Where Does The Water In Lake Baikal Come From

Where does the water in Lake Baikal come from?

The lake is in a deep basin that intersects the local water table.

With very low evaporation in that area, the lake would hold water even if no rain fell.

Did Google Earth show this ??
Lake Baikal was formed as an ancient rift valley, having the typical long crescent shape with a surface area of 31,722 km2 (12,248 sq mi).

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lake_Baika...

Lake Baikal is in a rift valley, created by the Baikal Rift Zone, where the Earth's crust pulls apart. Thus creating the deep rift that currently is full of water.

Is Lake Baikal saltwater or fresh?

Baikal is a world’s largest reservoir of a fresh water.Lake Baikal - WikipediaI also give some additional advice: use Google.

Does lake baikal hold the same amount of fresh water as the great Lakes?

According to Wikipedia, Lake Baikal has the larger volume (23615 vs 22810 km3). But the area of the Great Lakes is much larger (244106 vs 31722 km2), so the volume is more sensitive to lake stage. Nevertheless, using the Wikipedia values, the stage of the Great Lakes would have to increase by more than 3 m for the volume to be equal to that of Lake Baikal.

Are there [freshwater] sharks in lake Baikal?

No, (according to my recursive research) there are not any naturally occurring sharks or relatives of sharks recorded in this amazing lake. The site below lists the most prevalent species.

How did Lake Baikal form?

Ooh, this one is fun! Lake Baikal, like most elongated and very deep lakes, is a rift valley. The crust spreads apart and a central strip bounded by faults drops. Think of the keystone of an arch.Lake Baikal is a distant result of the collision between India and Eurasia. It is the deepest lake on earth and probably the oldest at about 25 million years. It contains nearly as much water as all the Great Lakes combined. This is what happens when you push a rigid block into the corner of a block of clay. The amazing thing is this absurdly simple model actually looks like Asia. Here’s a sketch of India colliding with Eurasia beginning 50 million or so years ago. The main Eurasian Plate is yellow, the North China block is green. Lake Baikal is the topmost step in the zig-zag boundary. Here’s a sketch map of the collision zone. Areas of compression are green, volcanism is red, and crustal extension is yellow. Lake Baikal is at the top. Note also the big square bend in the Huang He (Yellow River) is due to faulting.================================Aiming Lin, Zhenyu Yang, Zhiming Sun, Tianshui Yang, 2001; How and when did the Yellow River develop its square bend? Which is the largest fresh water lake in Asia? Lake baikal or Lake wular?

The lake Wular does not come anywhere in getting the honour of being the largest lake in the Asia. The lake Baikal located in Siberia is the deepest freshwater lake in the world and naturally also in Asia, but not in its water spread. The water spread of the lake Baikal is only 31,722 sq.km.Probably, very few people know that the Caspian sea, though called sea, is the largest freshwater lake in its spread in Asia and even world. It has the water spread of 3,71000 sq.km. Its name Caspian sea has been given by Romans in the medieval era because some Roman king tested the water of this lake from its southernmost end where it is slightly salty. The lake otherwise is a freshwater lake with the rivers Volga, Kura,Ural and Tarek falling into it. It has originated around 5.5 million years back by plate tectonics. However, some scientists opine that it is a remnant of Tethys sea existed 10 crore years back. This is doubtful as the Tethys never existed north of Himalayas which was than an Eurasian continent.

Is there such a lake called Lake Baikal?

Yes - isn't it the deepest lake in the world?

"Lake Baikal lies in Southern Siberia in Russia between Irkutsk Oblast to the northwest and Buryatia to the southeast near the city of Irkutsk. In Russian, it is called Байка́л (Ozero Baykal, О́зеро literally meaning Lake, pronounced ['ozʲɪrə bʌj'kɑl]), and in the Buryat and Mongol languages it is called Dalai-Nor, or "Sacred Sea". The origin of the name Baikal comes from Baigal or Байгал which is translated from the Mongolian language as "nature". It is also known as the Blue Eye of Siberia.[1][2]

Lake Baikal is the deepest and oldest lake in the world as well as the largest (by volume) freshwater lake. It contains over 20% of the world's liquid fresh surface water and more than 90% of Russia's liquid fresh surface water. It is a World Heritage Site.[3] Olkhon, by far the largest island in Lake Baikal, is the second largest lake-bound island in the world (the largest being Manitoulin Island in Lake Huron).[4]"

Just do a google image search - there are a ton of pictures.

How does the de-silting of a lake bed prevent the water in the lake from drying up?

De silting increases the water storage capacity. More water in the lake means more water percolates in the soil. More water in the soil means higher water table. Higher water table means more water in the lake.
