Where Is My Third Hermit Crab

My hermit crab is a bully!?

Well I always see my bigger hermit crab run towards the little one and stomp all over her! I always get worried when she does that! I don't want my little one to be killed!!! Please help if you know what she's doing or has any information on it!

Thanks!

How can I save my Hermit Crabs?

Hermit crabs don't need stress coat in their water. That probably isn't want killed any of them but they don't need it. i know some websites say they do but they don't. I never used it with mine and I've had tons of healthy moults.

Sometimes hermit crabs just have bad moults. I lost one a few months ago to a bad moult and I've had them for years.

Are you spraying your crabs directly when they just moulted. that's a bad idea to do when their shell is still soft. I never spray mine directly because it makes them mad. I just spray the sides.

You have three crabs that haven't moulted in two years? That sounds kinda strange, could they have moulted with out you noticing?

Check the humidity and Temperature to make sure they are at the right levels. If it is too cold or too warm it may throw off the moults.

Are your crabs moulting on the surface or digging down? Surface moulters are more likely to have problems. The substrate should twice the height of your biggest crab. Sand and coconut fibre are best. I would avoid pebbles because they can't dig well in it.
Get a few caves if you don't have them already. some crabs like to moult in caves.

Have you thought about isolating moulters? If you have an isolation tank fill it with sand and keep the humidity really high. place it in a warm dark place it may boost your survival rate.

Try feeding crabs rich moulting food. lots of eggs and egg shells, cuttle bone, natural peanut butter, carrots, dead meal worms, shrimp, or crab shells.

When they do moult let them be. even if it takes weeks don't bother them.

Check for mites. mites sometimes will not appear to be a problem untill a crab moults. so keep an eye out for tiny moving dots.

Do hermit crabs respond to music?

I see no reason why not. Their antennae are very sensitive and probably every bit as effective at "hearing" for a hermy as our ears are for us. Most likely the singing gave a soothing vibration which aroused its curiosity. As with most living things, hermys can have different personalities, and it's quite normal for a new introduction to initially be quite shy for a while. I would suggest repeating the experiment from time to time to see if you get similar results.

We were offered some pet hermit crabs, should I take them or is it cruel?

All hermits are wild. Captive breeding has yet to be successful. As long as you have the right set up, it’s not as cruel as you may think. You can have them for years and they are pretty cool. I have four. the first two were forced upon me by a friend who didn’t want to care for them. The third from a fair and the fourth someone on Craigslist was rehoming. You need to have a tank that is 10 gallons plus five for every hermit after the first one. And you should have more than one as they are social creatures. A under the tank heater but on the back of the tank, insulated so it will keep the heat in. A closed top, to keep in the humidity. Two dishes deep enough for them to submerge their entire shell, with a way to get in and out. One for Salt water and one for fresh. Bubblers in the water dishes and a moss pit will help with humidity.Things for them to climb on. Branches, rocks, hiding spots. One of mine particularly love hanging ropes. You’ll need Eco Earth, play sand that you can buy at a hardware store or Wal-Mart for your substrate. You can add crushed oyster shells and leaves. The exact measurments, I can’t remember. The substrate has to fill half of your tank. They love to borrow.Food. Fresh fruit, veggies, eggshells, chia seeds and soooo much more they will eat. This is a bit of the info, but enough to get you started. It can be a bit of a process to start off but it’s worth it if you are willing to put in the time and effort.

Hermit crab molted for 2 months, up for a day and went back under the sand?

there could be many reasons for this, some hermit crabs take a long time to get used to their surroudings, and stress will lead them to do that, and molt. also, he may be coming out at night?? make sure you have his habitat set up correctly! he should be in a ten gallon aquarium at the least, with a 50/50 mix of calcium sand and coconut fiber, you need to mist the enclosure alot, they like it humid! putting a thick towel over one half of the top will help keep it high. they like it more than room temperatuire, they like it around 75-80oF!! you should add a hide out for him, a heating pad underneath the tank, somewhere, he should have a climbing/scratching branch and a choice between two water types- one bowl fresh and decholirinated- the other bowl salt water, you can buy the miz for salt water at your pet store. Try a mix of food like a crushed fruit and flower powder, crab cakes, crab meals, and fresh smuched dark greens and veggies!! give this to him all at once, they love variety. Other than that, petco is known to sell alot of their reptiles, ect, that have parasite and what not, there are treatments for this for hermies that will not cause harm if he doesnt have it, and wil prevent it and treat it!

