Which of these gaming computers is better for casual gaming?
Is the Alienware X51 optimal model ($1149 value) better than the Dell XPS 8300 (currently at sale for $849). Both have similar specs (posted below) and the XPS is $300 cheaper, but I'm not on a huge budget either. Note that I only game casually. Games that I play are Borderlands, Minecraft, Skyrim, and I was considering trying Diablo. I know these games' graphics don't compare to Battlefield 3, but would both of these computers be able to run these games on max settings, or even high? Are gaming PCs good for music production?
Absolutely! Everything that a great gaming PC consists of will be useful for a great Music production PC, except for the graphic card. Yup, you do not require a heavy duty graphic card for your music production, even if you make music for videos!A word of advice though, if you can afford go for an i7 rather than an i5! Unlike a gaming rig, which relies on the graphic card for all the juice, a music production relies on the cpu for all its juice! All the sample libraries, plugins and vst instruments rely on the cpu for smooth functioning! So get the best cpu you can afford. A gaming PC will make do with an i5 and an awesome Graphic Card, Music production will benefit more with an awesome CPU!Also make sure you have a separate hard drive(minimum 7200 rpm) for your OS, one for all your projects and one external drive for your sample libraries, loops, instruments, etc. It's not an absolute requirement, but having separate hard drives will definitely help in system performance. A slow hard drive will bogg down performance no matter how fast your processor is.Get 2 identical Ram sticks of your choice. The new Skylake processors support upto 2400 mhz of ram speed at stock speeds. So basically get the fastest ram that you can afford.Overclocking : A lot of Gaming rigs are overclocked! It's a privilege for PC owners. Get a k version of Intel processor, if you want to overclock. Though overclocking is not an absolute necessity, so it's all up to choice. Goodluck!
Good laptop specs?
If you plan on doing any gaming, it would be good if you bought a laptop with a video card that has it's own dedicated memory. Look for laptops with an ATI x1600 or Nvidia 7600 graphics chips.. If you are going to use Windows Vista, choose laptops with ATI x1800 or Nvidia 7800 graphics chips. I have a 7600 on two computers, and when I tried Vista, all the games I played on xp were unplayable on Vista (on a new stronger system with that same graphics card).. This might get better with time when graphics drivers get better or Vista gets better.. Also, don't go under 1GB of ram, and I'd say 2GB if you are planning to use Windows Vista. Also, with Vista, you need a lot more power in you computer, so go for Intel Core 2 Duo processors, or AMD Athlon 64 x2 processors. (dual core processors). If, your mainly going to use the laptop for work (papers, spreadsheets), don't concern yourself too much with graphics.. Buy a IBM (or Lenovo) laptop with a good processor, and enough RAM (as I said above) and enjoy a good software bundle and it's stability, good hardware quality and long battery life. In this case, you can probably forget about gaming (unless you buy an expensive model), but you'll enjoy a very high quality laptop with lots of speed for work, web browsing and multimedia..
