Which is the best national park near Toronto?

You do realize that Canada has a truly amazing Provincial Park system? You seemed to specify only national parks: There are currently eight of them in all of Ontario, and none are particularly close to Toronto.—-It’s a BIG province. And, I presume you DON’T mean “National Historical Sites”——there are dozens of them, all of them interesting to a curious mind. Next week I’m showing a bunch of them to a Grandson—it will take about a week, and I’m just hitting the ones I think are truly significant. We’ll only get 4 or 5 hundred click from Toronto.National Parks, on the other hand, tend to be less developed, and much harder to get to: There are eight of them in the province, but, with one exception, they are up to twelve hours away from Toronto, by car. That one exception is the latest one —the Rouge Valley Park, but that is a “national park” in name only. I used to live in it, (I think—the boundaries are still a little vague) but it’s really a “park” in name only. So far.Of the remainder, I really like Pele, but, if you’re into canvas and canoes, I don’t think you’ll find much to complain about at any of the others. The easiest way to decide, of course, is to put the same question into any search engine: you’ll get thousands of opinions, and .maybe find one that matches what you’re looking for.

Why don't Canadians who live near Lake Ontario eat the fish from that lake?

The government of Ontario publishes an annual guide detailing which species taken from which bodies of water are safe to eat and in what quantities. Many of the contaminants accumulate in the fatty tissues of these fish and are present in the highest concentrations in fish that are older ( larger ) and that are at the top of the food chain. If you glance at the attached guide from the province detailing the safety of species caught in a specific part of Lake Ontario, you will note that it is only safe to consume 1 meal ( per month or year, not sure) of Chinook Salmon if the Salmon is between 22 and 24 inches. It is not considered safe for at risk populations such as pregnant women. No other size Chinook is considered safe. While the presence of industrial contaminants such as dioxins and PCB’s in the waterways may have decreased over the past 40 years, one of the most prevalent contaminants is naturally occurring mercury. Lots of people do fish in Ontario waterways and we do consume the fish as well. When I was young we always kept a copy of the guidebook on the family boat so we would know if the fish we caught was safe and in what quantities. Nobody is going to bring the guide with them to a restaurant, so I think most Ontarians would be a little leary of the source if we were told the fish was local. It's much more peace of mind to just order the Atlantic Salmon from Nova Scotia knowing that piece of Salmon is definatly safe.Fish consumption advisory

What suggestions do you have for a road trip from Niagara Falls to Montreal?

There are attractions all along the route, and as much as I love my home city, getting around by car in it sucks. It’s also difficult and expensive to avoid. The Niagara region has a lot of winery tours. Most of them have web sites and you can see signs to them all along the Queen Elizabeth Way.Hamilton is actually worth a stop. The escarpment has a lot of parks, downtown has the Canadian Football Hall of Fame, Dundurn Castle is pretty much a unique piece of architecture, and there are some great Botanical Gardens.Like I said, you can’t avoid Toronto. Just about all roads linking one part of Ontario to another run through the Greater Toronto Area. If you can afford it, take the 407 around the GTA, but note that the east end of that highway ends in the middle of nowhere so you will have to take highway 412 to get back south. If you’re cheap, the 401 is free but often congested, particularly at rush hour. During evening and morning rush, it can be bumper to bumper all the way from Hamilton on the QEW, up the 403, and down the 401. However, the 403 is a much better route to get up to the 401 than either the 427 or the Gardiner/Don Valley Parkway. If you have the time, get off the 401 east of Oshawa and take old Highway 2 instead (#2 through Oshawa is a busy suburban road). It passes through several scenic old towns and it’s usually not that busy. It tends to run closer to the St. Lawrence and Lake Ontario too. It will just take longer. Highway 2 also hooks up with similar roads in Quebec that run next to the abandoned canal system.Again, this is a side trip, but Sandbanks Provincial Park south of Belleville in Prince Edward County is one of the prettiest places in Ontario.Downtown Kingston looks like something right out of the 19th century with it’s massive stone buildings. It used to be one of the most important cities in Canada. When you realize most of Ontario’s old buildings are brick, Kingston is an outlier. It won’t take long to drop buy and there are restaurants and other services in the downtown area so it’s a good place to stop. Fort Henry is nearby if you’re into history.

How much is a vacation (including flight costs) to Canada from Philippines in all of the tourist spots for 6 months 10 family members?

I looked at the list of top attractions and there are a few that are so difficult to get to and have very little accommodation that I would drop them from list.  For instance going to Baffin Island would probably require you charter an aircraft and make special arrangememts.  Less than 30,000 people live in Nunavut and very few maybe 1-200 live on Barfn Island.  There are ways to get there but it is long and complicated trip from southern Canada. I would also drop the sand uneasy of Lake Athabasca from the list (there are impressive fresh water sand dunes at Sandbanks Provincial Park and Wasaga Beach in Ontario - both have other interesting attractions near by as well).  I would also skip Churchhill MB if you want see are polar bears.  It is very hard to get to Churchhill, it takes a long to time to get there, and polar bears are dangerous.  If you want to see them than I recommend a visit to the Toronto or Vancouver zoo.You may want to look at the Via Rail unlimited travel passes.  For $1,500 a person you can get a rail pass that lets you get on and off the train as often as you want for one month.  It travels coast to coast and hits all of the southern distortions on your list.  It is a great way to see the country and is a heck of lot cheaper than flying and a lot less stressful. Finally you are going to spend over $400,000 on food and accommodations and tens of thousands of dollars of not hundreds of thousands of dollars on air fare ( the flight for the Phillppines to Vancouver will probably be cheaper than the flight from Vanxouver to Halifax).  I strongly encourage you spend the $5-10k to hire a professional travel agent to make all the arrangements.  They may be able find ways to save you tens of thousands of dollars given what you have asked for.   It will be a complicated trip.you could easily spend million dollars on this gift.  The suggestion below about hiring a guide is pretty good idea.Good luck, I hope they like your gift.

What is the best beach on lake Ontario?

Sandbanks Provincial Park. The beaches in the GTA are just OK.

What is a good place to go camping in southern Ontario?

I know about Sandbanks, but am looking for something more woodsy (I live right by a beach). Specific interests....Hiking, beautiful view, swimming (maybe some cliff diving) , in the Hamilton area or Toronto preferred, Niagara Falls works as well. Alcohol friendly a plus. Thanks!!
