Which fruits go well together in a smoothie?

I work at Smoothie King so I'll share some of my smoothie knowledge :)

Our most popular smoothies are ones with strawberry and banana, of course. BUT you only need a very small amount of banana to get it's flavor in there so don't do half and half or it will overpower the smoothie. Our runner up favorites are *strawberry, banana, and papaya* and *strawberry and kiwi*. Some other popular fruit ones are the Berry Punch which is strawberry, raspberry and blueberry and the Raspberry Collider which is raspberry, orange juice and banana.

I think you could get some really good ideas from looking at the online menu, http://www.smoothieking.com/smoothies/smoothie-detail.php?id=79

We don't use watermelon, but I would assume that it wouldn't do much for a smoothie mixed with other fruits.

I would also highly suggest trying using things such as yogurt, frozen yogurt, vanilla ice cream, sorbets and peanut butter. All of these things give the smoothie a good base ingredient and a really nice creamy flavor and texture while still being a fruit smoothie... and all of those things are cheap.

Another suggestion... things like raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, pomegranates... etc. can't really be de-seeded and buying things like mangos all the time can get pretty expensive. A good alternative to these things is buying canned fruit or purees. At smoothie king we used fresh bananas and strawberries, canned peaches, pineapple, and cranberry and then everything else is a puree or juice. I would definitely suggest going with the same general idea. This opens the suggestion of using pomegranate, apple, blueberry, or orange juices in your smoothies :) yum.

Also consider tea if you like it... green tea, frozen yogurt, and strawberry is a really good mix.

We do it the way we do for a reason... to make smoothies cheap, easy, and fast for us to make!

Oh and we use honey... a lot of honey. It's a good alternative to sugar, but we use raw sugar or "turbinado" as well.

When making smoothies do you peal fruit first (i.e oranges) or...is it better not to?

This has a simple answer.....if you'd eat the peel when the fruit is whole, put it in the blender with the peel.

Example: You don't eat the peel of an orange, so you wouldn't put it in your blender with the peel.
You WOULD eat the peel of an apple, so you could leave it on.
PS. Apple skin is healthier than the actual apple so if you want to be extra healthy you could put in extra apple peels(they actually taste pretty good!)

Is real fruit smoothie healthy?

Yes, fruit is healthy, whether it's in a smoothie or not, eaten in the morning or not.... Just make sure you don't put sugar in it. Sweeten your smoothies with raw honey, agave nectar, stevia, or if you have a strong blender like a vitamix, you can use dried medjool dates (the fruit) to sweeten it up.
PS: you might also want to make green smoothies (recipes on youtube) VERY healthy as well :)

Are my green smoothies making me sick?

If you weren't eating a huge amount of fresh fruits and veggies before starting the green drinks, your digestive tract is probably going through an "adjustment" period, which is temporary, although annoying and uncomfortable. Not to be gross, but the pain is caused by gas, and the green stools is caused by the digestive tract moving the greens though too fast (not fully digesting them). Juicing or making smoothies out of greens pack in way more produce than you would normally eat in a single meal (when was the last time you ate several pounds of produce in one setting?). This can upset a digestive tract not used to those levels of fiber and nutrients all at once. Once your digestive tract re-regulates, you will start feeling the benefits (give it about a week or so), and the unpleasant side effects will go away.

I have Crohns disease, and after a particularly nasty flare up, the naturopath wasn't happy that the levels of multiple vitamins on my blood test weren't going up (because of the disease, I have problems absorbing nutrients). He recommended I switch from my regular, pill form multivitamin to a liquid multivitamin and that I start taking powdered greens (similar to what your doing with the green smoothies, but with less fiber). The first few times I took the new mix, I immediately threw it all back up. And for about 2 weeks after I was able to keep it down, it caused the exact same problems your describing. According to my doctor, that was a result of my digestive tract trying to regulate itself to higher levels of fiber and nutrients, and that I should keep taking it, since the symptoms were temporary. Sure enough, the symptoms did go away after about 2 weeks (my digestive tract is more sensitive than most people, so it probably won't take that long in a healthy person). I never went back to pill vitamins, and have continued taking the green drink (for about 3 years now), and have had no further issues beyond that initial reaction.

Does banana, kiwi, and apple go together for a smoothie?

they do. I have made one myself and they are very good.

Is it better to blend a smoothie than eat whole fruits and vegetables?

No, blending fruits and vegetables is not better than eating the whole food. The process of blending pre-digests the fruits and veggies , which means your body doesn’t have to work as hard to break them down. What does this mean to you? Most likely a spike in blood sugar because the fiber found in the whole food has been broken down into liquid. Fiber is very important in slowing down the digestion of food and regulating blood sugar. But only when your body has to work at breaking it down.So most likely you’ll have a blood sugar spike which is not only unhealthy, but you could get hyper and jittery. And then comes the crash shortly after. This is when you suddenly feel tired and probably hungry. Hungry leads to snacking - this is your body’s attempt at keeping you away.If you have to snack more, you’re probably defeating the purpose of drinking the smoothie in the first place. Also, pre-digested blender food is not as good as whole food because your body doesn’t have a chance to extract the maximum amount of nutrients from the fruits and vegetables. Since the food passes through you faster, there’s less time for your body to absorb the nutrients.Don’t get me wrong - I love smoothies. Drinking them helped me lose weight and keep it off. I always recommend adding a high-quality protein powder and fiber supplement to smoothies. If you do that, you have a better shot at slowing down the digestion of your smoothie and getting the more nutritional benefit out of it.

Does banana and mango go well in a smoothie?

Yes, something bland and fibrous (such as a banana) will always complement something sweet and juicy (a mango) when mixed together in a smoothie.

Some other combo's to consider:

Banana & Strawberries
Banana & Kiwis
Banana & Raspberries

Try adding some ice cubes or vanilla ice cream to the mix and it will taste great!
