version all Time - video dailymotionIt’s THE “insider” standard song for testing headphones. Not the more popular studio version, not any of OTHER live versions, but this specific live version. It’s kind of bizarre, but it makes sense - disregarding how you feel about The Eagles artistically, it’s a great showcase for a set of headphones:You have sub-bass content with the kick drum (comes in at 0:55), so you can really hear how the product performs from 20hz-100hzThere’s 4 (really beautifully performed) guitar parts - 3x acoustic + one electric bass. Sometimes in unison, sometimes playing counterpoint. On top of that, you have a really strong lead male vocal that layers back-up vocal harmoniesIt has SPACE. It’s not a terribly busy track. Minimalist percussion and really tasteful musicianship. In general, it’s just a pleasant track to listen to - and when you are hearing the same song 10+ times in a row, that goes a long wayThis certainly isn’t the ONLY song used to test/showcase headphones. There’s many impeccably recorded, spatially rich tracks that are animated by a great set of headphones - many are documented in this thread (no mention of Steely Dan though - what gives?).But this one has emerged as a standard for testing/showcasing headphones. And before anyone can beat me to it:

Are there any jobs where people get paid to do virtually nothing?

You have just described my current job. I’m the IT guy at a biotech company. I’ve automated my major responsibilities out of existence. So, I’m sitting around all day every day with nothing to do. I could probably play video games all day provided I could avoid feeling self conscious about it.When I talked to my employer about reducing my hours. They went into a panic attack. Apparently, if I’m not here, then there will be no one to fix the system if something goes wrong. It’s been several weeks since the last incident.I’m planning to quit because it’s boring. It doesn’t give me much in the way of opportunities to improve my skills. It doesn’t have opportunities for career advancement. And doesn’t feel very fulfilling. However, if you feel like this post-automation job is something that you want, here’s how you get it:Get a degree in Computer Science or related.Get a job at a non-IT company, existing employees won’t know how to do what you do and you won’t be expected to do their work.Automate any recurring job responsibilities: backups, processing workflows, etc.Find a use for all of the free time in your workday. I recommend asking for an office as that will screen out the background noise if you decide to work on the next theory of relativity, or hide the fact that all you do is play video games from your coworkers.Enjoy getting paid for what you know instead of what you do.Please take my job, I don’t want it._______________________UPDATE__________________________Against the advice of my many commenters I quit my do nothing job to focus on a job search. It was the right call as it allowed me to spend more time to search, made me more motivated and gave me the option to move to where the jobs are. I found my next job just a few months into the search.I thought I knew what a do nothing job was, I was wrong. My job was with a consulting firm called Infosys. They were supposed to fly me from consulting job to consulting job. Those jobs never materialized, so I just sat around my house collecting a paycheck for substantially more money then I was getting at my last job.I used the time to get my current software development job. It is MUCH busier and more fun than my previous jobs. But I had to take a pay-cut to get it.
