Where To Buy Good And Cheap Oil Painting

How much would it cost to get into oil painting?

Here's a better answer. About $65 will get you started.

You can purchase a starter set of Daler Rowney-Georgian oil paints at Wal Mart for about $15 dollars. It's a good starter set for the beginner with all the colors you need. Daler Romney Georgian is a decent student grade paint that is very cost effective. They have sets in both acrylic and oil. Pick up a few inexpensive brushes, a flat, a round and a ferrel in white nylon in both small and large sizes for about $3 bucks each at Michaels. Get a can of odorless thinner at Wal Mart for about $5. And, buy some canvas boards and a small bottle of Linseed Oil at Walmart. That way, you can see if you like this pursuit for about $50 dollars or less. $65 if you buy the cheap easel that Wal Mart sells.

Don't use the online art supply places that other people suggested UNLESS you are going to do this seriously. They are good places and wholesale prices, BUT, remember, the cost includes the shipping and handling. And so, lots of times, you end up paying the equivalent of retail anyway, and you have to wait for them to come.

Now, if you go serious professional, you could spend $125 or more on a SINGLE TUBE of oil paint. I have a collection of BLOCKX oil paints that is worth about $1200. And, I have a bunch of Williamsburg Oil Paints that cost about the same. The best way to buy canvas is by the roll, and stretch it yourself. $700 a roll for the good stuff. If you are buying like this, THEN it is necessary to buy online. Michael's isn't going to stock this kind of paint. Nobody is. I like less expensive brushes, because I prefer to throw them away and buy new ones often. But, you can get a lot of mileage out of even a cheap brush if you take care of them with some good brush soap, .

What type of canvas should i buy for oil painting?

You can oil paint on anything, so long as you prime it with gesso first. If you're just starting out I wouldn't suggest doing media studies on expensive canvas, a reasonably thick paper will work just fine.
Buy the cheapest gesso in the store, my $3 tub works just as well as my $15 tub. Pre-primed surfaces aren't usually primed very well, it's cheaper and more effective to just do it yourself. I slap on about 3-4 layers with a sponge. If you don't prime your surface, oil paint tends to soak in like marker (not good).
When you start doing "serious" paintings, I recommend trying a variety of surfaces. I personally don't like the texture of canvas, and prefer to paint on wood/masonite. Whatever floats your boat!

To oil paint, you need:
- oil paints (I recommend burnt sienna, white, and a warm/cool shade of yellow, red, and blue)
- oil for diluting (turpentine is nasty. The orange stuff is nicer, but it's all bad for you so make sure you keep things ventilated)
- oil for cleaning your brushes and hands. I use cooking oil because it's cheap, non-toxic, and gets the job done just as well. Then I wash with soap to get the cooking oil out!
- the aforementioned gesso and painting surface
- natural bristle brushes
- rags. I also use Q-tips.
- a palette. Look for something that closes and seals, your paints will be usable for months!
- easels are optional.

EDIT: as far as easels go....
there's a specific type for watercolour, because watercolour is really dependent on gravity and what angle your paper is at when the water dries. Basically it just allows you to adjust the angle more.
But with oil/acrylic paint, it doesn't matter really, so long as you are comfortable and aren't looking at your painting from a strong angle that will cause distortion. I have a cheap fold-up aluminum one that's great for portability, but sometimes I'll paint with a small painting on my lap or a table. Don't bother getting a big wooden one, unless you have a great big studio to go with it, it'll only cause inconvenience.

Where can I learn oil painting cheap in Chicago?

University of Youtube.  There is a Utrecht store near the Art Institute.  They sell very good quality, very reasonably priced art materials.  Buy white, primary red, primary yellow and primary blue.Learn to mix all your colors from these.  You can get other colors later if you want.  If you mix all your colors from scratch, your work might be more harmonious.Make color charts.  (see U of YT for how)Use paper designed for oil painting and paper palette to start.  There are some very good books along the lines of "Complete Oil Painting Course" that can be found in libraries, or used book stores.Start with just a few brushes, but decent quality.  The store mentioned above can guide you.If you get WINTON brand paint (a student grade paint from Winsor+Newton) you will find that it is kind of greasy.  Advantage of this is it can usually be used without medium$.Lots of ways to save money.Good luck!

What are the expenses of oil painting?

Oil painting can be very expensive. As a beginner you can start using already prepared canvas boards which are relatively cheap. Oil paints (artist quality) are expensive especially if you are using cadium colors. Then you need linseed oil and artist turpentine for creating a medium and then you still need turps for cleaning brushes etc. A student oil painting box can give you a good start. I suggest that if you have an hour or two to spare, go to an art supply shop and browse. You would get a fair idea of the cost to start painting in oils.
If you want to prepare your own canvases there are additional expenses such as stretchers, staple guns, canvas primers, glue etc, You can purchase already primed canvas (cotton or linen-different grades) but as I said check our an art supply store. Hope this helps

Oil Painting advice anyone?

Windsor & Newton make excellent oil colors. For a beginner, I would recomment Winton oil colors (A cheaper, student grade oil paint made by Windsor & Newton.) You will also need odorless mineral spirits (such as turpenoid) to thin the paint and clean up when you are done. I would also recommend buying some "liquin" oil medium--it make the paint dry much faster, and won't make it runny like too much turpenoid can.

As far as paper, you actually can use oil paints on any heavy paper (such as bristol board.) You will probably want to coat the paper with a thin layer of acrylic gesso before you begin to keep the paint from soaking through the paper(note: do NOT use your oil brushes with gesso, it will ruin them! a cheap house-paint brush works just fine.) Personally, I love the feeling of painting oil on canvas, and I recommend that you at least experiment with a few different surfaces to find what works for you. If you buy pre-stretched canvas, you won't need to gesso it, so that is one less thing you have to buy.) You can also buy masonite board from a hardware store to paint on. It can be much cheaper than canvas, but you will need to use gesso on it before you paint.

Good luck experimenting!
