Where Is America And What Is This Continent Called Australia

Is the continent called Oceania or Australia?

Some people say Australia is a continent but does that include Indonesia and new Zealand? Some people call Australia and the countries around it the continent or Oceania. Which one is it?

If Australia is a continent, then what is Oceania?

Oceania is a geographic region, which consists of Australia and the three main Pacific island groups (Micronesia, Melanesia, and Polynesia). Most of the islands of the Pacific Ocean lie in this region.Loosely defined, a geographic region is just a continuous geographic area that shares some sort of common feature. These features could be based on physical geography (e.g. climate, ecology, geology) or human geography (e.g. political boundaries, language, religion).Broadly speaking, Oceania is a distinct region because it has an ecology different from Asia, is historically a political region distinct from Asia, and has its position across the Pacific Ocean as a unifying geographic feature.By contrast, continents are generally defined by their geology. While continents have never been consistently defined, what is common across definitions is that land must be part of the same area of continental crust - i.e. the same landmass or an island that is part of the continental shelf.Oceania cannot be a continent because its landmasses do not lie on the same area of continental crust. As you can see below, Australia and New Zealand are actually on two separate continents. Most of the other islands of Oceania do not lie on a continental crust, being formed instead by volcanic eruptions from the ocean floor.

Continent is Oceania or Australia?

Australia is the continent, Oceania is the region.

Continents are just very large landmasses. Australia is the only country that is also a continent. Oceania is the larger region that contains Australia, New Zealand and the many island countries of the South Pacific. Australasia is what the Oceania region used to be called about 40 years ago.

Regions can contain continents and islands, but continents are single landmasses. The country of Australia for instance includes the Australian continent, Tasmania (which is an island) and various other islands in the Indian, Pacific and Southern oceans. The Asian continent would be just the mainland. The Asian region would also include Taiwan, Indonesia, Philippines, Japan etc. for example.

Is Australia or Oceania the continent?

Australia is continent one of 7 continents
Oceania is not a continent and never will be its area of islands in the SW Pacific ocean
Some people subscribe to only 6 continents (land masses)
or even 5

"The seven-continent model is usually taught in China and most English-speaking countries. The six-continent combined-Eurasia model is preferred by the geographic community, Russia, the former states of the USSR, and Japan. The six-continent combined-America model is taught in Latin America, and most parts of Europe including Germany[citation needed], Greece[citation needed], Italy[citation needed], Portugal and Spain. This model may be taught to include only the five inhabited continents (excluding Antarctica)[20][21] — as depicted in the Olympic logo.[22]

The names Oceania or Australasia are sometimes used in place of Australia. For example, the Atlas of Canada names Oceania,[14] as does the model taught in Latin America and Iberia.

Why do U.S citizens call Australia a continent?

There’s probably a historical reason for this, but this is the answer I have:That’s what we were taught growing up. Why don’t we use the metric system? That’s what we were taught growing up. Why do we still refer to Myanmar as Burma? Nope, not touching that one.I would counter this question with a question: why do English people use feet instead of metres? Why do Australians (and Americans) say soccer instead of football? Silly cultural differences. Also, I’ve met Americans who have now learned Oceania as a continent and Australia as a country…whatever. Who cares.

When did they change the name of the continent Australia to Oceania?

Note that I'm not talking about the country of Australia, I'm talking about the continent which consists of Australia, Papua New Guinea, and parts of Indonesia.

When I was in elementary school, I learned a continental song:
Asia, Africa, Europe and Australia, Antarctica, America both north and south.

And I've obviously always known it to be the continent of Australia.

But a couple days ago on a test I had to name the continents (it was a weird test to be taking in high school...) and I got it WRONG because I said Australia.

So I asked my teacher about it and he said the continent is Oceania.

When the heck did that happen?