Pregnant Hermit Crab? 10 points!?

how to tell if your hermit crab i pregnant?
1
Determine, as best you can, if your hermit crab is female. Females have two, pinhole-sized openings--called gonopores--on the underside of their third set of walking legs. They can only be seen if the hermit crab extends far out of its shell.
2
Consider whether your crabs have been in contact with males. If you have a tank of hermit crabs--and they are social creatures--make sure to confirm that there`s at least one male in the batch.
3
Keep an eye out for an accumulation of brick red eggs along the left side of her abdomen. Monitor these eggs for up to a month. They should change from their original brick red color to a dark gray.
4
Provide some salt water, in which your hermit crab can lay her eggs when the time comes. Hermit crabs lay their eggs in the ocean, not in a fish tank.
5
Understand that hermit crabs are almost impossible to breed in captivity. Although the eggs will burst after contact with salt water, the larvae will probably die for lack of food and proper conditions.

Can a bearded dragon share a cage with a hermit crab?

No. First, hermit crabs have pincers that can injure a bearded dragon during an altercation. Second, a bearded dragon would consider the hermit crab a threat and most likely attack and eat it. Third, and most important, hermit crabs and bearded dragons come from vastly different climates. A bearded dragon needs a fairly dry enclosure to avoid an often fatal upper respiratory infection. A hermit crab, on the other hand, lives in a far moister climate and needs to have access to water at all times. A bearded dragon should have time to soak in water several times a week to rehydrate, however, water should not be left in their enclosure. Dragons rarely drink from standing water anyway and any amount of water in the tank, even a small bit, will increase the humidity as well as increase their likelihood of getting an upper respiratory infection which is often deadly to them.

My hermit crabs smell and I want them to GO AWAY. What do I do?

I bought these three hermit crabs over a year and a half ago, in the naive manner that all children do. In my past experience, hermit crabs have died within a couple months, and it's not like I wanted *that* to happen, I just never realized what the long term effects are of managing them.

Anyway, I've grown more and more tired of feeding them and giving them water, and their cage is impossible to clean because it is a metal grate cage, so I can't pour out the gravel to clean it. The worst part is the fact that they are growing progressively more stinky. Yesterday, I preceived a tremendous stench from the cage, and it's getting worse. I can't stand being in my room! I think one must have died!! It's hard to tell because they are all capable of pulling far back into their shells. And I'm scared to check.

I feel bad, but these are NOT happy crabs, and I really want to get rid of them!! Can I give them to a pet shop or something?? What do I do!?

How do I tell the difference between a 'land' or 'marine' hermit crab? And what are their differing needs?

According to the website http://hermit-crabs.com/care.html , "The species Coenobita perlatus or "strawberry hermit crab" cannot survive without access to a full dish of salt water in its crabitat at all times. To deprive these beautiful crabs of salt water is to condemn them to a slow and painful death, as they cannot regulate their body's salt level without it." That species looks like this: http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&ie... That might be what your sister was referring to when she said 'marine' hermit crab. There is a species identification page here: http://hermit-crabs.com/species.html

Also, your crab needs at least 70% humidity and a temperature no lower than 72 degrees Fahrenheit. It can't live on rocks, but rather needs a special substrate that it can bury in and is moist. Coconut fiber or Forest Bedding or special sand are good choices of bedding for your crab.
There's a lot that you need to know about caring for your hermit crab. You should read this webpage http://hermit-crabs.com/care.html
The first thing you should do is figure out what species you have. Some species are only able to be kept alive by experts, but if you have one of the easier species then it may be possible for you to keep the crab as a pet if you do enough research and provide a proper home for it.

How maney Hermit Crabs Can live in a 10 gallon tank?

You can have 2-4. You can add more if you have high places to climb. Each hermit crab needs 2 gallons but they will often die if they are molting and you are overstocked. Remember you need one freshwater bowl and one saltwater bowl.Hermit crabs love climing so give then logs and other high decor.mist them at least once a day. get a spray bottle and spray them with it. The humidity has to be high or else they will die.
u can get a large shallow container and use it as your salt water dish.that way they can wade and drink!Remember to leave at least 3-5 shells iin there so the hermit crabs can move in after molting. The more shells the better.
Hope i helped!Good luck!
