Where can I find cheap cat trees?
When we bought ours it was $75 but considering all three cats love it, it was way worth the money. They've used it since day 1. It's about 5' tall (tallest perch is about as tall as half way up the window), all the posts are covered with sisal (and since we got it I haven't caught my cats scratching in any other place besides their other scratching mat), it has 3 tiers and they can all perch on it at the same time without fighting. The kitten likes it especially since she can swing at the older cats and then hide under the perch so they can't get her back! The thing will last for MANY years even with wear and tear. Considering the money I spend on all the other toys I've bought over the years its not anymore expensive per day than those toys. If you figure it out, our cat tree costs us about 20 cents a day for the first year. I always balked at the prices but since getting this one, it's worth it. I didn't want to pay over $80 and it fit our budget and space requirements nicely. We got ours from Pet Valu where my daughter works.

Trees that grow in hot, dry climates?
Peonies are native to the prairie, and generally thrive in a hot dry sunny climate (as long as you water them regularly if it doesn't rain). They also don't like to be transplanted, and take about two or three years to fully recover and give you the type of blooms you used to have. This includes any plants you may have taken with you, and also any new ones you purchase. They love the the sun, but the clay will be a problem. Before you plant them, dig big holes and mix in some compost, soil and a little sand. Then just plant and water and be patient. Good Luck! Peonies are my favorites! Usually ours start to bloom about now where we live (New England), but its been such a nasty winter the buds are just starting to form.
Where can I buy trees I can plant?
Purchase and planting is best done between November and March. Bare-root and root-balled trees are only available in autumn and early winter and they should be planted immediately. If adverse weather conditions such as frozen or waterlogged soil delay this, they can be heeled in (temporary planting in more favourable soil perhaps in a raised bed to prevent the roots drying out) until planting is possible. Take care to avoid disturbance of root-balled trees in particular, covering roots with straw or bracken for protection.
