Where Colonies Formed More For Financial Or Religious Reasons

What were the reasons for settlement in the original 13 colonies.?

There were many reasons why people colonized North America. One of the main reasons is that the New World presented people with an opportunity to earn a decent living and perhaps even to become wealthy. During the time of colonization, profitable jobs were scarce in England, and land was very difficult to obtain because it was expensive. By moving to one of the colonies, an individual had a better chance to earn a living than if they remained in England. Once in the New World many settlers earned a living by becoming farmers, hunters, and businessmen. Some of these settlers became indentured servants as well.

Another reason that people traveled to the New World was to acquire land. Most settlers were given free land or land at low cost. Land not only gave settlers feelings of independence, it also provided them with status and allowed them certain rights in the community, including voting.

Religion was another reason that people came to the New World. Some settlers wished to have the chance to worship freely while others came to America to escape religious persecutions. Some of these groups were the Puritans, Quakers, Roman Catholics, Huguenots, and Jews.

In the bigger picture, kings and queens were interested in creating colonies because colonies contributed to the political, economic and military superiority of a country. As the English, Dutch, Spanish, and French strove for economic and political superiority, their quest took them into newly discovered lands. The equation Land = Power = Money was at play in this quest, and these lands became important staging areas for the military might of these European powers.

What role did religion play in the push for colonies?

After religion wars in the old europe, people from England travelled to the new world by the hope to establish certain utopic ideal of peace and liberty, so the settlers of the catholic Maryland colony, the Mayflowerr's puritans who created New England and the William Penn's Quakers settled in Pennsylvania.

Their ideal was to elevate as an univeral feature the spirit of the humble people by religious sects, a new world conception: peace and liberty, all together with mercantilism.

That spirit and its later development became the typical pilgrim concious, partly advantages and partly a strange religious unction, somethig like the elected people.

So, the american society grow democratic since the beginning, based on nature, Bible reading, saving by the work, liberty, mercantilism and the personal advantage, clear things from humble people.

Meow! I wish it is usefully.

What elements did all the original thirteen colonies have in common and what major differences existed?

Common:
Each colony practiced freedom of religion.
Each colony believed and practiced a democratic representative government.
Each colony aggressively pursued capitalism and free commerce.
Each colony was sovereign unto itself.

Differences:
The role of slavery
Authority to raise taxes
The role of Colonial military
Attitudes towards Indians

Which colonies were established for economic reasons?

The corporate colonies: Virginia, the Carolinas, etc. If they weren't established for religious reasons (Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Rhode Island...Maryland to a certain extent), they were established for mostly economic reasons.

How were colonial virginia and massachusetts different? How were they similar?

One of the biggest differences is why the colonies were started. Jamestown was created purely as a financial venture and the Massachusetts Bay Colony was started for religious reasons.

Founding: Virginia- founded by the Virginia Company of England. Was the first settlement in 1607. Only founded for economical reasons and was a Royal Colony (supported by Queen).
Massachusetts- founded by Puritan business men who wanted religious freedom as well as money. Founded in 1628. Was a Charter Colony (supported by a company).

Religion: V- Anglican. No religious toleration.
M- Puritan. They didn't really like other religions.

Government: V- Royal Colony. Had system of counties(run by governor and sheriff) that were then broken up into parishes (run by vestries).
M- Charter Colony. Same system as above basically.

Landholding Patterns:V- All of the people lived on large plantations that thrived on the crops. A large town was in the center of all the plantations with a few small houses and shops.
M- the people lived in small towns that had farms and usually one large square with a church and shops surrounded by houses on the outskirts.

Although both were settled by the English, colonial New England was dramatically different from colonial Ch?

CHESAPEAKE: Founded for mostly economic reasons. Society was based around growing tobacco, and exporting it. Much more secular than NE, they were passive members of the Anglican Church. Had very non-democratic societies. Made up of huge plantations.

NE: Founded for religious reasons (Puritans). Had very democratic governments, and all colonies divided into villages where all men of property who were members of the church could vote. Later became more successful as merchants, particularly in the "Triangle Trade."

is that enough?
