Is 42 too old to learn MMA fighting?

ofcource man , on the blue mat we welcome anyone , of any age. Some guys your age who come in get discouraged after being beat by like guys in their 20s , but if you don't have any ego problems and are willing to learn along with the rest of us, then you will improve and make friends. One of our mma instructors at my gym is 55 years old , and is in such ridiculous shape, he is stronger than most of us. I even think you can fight local shows and stuff if you train hard , and stay focus. I think a guy who trains mma full on for 2-3 years is allot better than someone who trains mma half *** for 10 years. Go for it man , your 40 not dead.

Whats the cheapest way to learn MMA?

Cheapest way?

Find the best MMA school in your area. Sign up for the complete program.

Oh, about the money. The cheapest way is to get the best instruction possible so you learn quickly and you learn the right techniques. It's far cheaper to spend, say, $150 a month if the instructor is a UFC or Strikeforce veteran . . . if the BJJ instructor is a black belt . . . if the wrestling instructor has been a collegiate wrestler or, even better, coached collegiate wrestlers . . . . than to find some place for $80 a month that has a single instructor, maybe a purple belt in BJJ and a black belt in TKD who's never fought professionally.

Yeah, I know, you didn't want that answer. You want to know how to do it for $25 a month. That's not cheap. That's throwing your money away.

Meanwhile, stay involved with wrestling. You don't know much about wrestling at age 14, and wrestling is a critical skill in MMA.

And please don't say "wanna." That's what babies say.

Hope that helps.

Where can I learn MMA online from scratch?

You can’t learn MMA online from scratch. Sorry, but that’s the truth. No more than you can learn to drive a car online or learn to swim online. You can learn about MMA online. But to actually do it and become competent at it: No way. I know people who’ve learned some moves online, or learned how to improve their technique online. But MMA is about doing. And that means you have to do it.Another problem: MMA is actually a combination of martial arts. It almost always includes wrestling, Brazilian jiu jitsu, and either kickboxing or Muay Thai. You’re not talking about learning one sport online; you’re talking about learning a minimum of three. Any many fighters know other arts. Some have a background in karate. Some in judo. Some in boxing. And so on. You’re not going to learn those online, either.Another problem: Can you take a punch? You’ll never know sitting in front of a computer screen. My son wanted to be an MMA fighter, and he was good at wrestling, BJJ, and grappling. But could he take a punch? After about six months of kickboxing lessons, he competed at an in-house tournament. Yup. He could take a punch. Some folks can’t.You’re skinny. So? That probably means you have a good build for BJJ. My son’s short. It’s a good build for a wrestler, but not for BJJ or grappling. He routinely competes against guys 6″-10″ taller than him. He deals with it. You’ll have to, as well. And a final problem: You say you want to learn enough to protect yourself. Well, if your goal is self-protection, go to your local police department and ask them about classes in self-defense. MMA is a sport, albeit one that can give you some self-defense tools. But in MMA you can’t poke someone in the eyes, or knee the person in the groin. You can’t chop at your opponent’s neck. You can’t pick up a baseball bat or umbrella and use it as a weapon. But all those are possibilities in self-defense. If you want to learn self-defense, take a self-defense course. If you want to learn MMA, then take classes in wrestling, BJJ, grappling, kickboxing, and ultimately MMA.As for not having access to a school or academy: Find a way. Or move.

When will MMA fighters learn how to box?

Mixed Martial Arts is a combination of many different fighting styles and techniques. The orginal fighting styles and techniques must be altered to achieve maximum effectiveness in MMA. What works in a wrestling match doesn’t necessarily work exactly the same way in MMA. One great example is the difference between MMA stand up and boxing. What is the difference between the stand up technique needed for MMA and the technique of a top level boxer? Marcus Davis gives some insight:
“One is the way you stand,” Davis said. “The way everyone stands so upright and staggered. You need to square your hips to defend a takedown. Also, to check a kick, you can’t do that from a staggered stance. You have to center up a little bit, hips pointed forward, in order to check a kick correctly.

“That right there takes away a lot of your boxing stuff,” he said. “And then the way you throw punches, the way you move your head. The defense is different. In boxing you lean back and do, like, the fading out of a punch. You can’t do that in MMA. If you lean back, you leave your legs forward. That leg will either be kicked or it leaves the leg open for a takedown.”

Davis said one cannot bob and weave because of the danger of being kneed, or of the chance of being caught in a Muay Thai clinch that leaves one vulnerable to knees and elbows.

But once he made the transition, Davis said, there were elements of boxing he continued – and continues – to use.

“The timing of punches, being able to get into the pocket, throw punches and not get hit, I was still able to carry that over into my MMA,” he said. “Defensively, I figured out what works in MMA and what does not work in MMA. The big thing is head movement. You have to be able to move your head, and you still have a lot of MMA fighters who don’t know that. A lot of MMA fighters do what I call framing up, where they just put both their hands up and keep them nice and tight around their head.”

It's pretty obvious you're not going to read this since all you want is troll around here and start arguments with a bunch of biased bullshit that's been discussed and discredited, but this should explain why MMA fighters don't use traditional boxing stances and why it's looks so awkward.

P.S. Wrestling IS the best base for MMA since you can build on it and it's excellent for take-downs and take-down defense and you don't need to be a boxer to still know how punch hard.
